Halo Anniversary Dev: Originality is over-rated

“I don’t know why derivative is always necessarily bad,” says Matthew Karch of Halo Anniversary dev team Saber Interactive – who feels that familiar franchises such as Gears of War automatically get higher review scores than original IP which might share similar mechanics.

originality is what makes games unique and not generic

i agree that sometimes a good game dosent need any original idea's(ahem rage)but sometimes its the only thing that makes a game so good

Aloren4576d ago

And yet games full or original ideas can be just bad games. In a way, he's right. Originality is nice, it's just not necessary.

rezzah4576d ago

All stories have to come to an end while others (originality) have to begin.

Major_Nelson4576d ago

I love Master Chief
Infact i'm gonna boot up halo 3 right now and put on my master cheef helmet and have a few rounds

Major_Nelson4576d ago

Who Disagreed !
I'm serious i've got my Master Chief helmet on right now !!

Micro_Sony4576d ago

I think its Killzone fans who are disagreeing.

Maybe you should buy a Helghast helmet and play some Killzone 3 : )

palaeomerus4576d ago

It's not the Legendary Edition cat-helmet is it? If it is just lie to me and tell me it's not. Please. I don't want to have to visualize that.

GrayFox0074576d ago

Maker of game with no originality thinks originality is over rated. Hardly surprising is it.

Most developers lack the talent to come up with new "good" ideas.

Chuk54576d ago

Personally, the anniversary editoin is refreshing in a holiday season so concerned with military shooters. Sci-fi shooters like gears, resistance, killozone, and halo have their own personalities, where as most military shooters now are just blending together.

This game isn't just a port it's a re-imagining of the game, that's what makes me so excited.

Jocosta4576d ago

A-friggin-men, modern military shooters are an absolute bore.

Saber Interactive CEO Says KOTOR Remake Is 'Alive and Well'

IGN:

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is one of gaming's most elusive projects. But we finally have a real, concrete update on what's going on.

Saber Interactive is still working on it, and according to the CEO, it's "alive and well."

CobraKai15d ago

It was announced in 2021 and there hasn’t been so much as a screen shot. Hopefully it is alive but i dunno if it’s actually well

Eonjay14d ago

I'm just happy this game didn't die in the deadly Embrace like so many others.

CrimsonWing6915d ago

I’ll believe it when I see it.

SimpleSlave15d ago

As long as it's not AssPyre doing this, there's still some hope.

*Takes a look at the games Saber Interactive have developed...

Oh, fu...

Tody_ZA15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

What's the point of this comment from the CEO without a screenshot of the game in progress or announcement of a trailer? It's been a long time since the announcement and absolutely nothing to show for it which is not a good sign.

I was beyond hyped when this was announced, but I've long accepted the reality that it's not going to happen, unless something concrete is shown.

Compare this to Delta Snake Eater which has more than shown its existence off.

KwietStorm_BLM15d ago

Showing a screenshot doesn't prove or disprove it's development status. With everything that's happened with Aspyr, the last thing they want to do right now is show a product that isn't ready for public viewing. The reason the CEO spoke up is because of the game being in the news recently. Metal Gear is an entirely different situation and has no correlation other than being a remake.

Saber Interactive Sale Has Been Officially Confirmed By Embracer Group

Embracer Group has officially confirmed that Saber Interactive has been sold for $247 million, following news yesterday that the studio has removed all references to the mega-publisher from its official website.

Speaking in a statement to investors today, Embracer Group confirmed that the sale has resulted in the company ceasing all operations in Russia, with Saber Interactive being sold to a group of private investors at Beacon Interactive, which is helmed by Matthew Karch, the co-founder of Saber Interactive.

As a result of the sale, Saber Interactive will retain a number of studios including Nimble Giant, 3D Realms, Sandbox Strategies, New World Interactive, and Slippage Ironworks. Embracer, meanwhile, keeps Zen Studios, 4A Games, Tripwire, Beamdog, and Tuxedo Labs among others.

OtterX35d ago

That's great, at least Saber won't die in the embrace. I really enjoy Snowrunner, and Dakar Desert Rally is pretty fun w a wheel.

badz14935d ago (Edited 35d ago )

$247mil?? for what? smells like money laundring

BISHOP-BRASIL34d ago

Embracer paid 525 mil just a bit over 4 years ago for Saber and now sells it back for less than half... And for a company with heavy presence (and possibly investors looking to move their money around the embargo) in Russia and even Belarus... Suspicious don't even begin to describe it.

Knightofelemia34d ago

Better then being pawned off to Tencent. I think Beacon Interactive is a better fit for them.

Puty34d ago

They should go back to Dunder Mifflin.

Embracer confirms studio switch for ‘AAA project’, following claims of KOTOR trouble

From VGC: "Embracer Group may have confirmed that the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake has switched developers.

Bloomberg claimed last month that developer Aspyr Media had stopped working on the game and that the future of the title was up in the air.

Embracer had confirmed in May that Aspyr parent company Saber Interactive was also working on the game, and some of Bloomberg’s sources said they believed it was possible Saber had taken over the development of the project entirely."

Maybe Saber can turn things around

Mr_cheese609d ago

That worked well for Dunder Mifflin

RaidenBlack609d ago (Edited 609d ago )

you get one awesome point [✶] for today

darthv72609d ago

Great... now i have that song in my head [Dunder Mifflin is a part of 'Sahbrey']

VenomUK609d ago (Edited 609d ago )

Another remake RPG changed developer, that of FFVII Remake. The game was well-received so hopefully this shift to Saber Interactive leading development signals a desire at the highest level of Embracer Group & Sony to make the Star Wars KOTOR Remake be of superior quality.

Vithar609d ago

good take your time and make this perfect

AmUnRa608d ago (Edited 608d ago )

no game is perfect....not one.

MadLad609d ago

I never understand how people botch rereleases and remasters/remakes.

It's like being an editor. Virtually all the work was done for you. All you need to do is clean it up and make it more digestible.

RaidenBlack609d ago

That's Remastering.
But for Re-'make'-ing ... only the story and design concepts can be used/referred ... everything else needs to be 'made' again.

MadLad609d ago

To an extent.
I won't even pretend to know the ins and outs of game development. I have amateur coding experience at best.

But even on the coding side, as long as it's written in the same language, which virtually every marketed game is, the code can be dumped and used as a reference point for a remake in a new engine. You just need to know the pros and cons of both engines, and adjust accordingly. That's a lot of work taken off of the needs of the coders.
As far as I've seen they're looking to keep the gameplay similar to the original, so a lot of the code made for the original can be reused and adjusted to whatever standards they want for the remake.

It's different in situations such as FF7 Remake, where virtually everything was fundamentally changed; from gameplay to being fully 3D.

But I guess my point is if you're a "games studio" whose talent can't handle a remake/remaster properly, maybe you should question if your team actually has the talent to be a games studio.

CrimsonWing69609d ago

I’m not trying to take a dig at you or make you feel dumb, but do you know the difference between a Remake and Remaster? Because it doesn’t sound like you do at all.

CorndogBurglar609d ago

A remake is when they literally remake the game from the ground up.

A remaster is what you're talking about, where they use existing assets and code and make the original version "better".

DragonWarrior19609d ago

Wasn't Saber running the Witcher 3 current gen port and was taken off of that abruptly? Doesn't seem very wise to give it to them.

RaidenBlack609d ago

That was a smaller studio under Saber's Russian division. The Russo invasion caused CDPR to sieze any business with Saber's Russian division.
And Saber is a pretty big company and is headquarted in Florida. And their offices are spead out all over NA and EU.
