PlayStation, Xbox, Wii U - Which Will Survive?

There's a growing sentiment that Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony may not stay in the console business much longer. Which company will be the next to go?

where this rumour of a console maker dropping out came from, someone obviously sees them as a threat and wants them out. Maybe apple are going to release a console and want the competition gone.

There was a rumor recently about one of the console makers joining a cloud gaming type service. Thus not making a new console. We know Wii U is coming out this year. So out of sony and Microsoft who could it be? Me personally I just think ony and microsoft saw you don't have to have the best tech to be successful. I'm looking forward to next Gen.... Its going to surprise a lot of gamers in what they see.

I believe that's the only thing that could really move the gaming industry a bit. Apple is a well known company world-wide and would definitely attract the casuals if done right (ex, iPad/iPhone/Mac connect ability, etc).

I could actually see how they'd do it, too.
- Connect iTunes/Game Center Account
- Plays all games bought on iPad/iPhone
- Most likely use Cloud Gaming so the box itself isn't expensive (OnLive-style).
- Tons of third-party support from well known Dev's
- Use iPod/iPhone/iPad as a touchscreen gaming controller (Wii-U style) or alt-display (which would be huge since almost everyone has an iPhone/iPod nowadays).

Just a few ideas that could actually be possible.

Only problem is I could see a massive amount of "Angry Birds"-style games dominating the market if this were to happen. Sure, it'd bring game prices down, but you'd also be getting what you're paying for.

Nintendo have been around for over 20 years. PlayStation have been around for over 15 years. Xbox has been around for over 10 years.

For as long as the sales numbers reek in the profits, they will not stop.

They will all survive. All the big 3 aren't going out of business any time soon. The reason the Dreamcast failed was because SEGA didn't have the money to support a failing console. We've seen Nintendo fail with a console before with the Gamecube. But look, they're still in business! Sony and Microsoft are gigantic corporations that will keep making consoles as long as there is a demand for it.

All three of them have a place in the market, and they are all needed in the market in order to keep the ball rolling. As much as I'm not a fan of Microsoft, I do believe they need to keep Sony on their toes, and the same can be said to Microsoft from Sony.

I don't believe we would have gotten all our amazing games across all the consoles if it wasn't for the pressure put on by the others.

There are actually tons of reasons and examples that can be used to prove it, but I'd like to keep this short. If you look just a little at the situation, you'll see it.

They will all survive, to me the most that matters is PlayStation. I will be buying the PlayStation 4 because I love the games and variety the PS systems have to offer.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if EA decided to make a home console with Origin. They're a huge company with enough exclusives, especially sports games, to gain some market share. I wouldn't like it, but it seems likely. I'd rather Valve make a console than anyone else, imo.

If 3DS keeps selling poorly, & people are more astute to gimmicky crap than they were this gen with the Wii, then I would say Nintendo would be the most likely candidate to drop out.....they never sell consoles at a loss, & if a company wants to have remotely powerful console hardware in this day & age, they have to give more & charge less.....& that is not something Nintendo has ever been willing to do, nor ever will be in my opinion. Meanwhile, Sony, MS, both sell there new machines for high prices, but not that much higher than what Wii launched for, & Wii was a gen. old in tech in reality......and now we have Onlive rocking up & giving consoles away for nothing, or as a giveaway when you buy a certain game. Free fricken consoles now. What hope does a company that won't give anything away for nothing have to survive in this market.

And if it is Nintendo, then good riddence in my opinion....they should have gone instead of Sega, as at least Sega adopted new ideas like cd & tried to innovate with powerful machines. Nintendo consoles on the other hand have become overpriced, underpowered, gimmick riddled, kiddie machines in every sense. I mean, how much more awesome would it be to see Myamoto make a M rated game for Xbox 720 & PS4....

Well the 3DS is selling very well an Nintendo is beginning to make profit. You are one of the many people who confuse mature games with hardcore. Nintendo has always cater to dedicated gamers. Nintendo would never make games for other companies... They would suck. Ungrateful. Nintendo finally makes a system wih graphics than are at least better than PS3 (probably better considering those were unfinished dev kits), HD and Steam/Origin powered online. Nintendo finally gives Us what we asked for. Better graphics, good online and HD 1080p out of the box. All we do is whine about how mucho he 3DS didn't do well in the beginning...
Also MS would be most likely to drop out because they could just put Xbox Live on PC's and release PC MS games.

The mistake I made this gen is I bought all three consoles.

The wii does not have enough games for me to have kept it. Wii Sports was not enough to justify keeping it.

The 360 does not have that many great exclusives. Halo and Gears are great games for some, but if your not into those two games your left with just a dumbed down pc.

The PS3 has the best exclusives, shoddy third party games most of the time.

This gen has pushed me toward pc gaming more than consoles.

I'll probably go with the PS4 next gen only. I have a capable pc that will only need a video card upgrade for $150, maybe in about 1 to 2 years, then I can also overclock my x6 cpu and double my ram from 4 to 8 for only $30. So my third party games will be covered on the cheap on the pc, plus the pc versions of pc games are cheaper than console versions and most of the time support mods. Leaving me with just playstation exclusives. There also seems to be a new path for playstation for pc/playstation cross platform gaming.. that is a nice bonus.
