The Strangest PS3 Play Style on Earth

Kotaku - Yesterday, Kotaku posted this still image of an inventive way to hold the PS3 controller and play mecha game Armored Core.

I'd never seen anything like it. It was assumed that this was a gag. That's exactly what Japanese forum users said when the photo first surfaced: is this a joke?

I used to play the original NES like that kinda... fingers over the top and controller backward. I was faster with my fingers than with my thumbs. I don't think I could do it with a modern controller though... too many buttons.

I found the clicking sound of the buttons to be pretty relaxing. I ended up zoning off and only listening to the buttons. Damn you buttons!

I just picked up a DS3 and held it this way and it really could work well once you get used to it. Rather than having 2 fingers per hand you can make use of 3 fingers per hand. You can use the buttons and dpad without taking any fingers off the sticks.

Even without trying I can imagine it's hard to access both triggers effectively without hitting the other one this way.

Also, must be very difficult to properly move the sticks.

But hey, I haven't tried it. Tell me I'm wrong. I always thought controllers could have more buttons on the underside, but this is doing it wrong!

I won't be trying it either, the learning curve is going to be too steep and it probably wouldn't help for most games even if I did manage to relearn to use the controller this way.

Honestly, I am not at all surprised it was for armored core. I always feel I need 2 more fingers per hand when I play that game. Have to press so many buttons at once.

Doesn't seem that hard. All you have to do is memorize the buttons and realize that you're holding the controller backwards so everything is reversed in a way.

I know a guy who uses his pinky for the shoulder buttons, his thumb for the analogue sticks and the remaining 3 fingers for x, o , square and triangle and the d-pad. Could not believe it. It looked so uncomfortable.

Every thought 99% of us are holding the controller wrong all these time? I always thought having to move my right thumb to press the other 4 face buttons is illogical. Some games have quicktime multi-pressing buttons such as Square+Triangle or X+O or Square+O. Hold the controller backwards and it's easy to do it.

Maybe PS3 controller designers also designed L2 and R2 in mind for holding the controller backwards.

Only X360 controller is design for forward holding because of left analog stick location and LT and RT.

Now think of why most of us type using QWERTY layout on the keyboard. We already know the reason keys are layout as QWERTY but still we insisted to use the poor layout just because most of us were learned the poor keyboard layout and now it's difficult to change.

My handicapped godbrother plays invetered because he can't move his fingers to reach the triggers so this isn't impressive at all. (And yea he is pretty damn good at games for a man in a wheelchair)

Back in the day of the NES I had a family friend that was 2 years younger than me that played with the controller facing him, but upside down(the cord was at the bottom), so all the directions where reversed. He played all games like this and I remember him played Mario 3 and absolutely killing it...that must've not been good in some developmental way.
