Bach Inadvertently Calling Many Gamers Childish

Loud Mouthed Gamers: Speaking in an interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Patrick Bach Executive Producer of Battlefield 3 has given his opinion on how his game will be more mature than other games out there. "We are trying to do something that is more mature. Mature not being gore –some people confuse the two. That’s childish actually, to want more blood. I think games need to grow up a bit." Does he inadvertently call everyone that produces and plays games such as Gears of War childish?

"Technically when he says “I want games for grown-ups,” hes calling everyone that plays Mature rated games, which are only for those who are 18+, by legal means adults, children. Does that make you angry? Because it makes us annoyed."

That's a sweeping statement if I ever read one. I think the author is really taking a lot of what Bach is saying, too literally. Bach is alluding to the use of blood and voilence just for the sake of it. His comment stems from the announcement that you cannot kill civilians in BF3. That, understandably, could strike at the heart of any maturity BF3 is aiming for because it wouldn't really serve any purpose (unless the game was experltly crafted around collateral damage and the psychological affect it can have on soldies- which is not what BF3 is about).

Like I've said before, using blood and gore can enhance the experience in a game and help it become mature. It's just a matter of how you utilise it.

That's actually a good point, I never would have thought his comments would be a shot against BF3 than any other thing.

Still some of his comments are far from the truth like players will mostly choose to be bad when given a choice?

We choose the path we take in games to see the difference between them not because we want to be evil. Not to mention its added replay value to the games we put our hard earned money to.

I think the real issue at hand here is he seems to think BF3 is going to be a first for real "mature" gameplay. He talks almost as though all other mature games rely on gore. Not to mention "I think games need to grow up a bit" is pretty unfair considering games like deus ex, mass effect, witcher 2, portal, half life, limbo and braid have shown a load of maturity in their storylines whilst the last single player offering DICE gave us was bad company 2. Enough said.

Yes some games rely on gore but only some and at the end of the day what's wrong with a little bit of fun in a game? I don't see what's immature about a game, or movie, that's silly and over the top and fun. No pihrana 3D isn't as mature as citizen kane, but that doesn't mean it has no place in this world.

I think games themselves are right on track. They've exposed me to more interesting ideas, narratives, worlds and ideas than any movie and they come up a close second to books. The only thing I think needs changing is the industry's obsession with milking gamers for every last penny.

Also let's not forget he probably shouldn't be lecturing anyone on maturity considering that Dice has spent the best part of the last year doing nothing but trying to measure the size of their cock against call of duty's. And whilst I applaud battlefield 3 for trying to give us a serious experience the truth is I don't want to be told what to do. If I want to shoot a civilian I want to shoot the God damned civilian.

If I want a controlled experience I'll watch a movie or play call of duty.

When you give players the option to do bad things, of course people will do them, not because they are bad people, but just to see what happens.

On topic: battlefield 3 will have serious tone without it going onto the area of bad taste. People who want mass destruction, also want non-stop chaos in the game (and maybe the choice to kill civilians also?). That's childish. The guys at DICE are trying to give you believability, think of it as a mix between The Hurt Locker and Black Hawk Down.

If Patrick wanted to actually make a mature game he wouldn't be pandering to the war genre itself so he's being just a bit hypocritical.
