OXCGN’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Review: Buyer’s Remorse

OXCGN:

"Call of Duty is one of those series that has taken the gaming world by storm, and is undoubtedly one of the biggest, most recognizable names out there in gaming.

"Ever since the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007, the series has had a massive exponential growth with each iteration… from a business perspective.

"From a gamer and long-time fan’s perspective, though, there is absolutely zero growth.

"As someone who has been playing Call of Duty since the original title on PC in 2003, I feel it my duty to weigh in on Modern Warfare 3 the way it should be looked at: from the perspective of someone who has been there, done that more times than most."

Ooo that's harsh. But I get the feeling too that it is like a movie where you really don't do that much, but are propelled forward through enclosed space with little choices, and just shooting.

Spec Ops does rule though

Proeliator4542d ago (Edited 4542d ago )

Brutal.. but honest nonetheless.

The amount of paid Activision reviews out there is laughable and sad.

The more I play MW3 the more I am leaning towards 7 being overly generous. Personally I feel it falls between a 6 - 7. The game is unchanged other than a couple modes, perks and weapons. It literally is identical to the same engine we have been playing since last generation.

I think it runs average to pretty bad online. It's rare I am in a room where it runs great and the hit detection actually works. It's the same old, hear a bullet or 2, die, watch the kill cam to see the guy that killed you practically unloaded an entire clip in you. Where the hell is the sounds and animation to show that before I was killed? This has been going on for years in the COD series.

This game desperately needs a new engine and dedicated servers. I don't see myself even hitting level 1 prestige. I played it for an hour today, stopped and moved on to other games. A few of my friends played today and I didn't even bother joining them. This series is long in the tooth and I wish I would've rented it instead of buying it.

a 7 is not bad

1. (unplayable), (comes with a free plastic case)
2. (wretched), there is nothing to justify a purchase, but it can still be played
3. (bad) , nothing at all is original, nothing is special, its still playable,and a little fun at times but it loaded with bad framerates/glitches/, and the story is uninteresting.
4.(alright) the game plays pretty solid, the main person you play as is very interesting, but the story is real bad, there are many bugs, and the online is terrible, but you should have atleast some type of fun..,its a renter.
5.(medicore) average story, average gameplay, decent online, a few bugs here and there
6.( good) there is not much of a story but the online is good and the graphics are pretty darn good, it has tons of replayability, but the game does have more than a few bugs/glitches ect...
7. (excellent) the story is unique, the online is really cool, the main guy is likeable, not much glitches, a real joy to play, and it innovates, just not much replayability.
8(outstanding) great gameplay) fantastic graphics, not much of a story, hardly and bugs/glitches, it innovates, it has unique properties, and the replay value is good.
9(great) amazing story, great gameplay, good graphics, very unique, great online, does not innovate, very very few glitches/bugs, great value, endless replayability.
10( uncharted) beautiful, incredible story, endless replayability, funny, hardly and bugs/glitches, amazing graphics, this game is one of the few that innovate so much its staggering, it pushes developers to make games like this, it should be played by all.

Proeliator4542d ago

That would be in a logical world.

2011:

1 - 7 = unplayable
8 = mediocre
9 = good
9.1 - 9.3 = very good
9.5- 9.6 = great
9.7 = fantastic
9.8 = excellent
9.9 = GOTY
10 = doesn't exist

Takoulya4542d ago

Nah, the 10 would be MGS4 ;)

DonaldBeck4542d ago

yeah today's standards are out of whack.

Redlogic4542d ago

I expected more reviewers to have this same point of view, that COD is getting/or is stale.

PandemicPrawn04542d ago

OK.
I'm a COD newbee, I have resisted for years.
But my brother insisted that I borrow his COD collection and give it a try.

I might be missing somthing but, do these games play themselves or am I just doing it wrong?

I'm just playing on normal difficulty nothing major, but it just seems like I'm not acctually having to do much.

Can I get some pointers from my fellow gamers?

bozebo4542d ago (Edited 4542d ago )

I think you are supposed to try the multiplayer ;)

Find yourself CoD 1, 2 and 4 for the single player and ignore the rest.

