What do people think the Crusades and the Inquisition were? Tea parties?

1. Violent
2. Problematic

Religion Doesn't Kill People, People Kill People

Tachyon_Nova4438d ago

@newmonday

I'm reminded by your comment of a quote which goes along the lines of:

"With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil — that takes religion."

Religion isn't neceassary for murder to take place, but in many cases it allows it to happen by being means of justification for such appalling acts in the eyes of believers

Hospitaller from The Kingdom of Heaven ~

“I put no stock in religion. By the word religion, I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the "Will of God". I have seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves. And goodness. What God desires is here
[points to head]
and here
[points to heart]
and what you decide to do every day, you will be a good man - or not.”

This is a trend that I've noticed as well, and as a Catholic gamer I've always found it a little uncomfortable. Certainly people are allowed and should explore the unsavory side of religion, but it would be nice to just once see someone in gaming use their faith as means for positive action.

trenso14438d ago

Well there is always a bad side to anything religion isn't above that. If they only showed the good and none of the bad I don't see how that can be any better, I'd rather see the bad as its more interesting story wise for a game.

Lord_Sloth4438d ago

He's not saying ALL the time, just have a hero doing the right thing and not always have the religious guy be crazed or evil.

Shackdaddy8364438d ago (Edited 4438d ago )

Ya. I'm Catholic too and it does get uncomfortable from time to time.

I always think that it's more about corruption rather than religion though. Like there were extremely corrupt Popes throughout history. I've accepted that. But it's like in AC EVERY person linked to the church is trying to kill a mass amount of people and doing other horrible things. There are still a lot of good people out there...

It would be nice to see a nice religious character though. Like, I've only played two of the AC games so IDK if this has been done or not, but it would be nice to see a person in the Church who wasn't super evil and gave you tips on people.

I guess the monks you hide in are good guys...

IRetrouk4438d ago

you know that the church used to kill people simply for not agreeing with there views, also suppressing info and generally being very naughty, yes there are good people out there, but they aint all religous.

TheGOODKyle4438d ago (Edited 4438d ago )

Welcome to history...fact! Now put aside the bashing...there are good games out there that depict religion in a good light. Castlevania Lords of Shadow is one I can name immediately off the top of my head. So it's not only bad religion no matter how much more of it there is.

But if you don't want things to inspire people to create things off of...maybe religious institutions shouldn't play apart of some of the most gruesome things in history. I'm not blaming the religion, but the people who abused it.

roblef4438d ago

I think video games skew to violence in general. I don't see how games that deal with religious settings should be any different.

SybaRat4438d ago

Thinkin' real life depicts religion as violent and problematic.

If this is true, I hope it leads to Morrowind getting remade next.

-Foxtrot4d ago

I thought they’d go for Morrowind first to be honest but this is a welcoming surprise to tide us over before ES6

TheColbertinator4d ago

Well said. Exactly my thoughts too.

Tedakin4d ago

Unreal Engine isn't efficient for open world games, so I question the reliability of this story.

isarai4d ago

Yeah, 1st thing that came to my mind too, although i CAN see it being likely for ease if use, but it's not going to run very well if so

Tacoboto4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I'd wonder if it would just be exploiting Unreal for graphics but the underlying engine/logic is still the original framework.

Like how we had the graphical remakes of Halo Anniversary, Tomb Raider I-III, and Demon's Souls.

Could also end up a disaster like the GTA Trilogy

mkis0074d ago

I have heard that too but even if it's modified isnt arkham knight UE?

Fragslayer3d ago

"remake will run both an Unreal Engine 5 project and the old Oblivion project. For instance, new graphics are rendered in the Unreal Engine 5 project, but most of the gameplay and physics are still done on the original Oblivion engine"

So with this logic it'll run just fine using UE5 tool sets on top of Gamebryo's engine or maybe even Creation Engine, who knows.

Hopefully modders can fix the aged combart in this game if this is true. Enemies leveling up with you broke and defeated the whole purpose of leveling up.

Fragslayer3d ago

Yeah it could use some tuning for sure hence the need for a Remake not a Remaster. I'm surprised it's even a conversation within them group which makes me skeptical it's Oblivion. I wouldn't say they shouldn't level up at all though maybe just a leave them a couple levels behind to appease the masses.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave19d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan19d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
