Wow...no coments? This is a relative list but not bad imo. My list would be games that just floored me and burrowed into my brain. Its a toss up between the 1st zelda and ocarina of time. Bioshock for sure. Mass effect 1 or 2. FF7. Mario 64. Fallout 3 and possibly skyrim. I missed alot of the ps2 era so its a little biased. Uncharted 2 was pretty unbelivable too.

InactiveUser4363d ago

I saw it when it was pending approval, but didn't comment because these lists are too subjective. Nobody's played every single game, people prefer different genres than others, etc. So it's really impossible to make a definitive list.

There are also plenty of ways you could define greatest. Greatest for their time? Sure, then Pacman or Asteroids could be on people's lists, but are they really that good by today's standards? As good as Super Mario 64 may have been, who's really going back to play that with any regularity? My guess is not many.

As far as their list goes, I'd probably only agree with BioShock.

8th – MASS EFFECT 2 - I own it, but haven't played it yet. Mass Effect 3's demo has prevented me from putting in the ME2 disk. ME3's demo made me feel like Mass Effect is highly overrated. I'll eventually play it, but for now, I can't say how great or not great it is.

7th – MOTHER 3 - Looks horrible via YouTube. I have zero interest in this game.

6th – XENOGEARS - Again, pretty horrible in my opinion.

5th – SUPER MARIO 64 - Seems deserving of a spot.

4th – BIOSHOCK - Agreed. Loved the atmosphere.

3rd – THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME - Maybe good for its time, but seems overrated IMO.

2nd – SUPER METROID - Again, seems good for its time, but not all that great.

1st – CHRONO TRIGGER - Another RPG game listed.. Article maker obviously liked RPGs and Nintendo games. I personally have zero interest in the game.

"7th – MOTHER 3 - Looks horrible via YouTube. I have zero interest in this game.

6th – XENOGEARS - Again, pretty horrible in my opinion. "
Oh I haven't played these games but I think it's fine for me to say they're horrible because I watched a couple minutes of gameplay on youtube.

InactiveUser4363d ago

If I had to make a top 8, without thinking too much, I'd probably go with ones that are more modern in playability and are great overall experiences IMO.

BioShock
Half-Life 2
Grand Theft Auto (pick your favorite)
Metal Gear Solid (1, or pick your favorite)
Portal 2 (or the original)
Resistance: Fall of Man (personally loved the story & gameplay)
Shadow of the Colossus
Uncharted 2 (or pick another from the franchise)

But like above and what kent said below, there's too many and it's too subjective to personal preferences and how you define best/greatest.

If you're considering of their time, you'd also have to look at old games like:
Pong, Super Mario Bros (or 3), Asteriods, Space Invaders, Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Tetris, etc.

"Oh I haven't played these games but I think it's fine for me to say they're horrible because I watched a couple minutes of gameplay on youtube."

If you read my first sentence, you'd see your post is useless and pointless. I said these lists are subjective. I have ZERO interest in those games I said I had no interest in, because I don't like that genre.

Yes, IMO, they look horrible as in they are very much dated and boring (IMO) turn-based battle RPGs. I also think text dialog in games is usually more of an annoyance than anything, I prefer actual speech or low amounts of text dialog, as you see I have SotC listed with its translated text and MGS with its optional text while there's actual speech.

Subjective. I disagree with most of the list. End of argument.

Also, what's wrong with watching the gameplay on youtube to see that its gameplay is something I'd have no interest in and wouldn't include on a greatest games of all time list? Do you buy every game that releases, since you apparently can't tell through videos what games you may or may not like?

"You need to physically play a game from start to finish to see what it's gameplay is like." is a poor argument. If you've played a lot of games and your eyes are in working order, it doesn't take long to make a pretty good judgment on if you'd like a game or not. Perfect example being with what I said about ME2. I haven't played it yet and am put of a bit by the ME3 demo, but I still bought and own it, because I think it will at the very least be playable, if not great as others say.

And with that, my 3 bubs are up.

EeJLP is just a kid guys. it's not his fault he has a **** taste in gaming

JRPGlover4363d ago

You guys are crazy if you think this is the height of gaming at any point in time, let alone from a 2006 game.

Hicken4363d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

It's not even subjective when you say a game "looks horrible" so you're not interested. You said yourself you know almost nothing about these games. And the fact that you're basing your impression on how games from ten+ years ago "look" on youtube is pretty sad.

"Best" isn't completely subjective, either. Quality can be measured in various categories: graphics(for a game's time, anyway), music, story delivery. Gameplay, character development, amount of content, replay factor. These things can all be looked at objectively, and can be used to determine what the "best" games are.

