Thought it was from an American review there......phew

It's just Famitsu folks, apparently another japanese magazine Dengeki gave it a perfect score aswell.

I just don't understand how a game which has hardly improved on anything and has more of less the same crappy battle system, characters, story can get a higher mark then the first average game....although they both gave FF13 a high score when that came out

Optical_Matrix4510d ago

So you've played the full game through have you? No, didn't think so. Give it a rest. Yeah we know, you don't like Final Fantasy XIII-2. If it bothers you that much then why come into an article and cry about it for the 100th time.

Also what crappy battle system are we talking about here? It's the best in the franchise by far. Post game, in the insanely hard optional boss battles the game really shows you what the combat system was going for. It's tactical, fast paced and incredibly rewarding. Not condoning the fact that SE almost forced us to use Auto-Battle up until the end of the main quest but it was a good battle system once all that was out of the way.

Really don't understand all these people crying about FFXIII. They claim to hate it and dislike it, yet they're in every single Final Fantasy XIII-2 article handing out phantom disagree's and whining into thin air as if people are actually going to take their blind criticism fairly. If you don't like it, don't comment on the articles and don't buy it. Or as we like to say on GT Forums. Blog It.

Good day sir.

DeleteThisxx4510d ago

I love how he decided to dissect and reply to every sentence you wrote with the exception of the very first sentence XD

WhiteLightning, I'd love for you to elaborate on why you think the battle system in XIII so "bad." I've played and completed every FF in the main series and the system in place for XIII is BY FAR my favorite.

Oh, one last thing, while constructing your response, please remember one thing: Opinion's are subjective, don't generalize a whole group of people just because people these days love to show their detest for something more than their appreciation.

Example: Uncharted 2 is a fantastic game, many people loved it, yet you don't see articles talking about it anymore.

Final Fantasy XIII wasn't received well for many people and I'm still seeing people write articles and people complaining incessantly about the damn game because it didn't live up to their Final Fantasy expectations.

Skip_Bayless4510d ago

Just like we know the Sun is gonna come up tommorow, the game isn't a 10. It's impossible for it to get a 10.

ash_divine4510d ago

@White Lightning

What do you mean "hardly improved"?

You should probably watch this trailer : http://n4g.com/news/904099/...

We get it, you don't like the game. And you're not going to like the game no matter what.

But saying they "hardly improved" upon the original is just you lying to yourself.

@Skip_Bayless

What kind of effin kindergarten logic is that?

Firstly you haven't played the game. So how on Earth can you determine that.

And Secondly, NOTHING in life is 100% guaranteed.

Skip_Bayless4510d ago

Maybe your the person who has child-like logic. Has Square-Enix made a game in the high 9s? No System maxed out? Check

I don't need to go submerge myself under water to know that I will drown.

ash_divine4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

@Skip_Bayless

So you're saying if a person submerges themselves in water they will automatically drown? Every single time? You're saying that it's "impossible" for there to be a different outcome?

As for you're questions...

"Has Square-Enix made a game in the high 9s?"

If you're specifically referring to Square-"Enix", then Final Fantasy XII says hi.

If you mean overall then: Final Fantasy's XII, X, IX, VIII, VII and VI advance. (and they may have others outside of the FF series.) According to Metacritic.

I don't know why you're asking, Are you trying to imply that a company cannot ever make a 9+ game if they have not in the past? Even if that were true you'd still be wrong in this case.

"No System maxed out?"

I really don't know what the hell this is supposed to mean. Or why it even matters.

Not trying to be rude but, why waste the energy hatin' on a game you won't even play? Couldn't your time be better spent?

morganfell4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

@Skip Bayless,

Quick, you need to warn all of the people planning on pleasure diving, underwater research, snorkeling, and spearfishing that they are surely headed for their death.

See that? It's called misconception. It's what you have about FFXIII-2 because you do not fully comprehend the scope of what it is you are discussing. And you fail to see all the possibilities in a situation because you are taking only one route of possibility. Submergence does not always equal death and FFXIII-2 may actually be the gem it appears.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to warn General Dynamics and the US Navy they are sending young submariners to their death.

gaffyh4510d ago

It sounds a lot better than FF13 from the reviewers' comments. Especially regarding sidequests and conversation options.

