Guillermo Del Toro: Games We'll Be Playing in 2020 "Will Be F***ing Masterpieces"

"For videogame nerds, it's long been the subject of frustration: In the last three decades, there's never been a great videogame movie adaptation. There have hardly been any middling ones. Happily, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider looks a bit better with age. Prince of Persia was watchable but ultimately inane because it pandered. Silent Hill, based on the survival horror series from Konami, was disturbingly creepy for much of its 125 minutes. But it went off the rails at the end. And that's it. The rest of the canon pretty much stinks like zombie death."

But will they be fun?

They will look great but we wont have innovation.

Blink_444558d ago

How do you know they won't have innovation??

Pikajew4558d ago

We hardly get innovation now. All we get are big budget games.

Ingram4557d ago

^^@pikajew

you clearly haven't searched hard enough.

Catherine, Valkyria Chronicles, Katamari, Outland, El Shaddai, Red Dead Redemption to name a few.

And isn't it great that at least comics/movies/games are finally well realized in Arkham Asylum/city? that's refreshing for a licensed product to say the least, for me though.

SuperM4557d ago

developers are limited by hardware though. Next generation will allow for new innovations.

frostypants4557d ago

Demon's Souls/Dark Souls. Two of the most innovative games I've ever played. Gaming WAS in a rut but we started coming out of it in the last couple of years.

innovation is over-rated (not saying it's bad but people throw the word around too much now)...i mean what more can they really do besides just improve whats already there.

Fishy Fingers4557d ago

There's plenty of room for development of current as well as new ideas. Although I tend to agree "innovation" just seems like another gaming buzz word, like "generic".

Although looking at what's actually popular, it tends to favour sequels or just improvement over "innovation".

frostypants4557d ago (Edited 4557d ago )

ZombieAssassin, that's just because innovation typically entails doing something you would never expect. Anticipating innovation is kind of an oxymoron. You cannot base your expectations on what has been done.

Look at the online functionality of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, the way its online capabilities are purely a realtime extension of the single player mode. Many people *still* don't quite grasp it (i.e. the people still crying for functionality to play co-op with friends).

And look at the application of actual facial animations for players to interpret in LA Noire...not the actual technology that created them, but how they're used in the interrogations.

Neither of those things are stuff we'd likely have anticipated 5 years ago.

DA_SHREDDER4557d ago (Edited 4557d ago )

What's innovation to you guys? Besides open worlds and better graphics, what innovations do you want? Play games without controllers using your minds? Personally I think innovations is overrated. We've already hit a ceiling when it comes to games. PC games aleady look like real life, even console games, just look at GT5 and Heavy Rain. What I want is more bang for my buck. More content in the disc, not dlc. If anything we've been getting masterpieces since the NES days. My favorite rpg still to this day is Dragon Warrior4. All I want from Rpgs now is FF13 graphics, with the same types of overworld maps, castles, towns, caves, secret places, and dungeons, with the same turn based gameplay, and continuations of stories and sagas from RPGs of the old. Sure throw in a few new Ip's. Demon's Quest was a hybrid action rpg game that had the overworld map like Dragon Warrior, but then had castlevania type of action gameplay. Except with a gargoyle of course. Now adays I buy games like Ateliar Rorona, and all I see are small towns, cut scenes, and games that don't even compare to the predecessors. Wanna talk about innovations? Play Skies of Arcadia legends or the Dreamcast version. True rpg, with all sorts of twist. The limitations is only in the imagination and determination of the devs.

All I'm saying is people are making games less, "game", and just taking risk and using our wallets as guinea pigs to figure out what the next big thing is. I think Realism is the next big thing. The only thing to do from here, in my opinion, is whats already happening. Full destructibility, better graphics, more textures, better animations and cinematics. But then you got games like FF13 who take something that used to be great and loved by many, and turn it into a sideshow circus act. BTW, that is excluding what can be done with the operating system of consoles in the future. Im simply talking about software. As soon as you bring up what the hardware can do like satellite radio, playing games on tabs and then hooking them up to tv's, thus making them consoles, virtual reality. Thats when you're talking about something totally different.

frostypants4557d ago (Edited 4557d ago )

Look beyond graphics and control schemes. Gameplay is where innovation will emerge (and has been emerging).

You're likely not gonna find much of it in FPS's, because generally the overall gameplay has already been dictated when you set out to make an FPS.

