He was the co-founder, chairman, and former chief executive officer of Apple Inc. and was the driving force behind Apple's surge as a consumer tech and computer company with the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

There was a time when everyone expected Apple would be dead by the end of the 90's.

Steve Jobs made sure that didn't happen. His legacy is more than just an iPhone or an iPad, it's the fact that today, you can actually buy an Apple product.
Microsoft invested 150 million dollars to help Steve Jobs save a dying Apple, but never gets any credit.

I see his legacy different than most because I believe the capabilities of Apple products are grossly over-hyped. While people were using MP3 players, downloading digital music and playing Quake on smartphones for years prior, Apple made these products accessible to a mainstream market that
had struggled with technology for 20+ years. More than Apple innovates, they refine and repackage.

He also used his experience and contacts from Pixar and Disney to bridge the gap between the entertainment industry and online services. The introduction of iTunes wasn't remarkable as concept, software, or technology, but its licensing agreements and business model were.

So to me, the true legacy
of Steve Jobs is bringing the benefits of modern information technology to the mainstream population.

some say his last thoughts were probably "no one is happy that the new iPhone is the 4S and not the 5."

Quite frankly, the moment he steped down at Apple, I was almost sure it would come to this rather sooner than later.

Steve Jobs, although very concious of what his limits were (as he expressed himself on the letter when letting go of his job), was also a very passionate man about his work and if he was stepping down it couldn't be something minor.

Even so, it doesn't make it any less shocking, everytime we had seen Jobs he was not just presentable, he looked like a health guy, and at relatively young age... It's not something you grow used to.

But I have a personal thought on Cancer/Aids, etc.. My thought is the fact that... with all the cash fundraisers/telethons etc. that people do non-stop all the time and all the multi-millions thats made from each one. That to say there ISN'T a cure for some of this stuff seems extremely bogus to me. I feel we'll never see a cure EVER in our life times and after... as I feel by letting such diseases exist creates a sense of "balance" in human population control... just MY thought though!

I can't say I was much of an Apple fan but Jobs was legend. Anything he touched turned to gold. He turned Apple around and made it the most valuable company in the world. The iPhone changed the way we used mobiles. The iPad started the tablet trend. And I remember when iPad was first announced everyone laughed and said it will never catch on. This is really sad and I can't imagine any other stranger's death affecting me as much as his. A truly great man with a great list of achievements.

For those of us who always watch the keynotes, and the developers it will be different without him.

It's sad to hear of another's death even if you don't know them. But I have to respectfully disagree with people who are saying he "changed the world" or "made it a better place". At the end of the day he headed a large corporation that sold phones and tablets - didn't exactly do much for the majority of mankind.

As a comparison Ralph Steinman died last week of the same cancer, just days before he was to receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine. His research into the human immune system is what makes a lot of vaccines/medicines that we take for granted possible. That is a major contribution but his name was barely mentioned in the news. Remember, I'm not disrespecting Jobs, but I think greater perspective is needed.

He didn't just head Apple he was co-founder and he also created Pixar. And things such as iPhone, iTunes, iPod, iPad etc all DID change how we use technology today. I remember when iPhone released all other phones on the market were shit mostly. I don't even own an Apple product but anyone who denies the influence Jobs had on tech is a bit off.

Actually what he did was that he made technology appealing to the common folk who unlike the rest of us has problems with how to deal with it. It takes a genius to simplify complicated technology. As much as I hate Apple I wouldn't dare look down on what Steve Jobs has achieved.

This is so sad. It came like a bomb when I read it. Steve has not just change technology, but the entire world and how we communicate to each other. Steve was one of the best leaders I ever known and he is a big icon, visionary and a legend.

Very sad, but I'm not that shocked, the poor guy has been battling with cancer for years and in his last speech on TV he made, dude looked VERY, VERY frail which is why I can understand why he stepped down, he was in no condition to run things, he looked very weak.
He was a genius and will be missed. My condolences goes out to his family. He changed the game big time on how technology came to be what it was and is now.

He's not that great of a person. Just because he was a great businessman, doesn't make him a great person. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are great men. They also happen to be great businessmen. People seem to love Jobs simply because of his products, yet they know nothing about him.

I truly hope in his will he does something with his money to help society. And yes, there is a difference between charity and philanthropy. I'm not saying he has to just give his money away but for billionaires to just horde their money when the world needs help the most, kind of disgusts me. He could start programs that allow the less fortunate to contribute to society other than continue to suffer and be a burden. It's as simple as helping people get an education. There are many other examples. It's pretty sad IMO.

Even if you didn't like him or Apple you need to confront reality, without him technology wouldn't be so driven, he was pure competition that fueled the business and without him there is one less person to push heat on other people. Sure he wasn't the greatest person alive, but who said we had to?, we never signed a contract saying we had to donate money to other people to contribute to stuff.

Jobs will always be legendary for burying the competition with words alone. He is right up there next to Walt Disney