Tanir4510d ago

again, white lightning is the biggest ff13 troll out there, and he says he is never the first to comment on a ff13-2 article, seriously this dude has an obsession with the game and will probably buy it day one.

he is alwaaaaaaays the first to comment on these articles yet he says anyone who likes the game is an idiot.

so he is either trolling the articles cuz he gets no attention in RL or otherwise

or he has a vast hope for american reviewers to give it a 10/10 so he can run and preorder it.

eitherway its bad

im pretty much inbetween, ff7,8 and 9 are to date my 3 fav games ever made, as much i was dissapointed over ff13 overall, it was still a fantastic game. its just the bar was set so high by the others. if ff13 wasnt called final fantasy there wud be no complaints

i cant wait for the sequal an deffo gettin it day one, i enjoyed the story and gameplayfrom 13 it just wasnt my fav in the series

bobrea4509d ago

People who don't like the game have just as much of a right to comment on it as people who do. that's like if CNN posted a story about democrats and you getting mad when a Republican chimes in with their displeasure.

Anyway, a lot of long-time FF fans didn't like FF13, and they're voicing their displeasure. And apparently FF13-2 hasn't changed what a lot of people hated the most, (the battle system,) so they aren't happy. Just ignore them if it bothers you that much, but don't bitch about them commenting on a site with a COMMENT SECTION right under the article.

Razmossis4509d ago

Final Fantasy XIII had the best story in any game or movie to come out in years. If all I had to do to see it through to the end was tap X a load of times... then so be it, I enjoyed every second (apart from that long part just before the end :P ).

"zomg gimm3 Versus XIII GOSH"

Yes, Versus XIII will restore Final Fantasy, even though Versus XIII couldn't be any further from a traditional Final Fantasy than you can imagine. With the except of a World Map, not much about Versus XIII is more Final Fantasy.

Oh yeah, Versus just screams classic Final Fantasy with it's Kingdom Hearts action battle system, Third Person Shooter Mechanics, Real World-like setting, etc.

Not that I'm not excited for Versus XIII, but JEsus Christ, stop bitching.

Troll-without-Bridge4509d ago

I think you have been living under a bridge these past few months, because the game improved plenty.

This child thinks americans is better at reviewing games than Japanese...I rest me case.

Ddouble4509d ago (Edited 4509d ago )

"Thought it was from an American review there......phew"

That just shows that you want the game to be bad yet you want Versus to be good even though both games are from the same company.

I understand being skeptical after XIII and with reviews from Famitsu but wanting the sequel to be bad is just pure hate.

frjoethesecond4509d ago

@whitelightning

Your comment reeks of xenophobia.

PshycoNinja4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

Oh Square! Why won't you tell us anything about Versus XII!!!

On Topic: "Fool me once shame on you; Fool me twice shame on me." This is how I feel about XIII and XIII-2. I am sorry to the people who actually liked XIII but I tried my hardest to like that game and enjoy it but it gave me no reason to. I played the whole game all the way through. Awesome CGI. Poor story, characters (except Sazh), and battle system. I will not be fooled into buying another game with the same world and characters. Which is why I am looking forward to Versus XIII: Story looks great, beautiful graphics, awesome battle system, great cast of characters and Nomura. I have never disliked a game that Nomura has directed so I highly doubt that I would dislike the game that he has put the last 5-6 years of his life into.

Edit: "One reviewer believes the game lives up to XIII" *facepalm*

Parapraxis4510d ago

Maybe they are handing Versus XII over to another team, Kojima style.

(I'm actually looking forward to MGR, but I had to say it)

Tenkay234510d ago

"Which is why I am looking forward to Versus XIII: Story looks great, beautiful graphics, awesome battle system, great cast of characters and Nomura."

You haven't played this game and yet you are making these assumptions it will be great? In case you were wondering, ever since ff13 was shown at e3 2006 ppl were expecting this game it be the new standard for ff games and rival ff7. People got disappointed. Versus may look good now, but until you play it you won't know. Maybe you will probably play it and hate it too and the cycle will continue.

