What's The Deal With Russian Games?

OXCGN:

"I’m a man of history, but let’s face it; Russia has only given the world three things: Vodka, Tetris and the Faberge egg. (We won’t talk about the Lada automobile or Red Communism…).

"Apart from the profound message embodied within the annals of Tetris, Russia doesn’t give us very much in terms of interactive entertainment.

"The few titles that do come out of The Motherland, though, have some sort of air about them that chills me to my very core.

"So, what exactly IS the deal with Russian games?"

I agree completely with this piece, there really is something about Eastern Europe games that just isn't right... in a good way, of course.

These games if you look at them are all post apocalyptic. Always have a lot of radiation, the world is always destroyed and you always have to find a way to survive in it.

I think that is something that speaks to the Russian people and this is what Russians like.

I'm considered an Eastern European as well by the West even though where I'm from (Hungary) we consider ourselves central Europeans but I think all kinds of games can come out from Eastern Europe but there isn't enough money in Eastern Europe to make many games unlike in the West.

I think Eastern Europe is still dealing with the damage that communism caused and still trying to get back in its feat, which is really hard so money is tight and the last thing people think about is making video games. But when they do, you'll see games that are mostly depressing because that's what usually is the popular feeling in Eastern Europe.

STALKER and Metro 2033 are awesome and Russia along with all the many European Devs are really cranking out some killer games.

Quagmire4581d ago

Whats the deal with russian games, and you mention two franchises.

Seriously? I mean both franchises were effectively made by the same devs, first they made STALKER, then the head devs formed their own team to make Metro.

Its like saying whats the deal with American games, and then naming Black and Bodycount.

fail article is fail.

Not to mention the author doesn't recognize russian classical music, paintings, film or literature. If he did he might have some clues to explain these games...

Voxelman4581d ago

What about Elven Legacy, King's Bounty, Age of Pirates or Hammerfight? You know games actually developed in Russia not the Ukraine like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Metro 2033...

Its kinda nice that they most of the time use the cutting edge technology available on the PC and no matter what the sales figures are don't whine about spending so much money behind the PC version. cough ** Crytek , Ubisoft ** cough

I hope they keep this trend up .... eagerly waiting for STALKER 2 and Metro LL ....

What's the deal with games lately in general: so many seem depressing and apocalyptic. Hurray for pure fun adventure like Uncharted!

Metro Video Game Series: A Comprehensive History

The Metro video game series started with a humble b-list title, before building a strong fanbase and becoming a pioneer in the industry.

Never got into Exodus, but 2033 was excellent.

kevco3371d ago

Yeah, Exodus just didn't grab me either, sadly.

I absolutely loved 2033 and Last Light, however. Played them both on 360 and then again with the remasters!

anast71d ago

I just started it and it is already miles better than the first 2 which are dated.
