Dead Island Review - JPS

"The zombie fad is back and the undead have been quickly engulfing the gaming scene. With gamers enjoying Left4Dead, Dead Rising, Undead Nightmare, and Call of Duty’s zombies mode, it’s easy to see how saturated the market is with the living dead. Techland is looking to add to this expanding list with their newest title Dead Island." - JPS

The reviews on this game are very mixed...

Myst4613d ago

Agreed seems like it will probably stick in at around 8 or so. Though due to the day one patch I wonder if that will change some of the reviews or not since their are a lot of bug fixes going on.

fluffydelusions4613d ago

Yeah, I think I will pick it up anyway since I'll need something till gears 3 comes out.

Myst4613d ago

Heh seems like everyone is going to be going for this game until other stuff comes out. For me it will be until KoF13 and Dark Souls comes out.

LightofDarkness4613d ago

It seems like people who really enjoyed Fallout 3 will quite like the game. Those who found it to be a dull or overly directionless affair will not.

While I liked Fallout 3, I liked the IDEA of Fallout 3 more than the actual game, and it seems like this is a similar enough experience. I doubt I will be picking this one up, though I can understand why others wouyld enjoy it.

I don't understand why when it comes to Zombies people keep saying about saturation... There is saturation in about every area, but suddenly when it comes to the Living Dead it is a big issue!

I mean let's be honest.... how many RECENT and GOOD Zombie movies have there been?

There has only been 1 Zombie TV show and that has been recent!

And when it comes to games it has only been fairly recently that we have had a glut of them.... and some like L4D are not on every platform.
Most Zombie games have not been great, and most Zombie fans are still waiting for that definitive Zombie experience!

So why do the people who do not like Zombies, or have grown bored of them feel the incessant need to complain about there being too many?
Can't they just NOT play them?
Perhaps go play something else?

I personally am still waiting to play the ultimate Zombie game, and waiting for a few more Decent Zombie movies to come out (as let's be honest... most are shit).
Dead Island looks like a big step in the right direction... and I look forward to playing it... but I don't think it is the Zombie game I am waiting for!

EDIT: and I'm not talking about this thread... just in general people complaining about too many Zombie games!

DanSolo4613d ago

Yeah I agree, I liked Zombieland.... not a great "Zombie" movie.... but a good horror/comedy Zombie movie!

One-X4613d ago

Some people are forgiving on small bugs, or parts of the game like bad voice acting and bad storyline. But some guys however, are quite cynical about the bugs this game has.

Personally I'd rate it around the 8 mark, but reviews of 6 and etc for this game seem crazy... It's a gorgeous open world zombie RPG game, with the game mechanics and the style, that to me is deserving of at least an 8. Haters gonna hate though.

Fallout 3 with zombies is the way I sum up my thoughts on this game. And I loved Fallout 3 despite it's bugs. >.>

unknownhero11234613d ago

what I don't get though is that some reviews are saying it's nothing like the trailer. I can't speak for the main story but some of the side quests are dark and depressing. seriously, watch some of the side quests on youtube. they do at least come close to fitting the feel of the trailer.

as for the mixed reviews, this is an new IP and sometimes people can be really harsh towards them.

Revolver_X_4613d ago

I think any new IP these days gets no love. I mean I completely agree. 8 seems like a very accurate score. I watched as much of the videos on youtube that i wanted to without ruining my experience. im still impressed with the game. Graphical particulars like mouths moving and buggies here and there. What do you expect with the shear vastness of the world. i for one am sick of reviewers and fans alike bashing on anything that isnt Call of Duty, Halo, or Gears of War. But new IPs are in an uphill battle nowadays. the review of this game from IGN seems to be the most objective and realistic review of the game. either buy it or not, but quit with the comments on how theres too many great titles this winter. it's just now turning fall season. that excuse is not valid, just dont comment period.

I need to choose btwn this and Gears 3. I think I'll pick this up when it gets cheaper since I'm more interested in the story/MP of Gears.