Son_Lee4510d ago

I'll never understand the hate for FFXIII-2. First, people bashed FFXIII, then Square FIXED most of the problems with FFXIII-2 and people are STILL pissed? Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Oh well, I let them hate, cause come January 31, I'm going to be in gaming heaven while the haters continue to sip that haterade.

TheBlackMask4510d ago

"I'll never understand the hate for FFXIII-2"

You know I was half way through my comment then Whitelightnings reply to the above appeared. He explains it perfectly

Oh I will say this, you really think Square has fixed all the problems, HELLOOOO this is Square Enix were talking about, when do they listen, they just heard about the problems from the backlash of FF13 and decided that since this game is for a quick buck with the crappy start of FF14 had and the fact they had left over DLC they didn't want to waste, remember Square Enix hate wasting content, they decided to get as many people to buy the game as they can. These problems with FF13 that Square has "fixed" are just over exgaerations to get people to trust them again so suckers like you will buy the game again expecting to see all these problems dealt with in the sequel. The game was terrabile and wasn't anything like Final Fantasy, it didn't even deserve the title of such a great franchise.

It's like it's cool now to "love" the game and then hate on the so called "haters", like we havent got any reason to hate the game...were just hating it for the sake of it when thats BS because we have plenty of reasons and valid ones aswel.

Kenshin_BATT0USAI4510d ago

I do believe the main gripe people had with FF13 was that it was a linear game, they addressed that. A lot of people didn't like the battle system, they changed it up a bit too. Towns? They got that too. NPCS? Present.

Honestly this is coming down to people hating because it is a sequel of a game they didn't like. If you don't like it still boo-hoo it's not like they'll cancel it now.

PshycoNinja4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

1) I am standing my ground unlike most flip flop FFXIII haters turned defenders of the game and actually not going to get this game because I know exactly what Square is trying to do. As the person above me has stated so well.

2) If this is the same company that said "Everyone loved the battle system in XIII" and the classic "Everyone asked for a sequal"(bold face lie; no one asked for it) I doubt they actually listened to the criticism they got because if they did, we wouldn't see Hope back in the game!

3) Why do I care so much about this? One, I am invested in the Final Fantasy series and want to see it return to greatness and profitability. Two, I own a bit of stock in Square...

sirdrake4510d ago

you know what Square Enix is trying to do!!!??!? Do you work there!?

How do i get in!? i wanna know exactly what they are doing to!!!

dabri54510d ago

People in Japan really liked the game. They were asking for a sequel. Like most Japanese companies, they were addressing/ listening to the people that live in the country they are based in.

It's a new game. No one here has played it yet. Judge it for it's own merits. If you want to do a wait and see, do it. I've seen enough to peak my interest and I'll be buying it. There is literally no reason to hate on a game that hasn't come out yet. It's just a game. It didn't beat anyone up and take their lunch money. You either buy or you don't.

forevercloud30004510d ago

Call it a lucky guess but maybe its because....
1. Skeptical due to FFXIII failing to meet most epectations
2. You can only play with 2 characters period with stupid monsters to help in battle like its fucking pokemon or something.
3. Even more obnoxiously colorful than XIII which is saying something especially when the themes are supposed to be taken serious.
4. Pulled Time Travel out their ASS just to give this sequel purpose it seems. No hint of it anywhere in XIII and from rumors it sounds like some of XIII's story has been "revised" in order to fit this game in.
5. Still can only control one character at a time in battle. BIGGEST issue with the system
6. VO still hit or miss

bakasora4510d ago

If a few people hate FF13, the problem lies on that few people. If half of the people hate it, then there is something wrong with FF13.

its really hard for me to be open minded on this game. Having played the previous FF games.
I just couldn't take the "cheesyness" of the story. It's so CLICHE. an example? here " i gotta save my sister and save the world" wooo exciting (-,-) ALSO square enix made it even worse by giving out SPOILERS. and now instead giving us Versus this year we get a sequel THAT NOBODY ASKED FOR.

to the people that are new to FF or just ignorant
Square Enix is milking this FRANCHISE, so they can make more profit out of it.