Genki4557d ago

Innovation in and of itself doesn't make a game good, at all. The total package has to be well refined, and in a lot of cases what you may call innovation others may simply dismiss as a failed idea. There is most certainly a fine line between the two, and I'm sure you've played many a game with "innovative" features that were poorly implemented and flat out didnt work.

Games need to be fun, satisfying, and entertaining before they are anything else. It's the nature of the hobby.

Games have been masterpieces since the late '80s/early '90s. Learn your history.

xX_Altair_Xx4557d ago

Yeah, I was thinking; I still think gaming's golden age was the late 90s/early 2000s.

bozebo4557d ago (Edited 4557d ago )

The golden age is probably to come in about 20-30 years to be honest.

Think about how long the movie industry has been around and especially how long there has been the written word (there are still amazing new movies and books being released).

Games give more of a scope for creativity than any other form of media.

True, there has been a slump in masterpiece game releases in the current console generation. But there is new blood entering the industry at a rapid rate these days.

The faster publishers F-&k off so developers can make what they want, the better; they are no longer needed in this digital world.

SnakeCQC4557d ago

i dont think we will ever have a golden age as things progress they always be better.

Silent Hill Game Awards Tease Was Meant To "Tickle The Ribs Of Konami," Del Toro Says

When asked on a recent podcast if the director was involved in any Silent Hill-related projects, del Toro said, "No, not at all."

What makes sense to me is that much of what is Silent Hill is due to Keiichiro Toyama and Masahiro Ito. Not Del Toro, Not Kojima. I think the first crew did a great enough job telling that story/world/hell that you two jackoffs were so inspired and decided you needed to tell /re-tell it (and of course take credit for it).

tronyx12848d ago

Lol, you talk like PT never happened and they just said Silent Hill was always theirs.

Levii_92847d ago

How embarrassing .. i think you should edit your comment one more time or delete it.

Atom666847d ago

People might be upset that the "jackoff" line is a bit far, but you make a fair point. This is Toyama's baby more than anyone else's.

If we're really be honest, SH2 was the best of the series for most players. I bet few people could even name the teams that developed all of the games past SH3 once Konami started whoring the series out to others.

Of all of the people and teams associated with SH, a lot of people seem to put Kojima and Del Toro at the top for whatever reason. They've had the least to do with this franchise of anyone before them. They didn't get to make even 1 full game.

I would have loved to see them actually turn the franchise around, but PT was 7+ years ago, and never amounted to anything else.

When the fans mention Silent Hill to Konami all they hear is that trumpet sound you hear in a Peanuts cartoon when the adults talk. I pretty much gave up on a new, remake, remaster SH game from Konami which is sad because the SH franchise is a great franchise. Sure there were some games that were bad but what franchise doesn't have the odd game that is bad. But Slitterhead has my interest now and I can't wait to play it.

pietro1212847d ago

I wished we got Silent Hills, but more preferably I wish Team Silent get back together for more more SH project. In the mean time I look forward to Slitterhead.

annoyedgamer847d ago

Hopefully Del Toro is on his game because his latest film Antlers ended like a massive dumpster fire.

ED-E847d ago

Del Toro didn't direct or wrote Antlers, he was one of three producers on it.

Stonilein847d ago

We alll know a new game is coming its just a matter of time, Konami would be idiots by not releasing a new Silent Hill game theres such a high demand for quality horror games these days

Orchard847d ago

"Konami would be idiots by not releasing a new Silent Hill game theres such a high demand for quality horror games these days"

Let me introduce you to Konami... the company sitting on Silent Hill & Metal Gear Solid...

Eidolon847d ago

But we'll still get a silent hill pachinko game right? 🙏

Orchard847d ago

Definitely, and they’ll probably announce it like it’s an AAA remake like the Snake Eater pachinko.

Knightofelemia847d ago (Edited 847d ago )

All Konami does is milk anniversary editions like Contra and Castlevania add SH characters to Dead by Daylight make an SH pachinko machine so they can retain the name and characters. They released a soccer game that was well just shit like I said Konami is happy milking their older franchises and focus on pachinko machines. They managed to squeeze out Kojima and screwed him over. They don't care about the gaming world or SH if they did they wouldn't have gone out of their way to scrap the PT demo, pull the PT demo, and make sure the PT demo does not work on PS5. Konami has walked away from the fans that made them what they were on the NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, PS2, OG Xbox, PS3, XB360 days. I use to be a Konami fan but like them I walked away from Konami like they walked away from the gaming fans. And anything new about SH is just speculation or rumors which turn out to be a dead end. Capcom proved remakes can be done and still sell well with the RE2 remake. Fans are, or, were waiting for Konami to follow suit with an SH, remake, reboot, or a new game. But all you get from Konami's side of the fence is crickets chirping. Sitting there waiting for Konami to announce something new with SH is worse then sitting and watching paint dry.

