(WGB) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Review

Baden of WolfsGamingBlog writes: "What little social life I actually did have died on 11/11/11 – the day Skyrim was released into the world. Those who know me can attest to the fact that I retain a special place in my heart for the Elder Scrolls series, especially for Oblivion which ate up hundreds of hours of my life. And so Skyrim has finally arrived after a long and arduous six-year wait. Sure, there’s been other games to slate my thirst and keep me from going mad, but none of them would truly make me happy, none of them could truly lay claim to my heart. But being an ardent lover of the Elder Scrolls series also means that I feel justified in ripping it to pieces and scrutinizing every aspect of it that I played in my near 70-hour time with the game to ensure that this review is completely fair."

Well deserved, like a back rub after after you've killed a lion with your bare hands. Not that I would do such a thing, it would eat my hands.

"scrutinizing every aspect of it that I played in my near 70-hour time with the game to ensure that this review is completely fair"

Didn't even get close to 1 third of seeing all the content then, still enough to give a fair review I guess. GotY imo.

As I mention at the end of the review, in the 70-hours played I didn't see even a fraction of what the game has to offer. It's just too freaking huge :D

Didn't read your review, I'm sure its a great review but I just don't have the time. My comment was more of a praise to Skyrim than a downplay on the review, I'm sure you understood that but better to make it clear anyway eh? ;)

It's great you spent so much time with the game for the review btw. Would be fantastic to see a table of stats showing how many hours each of the reviewers for all the major sites / magazines spent in the game for the review.

This is a really good review, I am glad I took the time to read it. I like that it covers both what is good about Skyrim and also what could be improved upon.

I'm glad you enjoyed the review, mate. I tried to be as fair as I could about the game, considering the final score that I gave it.

You did a great job. I liked your ending too:

"Skyrim is like a loved one; as you spend time with them and come to know them better, you’ll find more and more flaws, little or otherwise, in them, but you don’t give a damn because you love them."

This really summed it up. Skyrim is a great and very addicting game. It has flaws, but the game itself is so great you are able to forgive them.

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

anast19d ago

I tried, but it's a poorly made game that insults its customers.

lucian22919d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Nittdarko19d ago

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