Dead Island 2 devs believe a Dead Island remake would be a “mistake”

We might be in the age of remasters, but it doesn't look like the Dead Island 2 devs believe remaking the original game is the right move for the series.

but remakes require far less effort for these companies and they can still charge $70 for them!

Feel like everyone makes fun of Skyrim re-releasing like 18 times yet applaud these remasters elsewhere. Would much prefer NEW games

CrimsonWing69403d ago

Making sequels really is the way to go. Otherwise we'll be stuck playing only the first entry, forever!!!

Dead Island's 2011 reveal is still the best game trailer of all time

Josiah Motley of KnowTechie writes: "I love video game trailers. While I don’t believe they are an integral part of a game’s success (especially these days), there’s something about a well-produced trailer that really just reminds me why I like video games."

Also the most misleading of all time

SDuck815d ago

How so? Because it focused on a family that you see dying? (innocent question, haven't gotten a chance to play any Dead Island game yet)

aconnellan815d ago

More the tone of it - the tone of the trailer suggested something personal and dramatic, but the game was very much reminiscent of Left 4 Dead in that you were just there to kill zombies and nothing more

Ashby_JC815d ago

You play as a singular character there is no family involved at all in the game. Still a stand out trailer that I remember clearly from years ago.

Fntastic815d ago (Edited 815d ago )

Did you not like the game?

I remember going in expecting a L4D style of game, but the excessive camera swaying honestly made me feel ill, and it's rare for a game to do that to me, still don't understand why the need for anything other than maybe a subtle slight camera movement when doing melee attacks etc. Other than that i didn't really find the game that good. In all honesty i had more enjoyment out of DNF, and i know many people crap on that game.

BioShockGX814d ago

I still remember this misleading controversy

RickRoland815d ago

It’s the music. It’s perfect. I agree with this for sure, it is well choreographed….unfortunately the game didn’t live up to the trailer.

brewin814d ago

Maybe not, but it was still a good game. I liked how they expanded things with Dying Light, but Dead Island was a great first attempt! I really liked all the Easter eggs and homages to other horror franchises sprinkled throughout. Sure it was a little cheesy and over there top, but it was a good happy medium between Far Cry and Fallout with zombies.

I'm gonna heavily disagree with that.

CrimsonWing69815d ago

Have you ever seen any of the MGS 3 or MGS 4 trailers? Those blow this out of the water for me.

TricksterArrow815d ago

They require prior knowledge of the franchise, tho. You show this trailer to anyone, and I mean ANYONE, and they can understand what's going on and relate to the family dynamic almost immediately. No need to know who is Snake, or Fox Hound, or Raiden, or Metal Gear...

Top 10 Xbox 360 Games That Need to be Backward Compatible

Kevin F. from Link Cable Gaming writes: "Many of the best Xbox 360 games are playable on the Xbox One and Series X|S consoles. Some even with some enhanced visuals and performance. Unfortunately, not every game from the Xbox 360 library has received this glorious feat of being able to be played on more modern Microsoft consoles."

Max Payne 3 needs to be on that list.

autobotdan1029d ago

The Spider-man games will never happen. The xbox 360 Marvel Ultimate Alliance games have a better chance of happening than Spider-man titles but won't happen. The Xbox One Ultimate Alliance games delisted years ago

Vits1029d ago

Yeah... you can totally forget about those entries that got delisted because of licensing issues. Those are not happening.

MetalProxy1028d ago

Wait everything isn’t BC? You guys act like it is lol

porkChop1028d ago

Almost all of the games people want to play are BC, and that's a hell of a lot better than having none available.

ApocalypseShadow1028d ago (Edited 1028d ago )

Almost all the games people want to play? Not true. Majority picks screw over the minority who have games collecting dust. Metal is right. Fans make it seem that it's all. 39/997 games from OG Xbox is NOT all. 568/2154 from 360 is NOT all. But you guys play it up like it is.

And from my count, there are 4,000+ PS4 BC games on PS5 that I see. And almost every VR game. Series X has no Kinect games or Kinect 2. But you played that up too. No more dancing.

As for the article, some of the BC games make sense. The others with Spider-Man aren't happening.
