you see, now this is why PS3 owners have always complained about VGChartz. notice that once again the PS3 has outsold the 360 but miraculously the gap has now increased from just below 2 million to 2.4 million (they suddenly found 600,000 units from somewhere even though by their own numbers they have the PS3 outselling the 360 this week) that's about a months worth of sales. where did they come from?

i've tolerated this for over three years now and they do this around twice a year, BUT like i said, i've always used their numbers because they're all we have. i just wanted to explain to those that keep calling Sony fans hypocritical that this is the reason. if it happened the other way around occasionally then i wouldn't be so suspicious.

Tommy3344364d ago

Real Gamers know the PS3 is ahead of the 360.

GribbleGrunger4364d ago (Edited 4364d ago )

we can't know for certain whether the PS3 is ahead of the 360, but it definitely makes you consider that as a possibility. either way it doesn't really matter. the only reason i'm pointing that out is so that maybe the sensible people on this site can understand why Sony fans used to get fed up with VGChartz. it's sobering to realise that even though VGChartz do this regularly they still can't sustain it and that gap shrinks over the 'whole' year regardless

you will also notice that another Sony product (the Vita) has been dropped in sales. interesting when you consider that none of the other consoles have. this of course could be a huge coincidence... we will never know.

edit: too those people who disagreed with my first post: didn't you see that last week the gap was around 2 million and now it's 2.4 million? and can't you see that once again VGChartz has the PS3 outselling the 360? just do that maths and you'd have to agree it's very odd

NukaCola4364d ago

I know it's probably impossible, but I want to know the actually numbers of people who own 360s or PS3s. There aren't 50million people out there who own one. You can tell that by the software being 100K-5mil average. Even using the LIVE and PSN accounts aren't really accurate.

People own and have purchased multiples of those systems and I am just curious to see what the actually ownership rates are.

Moentjers4363d ago

@NukaCola
Lot's of rrod's and less ylod's were solved by getting a 2nd, 3rd, 4th... console. I'm still on my 1st fat 60 ps3 so don't subtract one for me.

TheRealHeisenberg4363d ago

^^^I'm still on my original 360. My original fat PS3 died on me after warranty so I bought another one. Bought a PS3 Slim about a year ago so now I have two PS3s. I guess that has to be counted. I know several people that have had to replace their 360s and their PS3s. This could be difficult to figure out.

Anyway though, I thought PS3 fans were supposed to be more concerned with the games (exclusives) than they apparently are with sales? I have seen it posted here so many times.

No matter how anybody wants to twist it, sales and games do matter.

Aloren4363d ago

Real Gamers don't care and probably own both.

cas854363d ago

In terms of sales? No it's a tie pretty much, don't be delusional. A few million unit difference is negligible and will be more so in the future when the total sales are approaching 70mil total units. When one platform will gain a 25% ahead lead then it will be winner.

mcstorm4363d ago

Nukacola at the momet i have 2 360's and 2 ps3's and a wii but ive has 2 original 360s one rrod on me and i traded the other one in for my s and i had a fat ps3 that yold on me and bought 2 slims.
I know 4 people who only have a 360 but dont know anyone with just a ps3 they tend to own both. But everyone seems to have a wii.

But you are right about most people not owning 1 console sine the snes days ive owned 2 or 3 consoles of each gen as for me the best way to experience the full power of gaming and have no - points is to own them all. Just like i have a psv and 3ds now too.

Spydiggity4363d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

you people (95% of you) are the reason gaming isn't taken seriously in the mainstream. so immature.

how can you care/brag about numbers when you had NOTHING to do with the development of the system, the establishment of the company, or the profits?

If you compare the numbers that were posted on N4G for their weekly basis and the compare what they have on their site now, you'll see that there are huge differences in numbers.

views global
http://n4g.com/news/987546/...
http://www.vgchartz.com/wee...

Their numbers for nearly every console are just a mess. Look at the wii how it gained so much and how How PS3 lost 2K with 360 gaining just a few 100's.

http://www.vgchartz.com/wee...
http://n4g.com/news/983082/...