PshycoNinja4510d ago

I agree with you 110%. Story and characters for XIII was so bland (for those that don't know, those are supposed to be the best things about a Final Fantasy game). And you hit the nail on the most important thing... NO ONE ASKED FOR A SEQUEL. Even people who are looking forward to XIII-2 didn't ask for a sequel. Where in the bowels of the internet did Square see someone ask for a sequel?

SuperLupe4510d ago

Yeah the linearity didnt bother me. Its the boringness (not sure that word exists) of the story and the cliche characters (come on even its the year 2010 and they are still capable of making cliché characters).
I play videogames for the story, thats why I dont play games like Skyrim and FF13's story was just retarted.

radphil4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

I find it funny how people say ALL characters are cliche, yet Sazh is about one, if not the most down to earth person out of the game, and connected to.

I mean he contemplated on suicide and grieved after he thought he lost his son, and then came to realization that he could save him after thinking about what happened with the others.

I remember when people complained about Final Fantasy Mystic Quest wasn't a "final fantasy" game way back, and today there's people that love the game.

Also, it's funny how people say that when the first game sucks, the sequels suck, yet for example Assassin's Creed 1 -> 2. People disliked 1, and loved 2.

D3mons0ul4509d ago

Hmmmm

Barrett >>>> Sazh

Tenkay234510d ago

Just like all other gaming compatriots with their annual sequels (CoD, Assassins Creed) or frequent DLC? Gaming companies want to make money first. They spent Years developing the engine for XIII they don't want it to go to waste so they decided to make a sequel addressing all of the fans dislikes about the first one.

RBLAZE19884510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

What really baffles me is how many improvements that famitsu seem to point out yet they scored FFXIII a 39/40 which, to me, says that I should take the review with a grain of salt either way. It sounds like a better game but apparently FFXIII was also a great game, worthy of only a point less.

The Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy Deserves a Remaster

Final Fantasy 13 was first introduced to us back in 2009, almost four years after Final Fantasy 12 was released, and fans had been eagerly anticipating the next installment. But when it finally arrived, there were mixed reactions, including complaints about its linearity, the lack of towns and NPCs, and the limited control over the characters. At the time, Square Enix kept its game production behind closed doors and didn't take in a lot of feedback — especially from Western fans.

The game has been revisited by many different Final Fantasy fans since then, and some, like myself, have come to love it again. Almost all staple entries in the series have found their way to modern consoles, so it's about time that the FF13 trilogy gets a remaster

I've been thinking about this. I agree. While I really disliked it at first I never played it again. After hating ff15 so damn much I just think it can't be worse then 15 and if I'm not mistaken atleast it's turn based. I need more of that in my life.

nitus10323d ago

I actually finished FFXIII and on the second playthrough found I actually liked the game.

Actually I have liked most of the FF games (I have not played FFIX unfortunately) and I do agree with you with regards to FFXV. Graphically IMHO FFXV is excelent but for some reason I just could not get enthusiastic in playing it.

As for "turn-based", I prefer active and real time although to be fair "turn-based" is a real plus especially when confronting a difficult protagonist. I found this to be especially the case when playing FFXXII where you could switch rapidly between "turn" and "active" although having a resonable knowledge of simple Boolean Algebra is IMHO essential when playing this game.

322d ago
Levii_92322d ago

Ridiculous comment, first of all i think you should replay 15, second of all that game is 10 times better than the XIII games especially the royal edition. And third .. turn based combat is a dying (almost dead) style of gameplay and i personally wont miss it at all so don’t act like that is some sort of big plus because XIII has it.. it is not.

jambola322d ago

Somebody needs to learn about subjective taste

shinoff2183322d ago

Ff15

Sucked imo. I don't need to give it another try. Last time was the 3rd time and I had 34 hours into it. It just wasn't good imo

Chriswynnetbh322d ago

How is turn based dying or almost dead? Pokémon is one of the biggest RPGs in the world and is and has always been turn based. To some it is a plus especially when it comes to FF since the first 10 of them all are and are arguably better games than any FF to come after

CDbiggen322d ago

XV was rubbish, but understandable given the development hell. That overworld for me is the biggest example, so strangely designed and empty. And parts of the story awkwardly cut for DLC, most egregious being that prompto part where he's like "I'm a clone", or whatever he was (it was that forgettable), and the other guys basically shrugging it off.

