Microsoft EMEA veep Chris Lewis says the company is already working on its next next-generation console because "we have to".
Preliminary work is already under way, he told UK games site Kikizo.
"You can't sit back on your laurels in this business - the consumer won't let you, the developers certainly won't let us. So that's happening right now," he said.
The research and development practices of the console division are "no different than any other part of Microsoft" though, he insisted.
The news that Microsoft is already working on an Xbox 360 successor won't come as much surprise, mind - having been last to market with its first Xbox, the company was first to market in the next generation.

Hey gang, It’s been a whirlwind few months here at the Larian castle, attending some of the biggest awards ceremonies in our industry, and we are absolutely humbled by the recognition we’ve received from our players and our peers.
Publisher One or EIGHT and developer Team EARTH WARS will release physical standard and Deluxe editions of LOST EPIC for PlayStation 5 and Switch on August 8 in Japan, the companies announced.
Golf With Your Friends gets better again, with the introduction of a Critical Hit DLC pack and the launch of Speed Golf.
Planning ahead is normal business practice. Hope they dont drop the 360 out like the original xbox (bad move). Maybe this is why we didn't ever here any 5+ year plan for the 360 like we did the other next gen console
Fool me once, as they say
and you can guarantee sony even if they're sticking to their ten year plan are cooking up somethin
I bet you that the next xbox will come with blue ray disc drive.
The 360 has only been out about 2 years now, and they're already anouncing the new one, not very good business IMO. I think it would be better to work on it but not announce anything especially with the way they dropped support for the original xbox, it may put some people off buying one for fear of having to buy a newer console in a year or two's time, especially if like i said above they repeat their original xbox mistake (that p*ssed a lot of people off, the way they instantly dropped support)
If the announcement is at 2008's E3 then 2010 or 2011 for Xbox 3? Maybe 2012?
The sad thing is that it seems Microsoft wants to turn consoles into a Pc-like market as well(upgrade every year, standards to meet) when the point of consoles is to be unlike Pc's and have a basis of power for years.