Here we have nearly all console dropping couple 100's to 1000, with the wii number increasing by nearly 10K

My point is, VGchart numbers are rumored and overall their system sucks. Where are they getting their numbers from? Such drastic changes in some of these it just doesn't make sense to ME TBH I can understand if there is an increase in sales, that means that more reported numbers are coming in. However, what I don't understand is how some of their numbers can suddenly decrease by such a large margin.

to seem fair:
http://n4g.com/news/979612/...
http://www.vgchartz.com/wee...
Initial numbers posted on PS3 compared to VG, 6K more appeared on VG later.
but the PS Vita is at 72 on N4g, but now showing on VG as 66K. 4 K difference is pretty big if you ask me.
I'm more worried about the numbers that are decreasing rather then the ones increasing.

and as said, where are these numbers coming from?

Nitrowolf24364d ago (Edited 4364d ago )

And as you can see they are still updating the numbers. TBH I think these post should wait a few more days after they have posted these sales, or better yet VGchart shouldn't be posting these sales until they have the final counts.

Number on N4G as of 10PM CPT;

Nitrowolf24364d ago (Edited 4364d ago )

slight correction, wii difference is suppose to be decrease not increase
*Facepalm*
there goes an hour wasted trying to figure out why column 1 didn't equal column 2 lol

Either way, why does VGchart post incomplete numbers to begin with?
and which ones are correct VGChart?
These ones that show on the main site (the N4G numbers) http://www.vgchartz.com/#US...

or the the ones that show when you click global?
http://www.vgchartz.com/cha...

Their software sales seem unaffected by changes

ronin4life4363d ago

@nitro
Where is the 3ds WW total? o.o;

Nitrowolf24363d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

@ronin4life

I kind of cut them off by accident last night and couldn't edit when I realized it. plus wanted to sleep.

3DS world Wide sales: 16,698,514

Nonetheless, as mentioned my concern here is where are these numbers generating from. Last post showed that VG publishes two different sets of numbers. The question is why and how come they just don't wait until the final sales are made before posting? These numbers were published the same day I believe.

ACEMANWISE4363d ago

Is the person who submits these to N4G posting numbers from an article on vgchartz or is he/she posting from a statistics page?

another week and the vita yet outsold by almost every gaming device!

what went wrong?

silvacrest4363d ago

as gamers we all celebrated the price of the vita but the casuals probably see it as to expensive in comparison to a 3DS and the sad truth is casuals out number us

also, the games...we need more games

MySwordIsHeavenly4363d ago

People begged for great games and a good price point.

Sony gave it to them.

Nobody bought it. -_-

From a business standpoint, it would serve Sony best to pander to the casuals, instead of hardcore gamers. Perhaps they will do that next time.

I'd like to thank everyone who whined about handheld gaming not being hardcore enough, who didn't buy a Vita. Screw you people.

NintendoNerd904363d ago

its the overpriced memory cards thats hurting Sony. they got way too greedy. 100 dollars for 32GBs?? yeah, you wonder why your handheld is bombing.

portal_24363d ago

Yeah, nothing to do with the fact the PSP continues to outsell it.

how ps3 outselling xbox every week Worldwide
but they show the gap still increased to 2.4m ?! 0_0

whoyouwit044363d ago

man get real at the beginning of this year the gap was 3.1 mill and now the gap is 2.4 mill that is a decrease, besides its not like yhey were out selling them by 100s of 1000s, they were only doing 20 to 40 thousand so what do you expect.

pangitkqb4363d ago

I noticed the same. Thanks for pointing this out.

Bigpappy4363d ago

Your logic is flawed. PS3 guys always argue thathe site under-track PS3 numbers. If the lead increased from 2 to 2.4, that would indicate that it was the 360 being under-tracked, or the PS3 numbers were over estimated. In this case, the 360 fanboy should be crying foul, but they are not. You guy are also now deducing from this that the PS3 is now leading the 360. You guys us the same tactics as Fox news. You think if you put enough propaganda out there, people with just accept it. You need to show some real numbers if you really want to win over the masses. Atleast that is how it works in the US where most people aren't so easily swayed.

Outside_ofthe_Box4363d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

Your logic is just as flawed.

First off, people argue that PS3 is being under tracked based off the past.

Second, how does that AUTOMATICALLY mean that the 360 is being under-tracked?

There is actually no way to tell if it's an overestimation or an underestimation until... both Sony and Microsoft reveal the official numbers.

Worrying about vgchartz number is pointless. Just use it as an educated guess about the sales numbers until Sony and Microsoft reveal the real numbers. No need for anyone to cry foul on weekly basis. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo will eventually correct it.