Proeliator4542d ago

Play the first title and its expansion, United Offensive, on PC. They're quite cheap and offer some of the best of the FPS genre (UO is often hailed as the best expansion pack of all time, and it set standards of what an expansion should be). You can also play the original on Xbox live, Call of Duty Classic.

As bozebo said, pick up 2 and 4 as well. And then stop. That's where the quality ended. The PC versions of all these games still have solid playerbases, unlike the console counterparts, which are sadly now 90% hackers.

Call of Duty Players Disappointed by $80 B.E.A.S.T. Glove Bundle Deal

Recently, players of Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone were met with a new bundle featuring the B.E.A.S.T. Glove, inspired by King Kong's armament in the Godzilla x Kong movie. However, the $80 price tag attached to this themed accessory left many Call of Duty fans feeling underwhelmed.

Morons that allow themselves to be milked continuously by this company is the definition of irony.
Spend more $$ and you'll end up In easier lobbies so you win both ways when ya spend that cash

Controversy in the COD community feels like it happens within an alternate timeline. Activision will take the piss with something, there will be a momentary fuss about it, and then they will forget about it and carry on anyway. Repeat this cycle literally every year for the rest of time.

Gridknac8d ago

They call that a crack head! Thats what this is really about, its an addiction. People who dont smoke cigarettes look and laugh at the addicts that spend $8-$10 a pack, but they cant help themselves, they are addicted. That same analogy applies perfectly to the whole MT industry. Only an addict that was not thinking clearly would spend this kind of money on something so frivolous. A round of multiplayer provides the same high a person gets from scratching a lotto ticket, or putting money on a sports bet. MT in general need to really be regulated because you have a generation of kids becoming adults who grew up only knowing the MT era of gaming. Its normal to them and they will in turn teach their kids the same by just being a gaming parent and getting their kids involved with them in gaming. Thats why no matter how ridiculous the headlines keep getting out of the MT industry, it never seems to fade or go away.

I'm so tired of hearing about what they're doing with this game, its never going to change and it's never going to value the consumer over money, furthermore the people who engage so heavily in the microtransactions I guess allegedly are having a blast and can't wait to do it some more this year when the new version of the game drops.

Cheech And Chong Are Coming To Call Of Duty Because Everything Must Be Consumed

The famous comedy duo is the latest example of pop culture becoming one big grey blob

Christopher23d ago

Certain to have some sort of reference to their online store for CBD/THC chews, which is advertising heavily online the last month or two.

Sciurus_vulgaris23d ago

The randomness of the multiplayer characters is one of reason I quit playing COD after briefly returning in 2022. We got Space Marines, rappers, tree monsters etc. all in a series called “ Modern Warfare”.

OtterX22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

I think if there was ever a time for a competitor to rise up and take away some of Call of Duty's thunder, the time would be now. A military shooter that takes itself seriously, not sold out to Fortnitism. Easier said than done, I know... but the time is ripe.

I can't stand this stuff either.

Palitera22d ago

There are tons of MP shooters that make no profit, if you're looking for one of those

fsfsxii22d ago

You guys have been saying this shit since 2009. Fortunately, nobody’s bringing down cod anytime soon, if ever.

crazyCoconuts22d ago

I agree. I really didn't like how the silliness takes away the gritty origins. That and all the crazy effects... dunno. I'm still playing it but I'd love for someone to steal their cheese and cater to grittier players

OtterX22d ago

@fsfsxii It's not so much wanting COD itself to die as it is wanting this silliness to die. Like CrazyCoconuts said, it takes from the grittiness. Many OG COD players want a straightup Military shooter experience, not silly costume time at Carnival.

Profchaos22d ago

is this what the kids want these days a pair of iconic stoners who were big in the 70s and have kind of held on I enjoyed their movies decades ago but I never recall the movie where cheech infiltrates a enemy base while chong snipes for support guess I must of missed that one

Man I'm getting to old for this

Knightofelemia23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Cheech just looks so wrong in the picture.

Profchaos22d ago

Why just why. cod up in smoke

anast22d ago

They charge too much for a game that is kitsch.

MW3 missed its easiest opportunity to give us some of the best Call of Duty maps ever made

From Bootleg to Black Box, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 made a heartbreaking mistake by not remastering the bizarrely forgotten maps from its namesake.
