Top 10 Video Game Remakes

Ask Men: There’s been a wave of nostalgia in gaming circles as of late, as evidenced by the numerous releases of compilation discs with classic games, right through to authentic, unchanged ports on more modern systems (the PlayStation Network or the Wii Virtual Console are good examples). Part of this new video game fad includes taking older titles, dusting off their memorable gameplay or plot lines, and remaking them for a new generation of gamers to appreciate.

We’ve put together a list of 10 video game remakes that have been rereleased onto newer systems, but here we have to make a distinction -- these aren’t sequels that many mistake for a rerelease or just slapped into a classics collection without any updates. These top 10 video game remakes are pure remakes that don’t deviate from the authentic nature of the original titles, but instead are given a new haircut for today’s modern systems.

I'd put the Resident Evil remake on the GC on that list. The rest are pretty good choices.

Not sure if I'd class Mario Kart Wii as a remake.

Personal preference - but I preferred the original Ninja Gaiden Black and 2 to the sigma series.

Venoxn4g4619d ago

Yes RE: remake (GC) is one of the most awesome remakes EVER.. it's a sin not to include it..

Venoxn4g4619d ago

list needs:

Conker: live & reloaded
Resident evil (gamecube)
Metal gear solid: twin snakes

Tuxedo_Mask4619d ago (Edited 4619d ago )

I'd have to disagree with you on Twin Snakes. Sure, the graphics were improved, but the voice acting wasn't as good and the cut-scenes were too over the top. I wanted to like it better than the original, but it didn't seem to take itself as seriously.

Venoxn4g4618d ago

I liked cut-scenes a lot :) to each his own..

BrightFalls764619d ago

They forgot the Uncharted series, the remake of the Tomb Raider series.

BrightFalls764619d ago

All in good fun, I did love Uncharted 2 and am looking forward to part 3 but overall looking much more forward to the reboot of Tomb Raider.

Tanir4619d ago

yeah.....really, aswell as Ncaa sports games being the remakes of madden games, cod games being remakes of random ww2 shooter, halo being remake of tribes, and little big planet being a mario remake, etc etc right?

newb lol

DlocDaBudSmoka4619d ago

shoulda just made a top nintendo remakes list. thats pretty much what it was.

jacksonmichael4619d ago

Dude, is that Shaggy 2 Dope in your avatar? And yeah, eh? Plus, a lot of them were actually sequels, not remakes.

DlocDaBudSmoka4618d ago

yes that is shaggy 2 dope face paint, but that is actually me made up b4 a concert.

CrescentFang4619d ago

Remakes eh? If anyone played Ys III and compare it to Oath in Felghana (which I think the fans overall consider the best in the series) it's quite amazing how much of a remake it is.
It's also more enjoyable to play Ys III before playing Oath in Felghana.
For remakes (like completely from ground up, make a new game) that's all I can think of atm

The Best Tomb Raider Games Ranked

We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9555d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro54d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot54d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist54d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx55d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188155d ago (Edited 55d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9555d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist54d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp54d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg54d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion54d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.

If they ever did I hope they would add onto it, there's so much you could do with Princess Peach's castle alone

roadkillers70d ago

Or just make the Mario 128... the cancelled sequel that sounded amazing (or was it just an amazing tale).

fr0sty69d ago

Funny that after all these years, we still use 64 bit CPUs, so it wouldn't make sense to call it that.

fr0sty69d ago

Yeah, a straight remake doesn't sound good to me. Same formula, but different game.

Number1TailzFan70d ago

Each level is pretty small today in the original game, I don't like huge levels but I think they could be at least 2x bigger, or close to it and more of them, with more things to do.

They could do a mix of having open levels and more linear ones like in 3D World or Land, I doubt they will do that but it would make a change.

Neonridr70d ago

I mean Odyssey's levels weren't massive, but requiring you to do different things in each world is what made the levels feel bigger than they were.

ZeekQuattro70d ago

I'd prefer a Oydessey 2 or Galaxy 3. Besides the DS
game was a Mario 64 remake complete with more playable characters, stages, bosses and muti player content.

Cacabunga70d ago (Edited 70d ago )

I did not like Odyssey i found the idea of ot lame.. i find it boring to just look for moons instead of exploring and enjoying the levels. Let’s not talk about the extremely repetitive and ridiculously easy bosses. Level design is so meh most of the time. Galaxy 2 is a far better game so Galaxy 3 anytime!!!

TiredGamer69d ago

Agreed. I enjoyed Odyssey for a while, but it quickly became very formulaic where each level felt like a checklist of things to do with WAY too many moons to find. The Galaxy series were the best, as they took some of what made 64 great and juiced it up perfectly.

Lolly70d ago

Yes! Let's release an almost 30 year old game to kick off the next generation for Nintendo...
I'm over re-releases...FEED ME NEW MARIO!