Sales shouldn't be such a big deal to us anyway, but it hilarious to see people argue about it as if they have some sort of bet placed on who will out sell who every week.

mobhit4363d ago

I posted not to say the typical and stereotypical..
" Who the F*** cares" because i know i will get 10+ responses stating -- "why post then or click the topic? hypocrite much.."

I posted because lady and gents its late in the console life cycles... Hardware isn't much of a factor and the ones who care are in denial.

Right now its about software and everything with a Call of _ _ _ _ and dance titles is whooping everything else. Hence fanboyS should stop the stupid bickering and start flaming the popular fanbases, as RPG's, strategy, etc. are taking a nose dive on ALL consoles. Next console go around we might only have shooters AND motion dancing crap to select from. Sure Elder Scrolls did good, however one of my favorite genres might become extinct due to "not meeting sales expectations".

Next gen is going to be mostly shooters and dance like a fool games. We are all fu**ed. And even a RARE game outside of those two genres will be raped with DLC models i.e. paying 90+$ USD for the complete GAME.

Stand united or be prepare to be divided between hardcore and casual gamers. Even then the casual gamers won't read these posts...

the only consoles that are holding up well are ps3 and 3ds. the rest are just lagging. wii is understandable because nintendo have already announced their next console. 360 just relies solely on america and vita just doesnt have the content yet. check this

official sales from nintendo

Godchild10204364d ago

What I'm lost. What are you talking about? I'm saying the 3DS is number one, am I wrong? As for the home console the Ps3 is number one. Since the PS3 is not portable I classified as a home console and the 3DS is portable so it's classified as its own portable console. It's a consoles but not like the one you can only play at home.

andibandit4364d ago

apparently Sony fanboys cant even count to 5 without getting the numbers wrong

NintendoNerd904363d ago

Wii is still the king in sales. and it took Sony 6 years to barely catch up to a close second place spot.

Foliage4363d ago

Well NintendoNerd, the 360 happened to be released a year ahead of the PS3. It was even released a year and a half in many large territories before the PS3.

The fact alone that the PS3 had already surpassed the 360 almost a year ago should show you how pathetic the 360 has bombed. Especially when you take into account how the PS3 has not yet been dropped in price to the "sweet spot" that always boosts sales.

That was not a typo, the PS3 HAD passed the 360 worldwide a year back. VGChartz is incredibly off from the numbers. I work for a video game publisher. VGChartz is run by an angry 360 fanboy who got banned from the neogaf forums by getting caught attempting to pass fake sales numbers and created a website. There is absolutely no source behind his numbers, it's all created from thin air.

The 360 is on it's last legs. When the PS3 has that year-year and a half of sales to make this a fair comparison; it will be clear to even you. Let's not forget that the Sony brand has proven to have great longevity. Heck, the PS2 is STILL doing well. When all is said and done, the PS3 will be greatly ahead of the failbox.

4363d ago
MrBeatdown4363d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

@DK

"360 was even selling for a higher average price much of the year"

Lulz. This again?

Please, at least tell me you've found a better source than that eight month old GamaSutra article detailing only two months of concrete data that you've been falling back on for months now...

http://www.gamasutra.com/vi...

I sure hope you have. Seeing that the PS3 sold for an average of $32 higher than the 360 as of July 2011 doesn't exactly bode well for your claim that the 360 sold for higher for "much of the year".

And even then, you refuse to acknowledge that the average price of the 360 in September ($306) is clearly driven higher by bundles, seeing as how no standalone 360 sells for over $300, therefore making the data unreliable for a straight up console hardware vs console hardware comparison.

The real cherry on top is that you say the average price for both the PS3 and 360 is $249. In doing so, you exclude bundles, which quite ironically, reinforces my point about the GamaSutra numbers being inflated by bundled content, which for some reason, you've insisted on disputing for months. It's funny that you go back and forth on what is and isn't relevant.

And it's quite funny that you waste your time bringing up the PS2's head start, as if Foliage is deliberately ignoring it, as if it mattered. It should be obvious to anyone that the PS2 absolutely destroyed it's competition, and nothing would have dramatically altered the sales outcome. By 2005, the gap in sales between PS2 and Xbox was 70 million. At that rate, Sony could have stopped selling the PS2, and it would have taken Microsoft another decade at their average sales rate to match PS2 sales. The idea that you would try to compare that to this generation where the difference in sales between PS3 and 360 is merely a matter of months as opposed to YEARS is just a downright pathetic attempt at finding hypocrisy.

