Magazine gives Super Mario Galaxy... 11 out of 10

Super Mario Galaxy is getting rave reviews all around the planet. It seems Mario Galaxy is not only great or excellent but it beats perfection. Nintendo la Rivista Ufficiale, an Italian gaming magazine, has awarded an unprecedented 11 out of 10 to Super Mario Galaxy. (See the scanned magazine page below.)

Mario Galaxy is a superb game and probably one of the best of all time but this is pure dumb and childis to give 11 out of 10. I can't believe there could be reviewers dumber than GameSpot's but here they are...

Well, Half Life 2 is one of the best games ever but even that magazine did was utterly stupid and childish. Has a movie magazine or a tech one ever done something this childish? It's like fanboy talk not official review.

Does it get any more absurd? I've played it, beat it and reviewed it... It's a good game, but it's not revolutionary and it's not perfection or above it. I gave it an 8 out of 10 and that was being generous. It offered up nothing knew to people who've been playing mario since he 1st stepped into 3-d space.

As I stated in my blog review... You control mario like you have for over 10 years now. With an analog stick. That's not really revolutionary to me.

If you look at the grading on the side of the article, one of the categories received a 9, while the rest received 10's. Somehow overall, the game is an "11" though. :D
If it wasn't on a Nintendo fanboy site, it probably wouldn't be amusing, but that's all it is.

Actually, the overall is more than the sum of its parts in almost all cases with reviews.

a game might get catagories like 7,8,9,7,9.5, and get a total score of 9.5, because its just got what it needs to get a total of more than that.

I think that's as it should be, though how I feel about a score of over 10 on a 10 point scale is something else...

While it's true that Nintendo has it's own brand of annoying fanboy, this sort of thing in a single isolated magazine can't even touch the level of horrificly annoying Zealotry expressed by the Sony and Microsoft fanboys on a daily basis. These scores seem mostly arbitrary anyway. If people want to read a review, they should be paying more attention to what the reviewer actually has to say about the game anyway. This 1-10 system has become nothing more than a ranking system for whatever the current games in a given time period are. Which can't help but take popularity into account rather than quality. Which leads to the flood of 10's we've gotten lately, and BS "11's" like this one. Which translates such scores into a joke. That being said, this seemingly obscure little Nintendo Magazine is just catering to it's own fans. Something like this normally would never see the light of day outside of that little world.

Men, editorial reviews are just meaningless. They hold as much credibility as horse dung sold as perfume. Editorial reviewers don't even give a toss any more about how blatantly daft their reviews are and they jsut don't care. They know the vast majority of the gaming community now are sheep to reviews and will just say and do what ever they want.

They have no accountability anymore and the sad thing is they just don't care about that at all. The industry is really a mess this gen, argh! This is just sad.

This is probably the most unprofessional thing I've seen in gaming, where professionalism is a must. For a magazine company to allow a reviewer to discredit and make a mockery of it is inconceivable, so I have to assume the magazine as a whole was all for this, which makes it all the more astounding. Platform specific or not.

There never has, and never will be a game developed which truly deserves an 11/10. And there are a very limited amount of games created which actually deserve a perfect 10/10, off the top of my head I can think of 2, both of which were last gen.

i have mario galaxy and i have to say that i dont think it is that great, i played the game last night for an hour and to be honest i had to stop playing it cause it made me feel ill , when you are on the level where you have to jump from differant planets the camera angles made me quiezy, as good of a game as this is i think that it is being over rated, its mario 64 given a revamp for the wii.

Score values in game reviews don't mean anything anyway. Ten, eleven, what's the difference? The reviewer found the game great, probably beyond his expectatives of what a 10 would be. In his reasoning, Mario Super Galaxy got an eleven because it is superior to the other games that received a ten. It is easier to give a 11 than to re-evaluate every score he gave in the past.

It's just stupid that most Microsoft games tend to get 10s or 9s when they are not even around 7, 8 or 9. I am not a nintendo fan nor sony I have all 3 systems, but when I see a game review around 9 or 10 -mostly 360 games- I quickly buy it & it just turns out to be massivly overrated & doesn't even deserve 7.

Obviously the magazine has decided that the game is not only perfect, but has exceeded their expectations. That's their opinion, and giving the game an 11/10 is just a whimsical way of expressing that. Of course if you are taking the score literally, then it is mathematically impossible.

Don't get too caught up in the details without realizing what the review score boils down to, which is that Mario Galaxy is a great game.

2 comments. first, I dont see why people hate that different sites/mags give such varying ratings in reviews. I love it. before buying a game I usually seek out the highest scored review AND the lowest score (and maybe a few in the middle) I want to know why someone hated it and why someone loved it. I think it gives me a better picture.

Im a hardcore gamer and I have only a wii. The way I see it ps3 and xbox are pointless when you have a computer. Only reason I have a wii is because its unique and despite the fact that i'm a hardcore gamer who plays mostly FPS games. I still enjoy the wii for a nice break from the norm.

Plus I get all my games for free. (uh oh more flaming for that one lol)

have fun paying for ur constant upgrades on ur comp just to p;ay the newest game. that and a pc doesnt have all the good games. i mean kingdom hearts, final fantasy 13, ninja gaiden, heavenly sword, guilty gear accent core, dead or alive 4, soul calibur 4, metal gear solid 4, white knight story, i cud go on, on how many good games u will miss. but atleast u get the good shooters....well the good single player ones that is, u wont be getting warhawk but *shrugz, if ur fine with wat u've got then aslong as ur happy lol

You both have your points. I can't say I disagree with either of you. The bottom line is that the PC version of games run better and look better. Team Fortress 2 for example, runs laggy with 8 players on the xbox 360 but runs like a dream and looks better on the PC.

However, it's also true that the PC recieves vastly smaller amounts of games, and when you're talking action games (which are the majority of your examples) there really aren't many at all. The Games for Windows initiative is helping that, and making them better to play on PC when they are available (because action games and driving games imo play better with a controller vs a keyboard)

I have a decent PC that will run anything out there, maybe not 100% at full but it will run them well enough to not lose anything important. I also have a couple of consoles. I use them both but when I have the decision I definitely go PC.