Tapani322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

Turn-based is alive and well: Pokemon, Dragon Quest, XCom, Civilization, Homeworld, Age of Wonders, Total War, Original Sin, Baldur's Gate, Warhammer, Yu-Gi-Oh, Company of Heroes, Wasteland, Pathfinder, Disco Elysium, Octopath Traveler, Chained Echoes and many, many more great games, both new and old, franchises and new IPs are selling well, reviewing well and sequels are coming.

If you don't play the game, maybe the turn-based has just died in/for you, but certainly the genre has never been so alive as in 2023! Plus, when you look at Final Fantasy franchise, it started going down in quality when it left turn-based combat behind. FFXVI may redeem some of the glory (and FFXIV was great), but the turn-based games were higher rated and deeper in terms of gameplay and had more interesting things to do in the world.

DarXyde322d ago

I'd say Persona 5 is one of the best of the best games in a couple of decades.

I don't think you manage that with a dying gameplay format.

shinoff2183322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

Levii92

Turn based is way funner imo then just some hack n slash rpg. I like both but prefer turn based.

Far as dying I doubt it. It's also kinda funny cause the best final fantasy have been turn based. Ff still to this day can't top ff6 through ff9. Interesting.

Far as someone who brought up persona 5. I dislike the art style so I've yet to play it but I'd throw dq11 in there. Best jrpg I've played in fkin years. Over a decade.

Last I was a bit iffy on chained echoes because of the sp and no traditional leveling system. I recently bought it. Looks gorgeous, story is fantastic so far, but I cannot for the life of me get over how much I truly hate the leveling system. It's just flat out whack to me. I'm still going to finish it cause unlike ff15 atleast chained echoes doesn't feel like a chore

goldwyncq322d ago

The XIII series (especially Lightning Returns) has far better combat than XV, and you don't need to watch an anime and a movie to make sense of the story.

FinalFantasyFanatic321d ago (Edited 321d ago )

15 was only fun for derping about in the wilderness, at least FF13 had a better story and was more coherent overall (plot, characters, gameplay, world, ect...).

15 was just beautify garbage, so much wasted potential, the Duke Nukem Forever of the FF franchise.

I really loved Persona 5, can't wait for P6 to be announced, I'd love ports of the first few games (we already have P3P/P4G/P5R available on almost everything now).

Hofstaderman322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

Thank you. A ton of FFXIII articles recently. Most of the people who like this game are not old enough to have played 4 to 9. Even 10 and 12 are vastly superior to this game. That being said a remaster would then make all the FF titles available on the PS platform.

jambola322d ago

Citation needed
Do you have some kind of official survey of ff 13 fans ages?
Would love a link
Also, all games are available on multiple systems, re released many times
"Not old enough" doesn't even make much sense

shinoff2183322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

That was part of what I was trying to say. I've gave 15 3 try ff13 deserves atleast a second. And like I said I could use some turn based in my life

I've also played through or played all of the ff games starting with ff1 way way way back.

goldwyncq322d ago

"Good" is subjective. I love FFIX but I know many fans who don't like it for the art style and the slow combat.

I_am_Batman322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

Recently replayed them and I agree a remaster would be great. The complaints about linearity are fair, but they only really apply to the first half of the first game and while I agree that it would've been nice to have proper towns, minigames and subquests, it didn't detract from the intriguing story, interesting characters, tactical gameplay and amazing soundtrack in my opinion.

XIII-2 fixes a lot of the issues of XIII and expands on the story in interesting ways. The combat and progression builds on top of the systems of XIII and the nonlinearity and discoverability of secrets is a big inprovement over the original game. It's easily the best game of the trilogy.

