We Need More Quirky RPGs

It's not often that a funny RPG lands on PC, consoles, or handhelds. When a comical entry in the genre does launch, however, it's usually an interesting and enjoyable take on it. Bright Hub looks at a few quirky titles and explains why sometimes it's cool to have fun with an RPG that doesn't take itself so seriously.

We need more good RPG's first. RPG's are something the industry is very lacking in as a whole, there are so few worth playing even...

And if you guys want to play a good RPG you've probably never played that beats the snot out of all others on the same system, try Crystalis on the NES. Yes, I am saying it even beats Zelda 1, and I don't say that often, give it a try. Best RPG on the NES by far. Try that, now THAT'S a good RPG. They need to make more focused around story.

And another RPG that happens to be a homebrew is Pier Solar, which is pretty good I've heard, check that out too although you can't get on right now. It's for the Genesis and is just wicked with amazing art and sound. I can't wait until I can get it.

I have to agree with you there. There's been a total lack of emphasis on awesome RPGs as of late.

Still, I can't help but have a fondness for comedy RPGs.

I would be happy with just a good RPG. Doesn't have to be quirky!!!

One of the best comedy RPGs was Lunar/Lunar 2. It had a perfect mix of satire and epic story line.

I hope one day, someone will develop a Lunar 3...

I don't know if you know this, but Takeshi Miyaji has passed away about a month ago... very sad...

A recent funny RPG that I loved was 'Costume Quest', I hope it gets a sequel.

I was about to call out the lack of Costume Quest in this article. It was short, but hell, it was pretty damn fun.

Most funny RPG'S are DLC like 'Castle Crashers', 'Costume Quest' and 'Deathspank'. Can't wait for 'The Baconing'

I prefer dark RPGs. Demon souls was the best RPG I've played in the last few years, really built for the hardcore audience. Morrowind was my favourite before that, the first game where exploration and RPG really worked well.

I couldn't care less about storyline, there are some amazing books out there if you want a good story. What both morrowind and dark souls achieved was atmosphere. So many RPG's are lacking that raw atmosphere in a game. RPGs should draw their players in and make them feel part of their surroundings which both of those games achieve.

The traditional JRPG's just don't have the same appeal.

RPG Reload File 009 - 'Cthulhu Saves The World'

TouchArcade: Hello, gentle readers, and welcome to the RPG Reload, the weekly features where we attempt to take over the world by being the best heroes we can be. Each week, we take a look at an RPG from the App Store's past to see how it's doing these days, how it holds up, and how the wife and kids are. All kinds of RPGs are welcome in this feature, and I'll always do my best to mix things up from week to week. To keep my madness in check, however, once a month I throw the selection to you, the readers. Simply leave a comment below or drop into the Official RPG Reload Club thread in the forum to tell me what you'd like to see me play in the next reader's choice column, which will be RPG Reload File 013. Yes, the five Thursdays in October mean you guys have an extra week to vote this time around, so make your voices heard. You can also comment or post about the game I've written about, or RPG things in general. Fresh comedy is also welcome.