We already know who the pro and antagonist are. We know it has something to do with black holes. We know it takes place in an alternate United States. We just don't know the exacts about the story line. An incredible amount of research has been done studying nearly every aspect of the game.

ts actually funner not knowing and trying to figure it out.

Goldby2331d ago

its not surprising as he only has his likeness in the game, he has stated he has no other input in the game itself.

B1uBurneR2330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

Lol. So... this Games a hit based off the creator not his creation so far. I don't get the hype around a game no one has an idea about.

Ausbo2330d ago

The hype is hideo kojima. All his games get this hype. The thing I find funny is how people think this will come in 2018/2019. This is minimum a 2020 game. Maybe even later than that.

Gatsu2330d ago

Kojima said himself that he plans to release it before 2019...

mafiahajeri2330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

Its a PS4 exclusive being supported by Sony. Its also being created by one of the best video game creators of all time, and you dont get the hype?

Thats like saying I dont get the hype behind a new R* game.

Its not like Kojima moved to phone games like Konami. Its a full on slap to the face to Konami, so you know Kojimas gonna be working day and night to make sure this is stellar.

If you look at how fast Kojima opened his studio and created this game, you can tell hes still got major beef with Konami.

Its a matter of proving them wrong, which is a good thing for gamers as this would have probably released way later if he didnt have his beef with Konami.

Looking forward to the PSX panel. Hopefully they announce a release window.

B1uBurneR2330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

So the game could be called whatever and the trailer could of been a dot zooming in and out of focus for 2 mins and people would still be hyped?

He's previous works doesn't guarantee success but it's something to consider... I get that. Too soon to put all eggs in the basket though.

So we are hoping he delivers as he's done in the past Is this the case with this Dev? I thought we would have learned already this generations hypes things that don't live up to the hype and games have a launch date with a post launch fixes.. hype can wait... at the least let's us know what to be hyped about as far as game information goes.

Goldby2330d ago

@B1uburner

there is information for the game in regards to subject matter. Kojima leaves clues in all of this interactions with the media and fans. the dog tags around norman's neck are equations to black hole theories and quantum physics. he spoke of how until now, most multiplayer games have been the sticks (keeping enemies away) where this game will be the rope (keeping friends and value close)

theres even some theories out there based on character models and designs that this might be a spiritual successor to Silent hill.

What we do know is that they have been working with GG on the Decima engine to improve its uses for what he needs, but the fact he chose (or help build the engine) says what is possible with that engine and his idea for the game. heck he has an office in Amsterdam at the GG studio, and GG has an office in the Kojima Productions Studio.

The man knows how to hype up a game, but he does it in the right way, instead of plastering and constantly talking about his game, he leaves the info intertwined with his day to day operations, everything he says, posts and shows has been carefully orchestrated to show only the keen eye'd viewer what the game is about

sorane2330d ago

It's not exclusive it's coming to PC also.

sorane2329d ago

I love people disagreeing with FACTS hahahaha THIS IS NOT A SONY EXCLUSIVE!!!!!! Get over it fanboys. The best place to play this game will be on PC.

guyman2328d ago

It's not too late to get a Ps4. I know it hurts but Death Stranding will be a ps4 exclusive, and will probably be the best looking game when it releases on the pro, lmao.

I think what he included in the trailer looks really interesting. The actors for this game are odd, the whole umbilical cord attached to everything is interesting. I was interested because of everyone's hype, now I'm interested in how the trailer is connected and the crazy theories that people have created. Interesting and bored.

Because Death Stranding won't be Xbox.

franwex2330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

To a degree I would agree, but he has done some awesome stuff.
Metal Gear Solid is considered one of the best PSX games. MGS3 is my favorite ps2 game and one of my favorite pieces of media of any kind.
For that reason alone he has my interest. I’m not overly hyped, but i am interested.