I don't wanna say your list sucks, but... it sucks. It's too heavy on current-gen games. Hell, only two of them are from before this gen. That kinda speaks to your experience in gaming. And that you have "zero interest" in many games that are considered to be among the best is pretty damning, all by itself.

Yours is an opinion I think very few people would actually ask, when it came to games.

Just saying.

Edit: Quality is not subjective. It just isn't. And Mother 3 aside, what's the purpose of saying Xenogears "looks" bad? It's 15 years old, and widely regarded as a superb game. But it "looks" bad, so he's not interested. Sorry, but that's just stupid. You can't judge a game by its looks. Ever. I don't care when it was made. Play the damn thing.

JRPGlover4363d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

Mother 3 is from 2006, but looks and plays like a 20 year old game, Hicken. It broke no new grounds and shouldn't be considered in a top 200, let alone top 8.

Pretty sure he doesn't mean "looks" as in visually if he mentioned Pong, Tetris, and Pacman. It looks like he meant 'looks horrible' as in it looks like a horrible game to play by today's standards or at least to include in a greatest games of all time list.

Why would you think he's talking about horrible visuals if he mentioned even older games like Space invaders and Asteroids or whatever else he said?

Also, most of what you listed IS subjective. Story, music, replay value, etc. Amount of content may be the only objective, quantifiable category you mentioned.

MysticStrummer4363d ago

Wow so many stupid replies to EeJLP... (A) You can get enough info about a game from a Youtube video to know whether you are interested in it or not, (B) Not agreeing with you doesn't make someone automatically a kid, and (C) Everything Hicken listed is subjective, including the amount of content because no one but the individual gamer knows if a game was too long or too short for their taste.

My Top 8 single player console games list (in no particular order, and not including my fave online games):

Breath of Fire 3 (favorite Jrpg, story)

Metal gear Solid Peace Walker (best action, story)

Advance Wars 2 (best strategy)

StarFox 64 (awesome game, story)

Zelda Ocarina of Time (Probably the best)

Skyrim (if it could get a handle on all the bugs)

Castlevania Symphony of the Night (just wow!)

Super Smash Bros Wii (for best fighting game)

kent800820074363d ago

Hundreds of games are on par with those 8, if you want to make a list of greatest games of ALL TIME, make it the top 250 or so

M_Prime4362d ago

agreed...

and it would be nice if the criteria was listed..

EX "best shooter from 1990 - 2012).. there was a article a few months back that had several categories and it picked really good games, but also had honourable mentions at the bottom because some games were really close...

MeatAbstract4363d ago

And this is where I once again drop to my knees, rip and claw at my shirt and cry out in despair:

"I ADMIT IT, I'VE NEVER PLAYED CHRONO TRIGGER!"

PhantomTommy4363d ago

Then what the hell are you doing on here? Go and get your adventure on!

MeatAbstract4363d ago

I don't have a copy to play.

Hold on, it's on the DS. I have a DS.

That means I can...uh...that means...I can...urrmmmm...

MWH4363d ago

Chrono Trigger's snap shot (one of the most beautiful moments in the game) is missing Magus.. looks like some of us couldn't forgive ;-)

but those who did, they know that Magus was a significant ally to have.

humbleopinion4363d ago

From purely beneficial reasons I have no idea why someone would choose not to have Magus in the team. Exp points for the battle perhaps? It seems negligible considering the alternative

MWH4363d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

i know a friend who took this choice on a personal level avenging Glenn and Cyrus while i chose differently.. we debated these moral choices for days, what a game it was back then :-)

lol @ disagree.

WonderboyIII4361d ago

Frog or Magus. I choose Frog. He deserves to become a human again after all that loyalty.

MWH4361d ago (Edited 4361d ago )

hello Brother,

i can understand this choice and i agree what Magus did was wrong but killing him at that point of the game didn't feel right either, at least to me. i believe if vengeance was completely justified they wouldn't have made it a choice of question but they would've encouraged you to it instead.

the moment was depicted perfectly, the silence during the choice, the sound of wind blowing on the top of that cliff, it was to make you think rather than to make you act.

Magus was no Sephiroth, and the story elements that unfolded later left no doubts to my choice.

i was happy to have spared Magus, not only the story changed but he was one hell of a party member too.. who knows, in the end maybe Magus did lift the curse after all the hardships they went through together :-)

what an epic game it was, we were lucky to have experienced it :-)

*my last bubble*

grailly4363d ago

Mass Effect 2 is such a weird game for me, I have an enormous list of issues with, and I feel like most of them were addressed in mass effect 3, still somehow I enjoyed mass effect 2 way more than 3.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave11d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan11d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