Lightning Returns was probably a bit too experimental for it's own good. It tried to reinvent the wheel for no reason. The solo party for most of the game and the outfit based combat felt like a downgrade over XIII-2 combat system. It does have a unique vibe, but the plot kinda goes off the rails and many of the story beats didn't land as much for me as they did in the first two games. The race against time aspect was an interesting idea, but it never felt like it mattered, because it wasn't much of a challenge to manage the remaining time even while doing all the subquests.

Eonjay322d ago

XIII-2 is one of the greatest games ever.

Snookies12322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

XIII-2 is by far the best of the trilogy. Went out of my way to get the Platinum trophy on it. Which is actually a fun one to go for. Didn't take too long, only about 70-80 hours to accomplish. Loved every second of it though.

Youngindy21322d ago

I don't think linearity is a fair critique, when every FF up until that point was fairly linear esp. in the first half of the game. People herald FF VII(including the remake), but it is just as linear as FFXIII was. The linearity complaints came at a time when open-world games were just starting to become a thing and people thought every game should be open-world, but now that every game is, people now want more linear experiences. Go Figure.

shinoff2183322d ago

Ff10 was pretty linear to. Haven't played through all of 13 but 10 was linear as fk until the end

I_am_Batman322d ago

Totally agree. I never fully understood why 10 was so universally praised when it had many of the same design philosophies xiii is criticized for.

CDbiggen322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

I felt the same for the most part except the LR combat system. I thought it was an upgrade on the party of three system the previous two games had as now you had more control over your moves with different sets being an L1/R1 click away, and could move the single character around in battle and attack limbs or tails of certain enemies, or reduce the distance between you and an enemy you're after saving ATB.

I_am_Batman322d ago

LR combat certainly has it's merits. I would've preferred it if it wasn't tied to the costumes which can make Lightning look quite ridiculous and out of place sometimes though.

But mainly I would've preferred to see an evolution of XIII-2 systems. Since they are so different it's obviously just a preference. Can't really compare them objectively.

CDbiggen322d ago

Yeah I get ya, and I can totally see why the costume part got to people. I'm someone that doesn't care what the character looks like as long as I'm happy with the stats (looking at Xenoblade). LR to me is just one of those odd games that I can't help respect for mixing things up, even if the outcome wasn't the best lol. But yeah too different to compare.

sadraiden322d ago

Why would a remaster be great? They exist in HD, on a console that is still compatible with modern televisions, and you just replayed it.

I_am_Batman321d ago

I replayed them on my PS3. I just think it would make sense for those games to be more accessible to Playstation gamers, which is where the majority of the modern FF fanbase is (due to the exclusivity deals of VII Re and XVI).

Why The Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy Has Some of The Best Music In The Series

so any game without no Uematsu has terrible music?

MehmetAlperTR479d ago (Edited 479d ago )

@Jambola nope... But in PS1 era we played FF7-8-9 and in a PS2 era FF10... They were all involved with Uematsu San. We grove up with him and his musics.. SO FF means, him and his music to us.

It's alright but I mean with so many other FF games it's not even in the top 10 for me

You just can't beat IX, VII, X and my personal favourite VIII when it comes to music

Even the theme song sucks, instead of just having an English version of the Japanese theme they got X Factors Leona Lewis to do the song which didn't sound like FF theme song.

FinalFantasyFanatic479d ago

Yeah, that ending song was terrible, I'll never be able to fathom why that was chosen, it feels so out of place with that game.

RedDevils479d ago

Lol is was my wtf moment.

SoulWarrior480d ago

I agree, regardless of the general consensus of the game itself, FF rarely lets down when it comes to the music at least.

porkChop480d ago

Nah. VIII has the best music in the series. IX is a close second.

Hofstaderman480d ago

Yes; eyes one me, man with the machine gun, waltz to the moon, the oath, maybe I’m a lion…FF8 has the best music in the series by far. I have the original OST, the orchestra arrangement, the piano arrangement, the Black Mages tracks and a few other albums. My four disc original OST is my pride and joy.

ManMarmalade480d ago

I agree on VIII. I've started growing really fond of X's lately.

GoodGuy09480d ago

Music was pretty good yes. Pretty much all FFs do even the crappy ones lol.