And it's quite laughable that you say the 360 hasn't reached it's "sweet spot" based on the existence of a higher end model. Microsoft has reached a certain price point and sold consoles to people who only want to spend $200 on a console. Sony has not. It doesn't get much simpler than that.

4362d ago
MrBeatdown4362d ago

@DK

I don't need to provide proof that your source is wrong. I'm not debating the source, because the source isn't taking data from two months and making sweeping statements about long term trends. You are. I'm pointing out the idiocy of taking two months of data and using that to prove something is true long term. Your wild speculation does not qualify as fact until proven wrong. The burden of proof falls on you, not me. And you simply don't have proof. Your source, and your claims are two entirely different things. You say I don't want to believe it, but the irony is that you are so desperate for it to be true that you're willing to overlook basic logic, and throw all reasonable skepticism out the window to make it true. I'm not sure whether you're trying to prove something to me, or prove it yourself.

It would be completely idiotic to assume a console's monthly sales lead stayed consistent based on a few months of data from 2011, so why does it make sense to do so for the average selling price? It doesn't, but clearly that doesn't matter to you.

And I never said or implied bundles weren't factored in on the PS3 side. But during the September month in which that data was collected, the Gears of War 3 $400 bundle was released, skewing the data in the 360's favor. And Kinect has sold better than Move, so it's not much of a stretch to assume that Kinect bundles sell better than Move bundles as well.

As if your wild speculation didn't have enough holes in it, you have absolutely no explanation for the 360's $26 price increase between July and September. You can't even explain data present in the article, so how can you possibly make assumptions about long term trends based on that data?

The fact of the matter is quite simple... that data covers consoles AND console bundles, which vary between Sony and Microsoft. And it only covers three months, one of which isn't even fully detailed. To use those numbers in an apples to apples comparison between the two consoles, when the items being sold actually differ significantly, and aren't even limited exclusively to consoles, doesn't make for a true, accurate comparison. When the average price varies by $26 for no clear reason in just a three month span, it is clearly beyond stupid to make any claims of consistency for eight months. Anyone with a little common sense can see that.

And finally, like I said, adding up the cost of all SKUs and dividing doesn't mean squat. It's not the average selling price. It's the average MSRP, which has no relevance to consumer spending. And hell, you didn't even do that right. You left out the $300 320GB Uncharted PS3, the $450 Kinect Star Wars bundle, and all the other left over holiday bundles which are still easy enough to find. Hell, I just checked BestBuy.com. The sixteen closest stores still have the Gears 3 bundle in stock.

What the hell does that have to do with the video game industry?

Droid Control4364d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

I think M$ may well end up in third place by the time this generation is over. I think they'll tap out at about 70 Million units. A success by any standards - but still third place.

2.4 million separates the 360 from the PS3. The gap is shrinking...

Slapshot824363d ago

I'm probably going to get a few Disagree's over this statement, but if the new $99 Xbox 360 'entertainment bundle' is true, it's almost looking like Microsoft could pull out of the gaming industry. They've let nearly all of their first party developer's go, and system exclusive's are dwindling lower and lower for them.

I honestly don't understand it. The Xbox 360 was the staple-child for Western Gaming, and now it feels more like a casual entertainment device with centralized Kinect focus. I miss having Bizarre Creations, Bungie and the likes around! :(

MySwordIsHeavenly4363d ago

The Xbox division is too profitable for them. There is no way they're pulling out of gaming.

ZeroWil4363d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

So despite the fact that most multiplatform games sell a lot more on the Xbox (thus making it certain that XBL subscriptions are purchased), and the few exclusives that do come out usually hit 4 million very quickly, Microsoft will still end up pulling out? <_<

whoyouwit044363d ago

Man is you crazy? You ae talking about they let their studios close when hat was 4 or 5 years ago, apperently you have not been doing your home work cauye if u did then You will know that in the last 4 years they have formed or purchased at least 10 new studios. That's called restructuring. And you are talking about they are kinect focus, have You been to the future? So you haven't seen their e3 press confrence. As for their kinect focus, ms vancouver, 343, turn 10, lion head and ms core publishing team will like to say hello. And one last thing you say hey are about to drop out of gaming I guess you never heard of studio leap or platforrm next studio both confirmed to be working on next gen titles.

This is completly off topic but remember sony fans actually thogh sony was about to acuire rockstar, if tthey beleived that then they will believe. That the gap is actuall smaller then 2.4 mill, I personally think it is much wider more like 3.4 mill.
