IGN: Infamous 2 Review

Nothing exists in Infamous 2 just because, and that’s something developer Sucker Punch should be commended for. When combined with how well-executed just about everything in the game is, the overall package is one of PlayStation 3’s best and a must-play for fans of the first game. Don’t be deceived by niche subject matter like I was when the original Infamous first came out. This is a rock-solid third-person action game with an incredible story, great characters, meaty gameplay and – above all else – a string that effectively ties everything together.

Well done, Sucker Punch and IGN.

Sucker Punch for creating an amazing sequel.

Well done to IGN for not giving the 50 millionth 8.5 score.

DarkCharizard_4710d ago (Edited 4710d ago )

Crysis 2, The Witcher 2, Total War: Shogun 2, Patapon 3, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy & Pokemon Black/White.

ksense4710d ago

if you want a good score from IGN the game needs to have a good single player campaign and it has to be long. Multiplayer is secondary to them. this is what I have noticed but for some reason COD seems to be the exception.

thugbob4710d ago

This is how you make a sequel!!!!

"Infamous 2 plays nearly identically to how the original played, and that's a good thing."

"Nothing exists in Infamous 2 just because, and that’s something developer Sucker Punch should be commended for."

I wasn't going to get this game on day one, but now I am because developers like Sucker Punch DESERVE it.

If only Killzone 3 was a worthy successor to Killzone 2 like Infamous 2 is for Infamous 1. Hopefully Guerrilla Games learned their lesson.

Infamous 2 another worthy PS3 exclusive.

GrieverSoul4710d ago

Im surprised for the 8.5 on graphics. The game looks great! I know 8.5 ia good score but graphics and physics seem to me a bit over the top to just earn a 8.5.

My 2 cents

MoveTheGlow4710d ago (Edited 4710d ago )

@Ksense - Multiplayer? In Infamous 2? While that sounds okay, with electric/fire/ice dudes jumping everywhere and all, Infamous 2 is a single-player game. So, yeah, I'm looking for reviewers to treat it as a single-player game. The user-generated content stuff is awesome, but that isn't really multiplayer, it's shared creativity.

You're not going to see a restaurant losing a star in a review because there just wasn't enough snowboarding. You didn't see reviewers marking down Final Fantasy 6 because it didn't have Multitap functionality. You're not going to see Infamous treated like Call of Duty. Did you even read the article?

MoveTheGlow4710d ago (Edited 4710d ago )

@GrieverSoul - Yes, definitely, when compared to other PS3 games graphics-wise, it's looking like this one's up in the top tier; of course, that's because Sucker Punch has had time to improve on their past work, on an engine they originally built from the ground up. Colin didn't have anything that would bring the score down, which seems odd, but he said it looks "great," which would typically mean something in the above average range, or the 8's.

I know reviews have seen a ton of grade inflation over the past 10 years or so, with IGN leading that move in the past, but it looks like Colin (not IGN, just this guy, as Clank explains below) is following the actual scoring guidelines at the moment. He might be scoring graphical fidelity overall, compared to any system, including high-end PC's, but I'm not sure that's the case either.

ksense4710d ago

@movetheglow

chill out bro. I was not asking for multiplayer in Infamous. Did you even read my comment? I was talking about IGN reviews in general. Just take an example of Killzone 3. The game got docked points only because it had a weak story. The majority of gamers look at killzone as a multiplayer game so shouldn't the reviewer give it more importance than judging the game just for its single player experience but that is not the case with IGN. Homefront had a decent campaign but it was short and so it got a really low score.

All I am saying is that IGN gives more importance to the single player experience no matter what.

darthv724710d ago (Edited 4710d ago )

it is from "au.ps3.ign.com". Not like that version of IGN carries any weight.

It is usually the US site that gets all the flak. I am betting they will give the usual score.

despair4710d ago

@darthv72

Its the same review for all regions and its done by a US reviewer...

MitchGE4710d ago

Colin Moriarty from IGN (the guy who did this review) must be blind. 8.5/10 for graphics? InFamous 2 is easily a 10/10 for graphics. It's pretty much an open world Uncharted 2 graphically.

RankFTW4710d ago

Can't wait to pick this baby up, sorry Duke you will have to sit in the pile for a few days :).

darthv724710d ago

thank you...i stand corrected.

Some sites that have variations around the globe review things independently of the rest.

Was a bit skeptical there for a moment.

zootang4710d ago

How is it that COD will score a 10 in graphics but infamous 2 gets an 8.5? Seriously?

despair4710d ago

@darthv72

NP...I made that mistake once or twice and there are usually multiple reviews for the different regions on IGN so I know why you were mistake..plus the link is to the AU site..

unicron74710d ago

@GrieverSoul

I know right. 8.5 for graphics??? Watch them give MW3 a 9 or 10 in graphics with absolutely no basis for it whatsoever. This is why reviews are mostly BS, opinion based, and don't have a leg to stand on. I'm buying the game, but definitely not by going off their review. I'll be using my own two eyes.

thereapersson4710d ago

None of those games have anything to do with Infamous: 2, so there was absolutely no point in mentioning them except to stir the pot.

Colmshan19904710d ago (Edited 4710d ago )

@thereapersson

He's just naming other games that IGN gave the same score to.
And there's some pretty fine games in that line up.
He's replying to the first comment, not trolling.

thereapersson4710d ago

Again I ask, why was it necessary? What purpose does it serve?

This article is about Infamous 2, not Crysis 2, The Witcher, etc. If people want to see every other game that got the same score as Infamous 2, they can go to the IGN ratings page and look them up there.

You excusing that sort of off-topic posting is exactly what's contributing to this site's downward slope.

vickers5004710d ago

"You're not going to see a restaurant losing a star in a review because there just wasn't enough snowboarding. You didn't see reviewers marking down Final Fantasy 6 because it didn't have Multitap functionality."

Lol, your metaphors are kind of crappy. A better saying would be "you're not going to see a mexican restaurant losing a star because there wasn't any chinese/american/italian food".

Multiplayer in inFamous wouldn't be as crazy and out of place as you make it sound. Provided the developers wanted their game to have multiplayer or co-op, I'm sure they would do a fantastic job of implementing it into an inFamous game, and it would feel natural.

But inFamous doesn't NEED multiplayer, although I'm very interested in seeing Sucker Punch giving it a shot at some point in the franchise. Given inFamous's universe, they could make it pretty unique and badass. But that's another dream for another day, and inFamous 2 is almost here, so I'll enjoy that.

DarkTower8054710d ago

@thugbob,

"Nothing exists in Infamous 2 just because, and that’s something developer Sucker Punch should be commended for."

So does this mean that the blast shards are used this time around? I loved Infamous, but the shards are a stupid decision imo, and there were sooo many of them. I hope they are worth collecting this time around.

bozebo4710d ago (Edited 4710d ago )

@Zootang

CoD runs at 60 fps (BSP based coridoor shooter type engine). Also, if they were taking into acount it's graphics on the PC it could be boosted up a bit, but 10/10 wouldn't make sense because plenty of games look much better on PC.

Anyway, on topic:
I don't understand how other people don't find infamous repetitive, is it just me? Everying aside from the repetitiveness and the loud footsteps is great though.

clank5434710d ago

No. Thank you Colin Moriarity. Seriously, he is one of the only people over there that I continually trust with his in depth reviews and solid reasoning. While I don't hate IGN as much as some others, some of their reviews over the past couple years have been terrible and brief.

blusoops4710d ago

Yeah totally agree! I'm glad they promoted Collin to editor recently from workin on guides. I feel he has a great understanding on gaming, good reasoning, not biased against Playstation, and is fair. Can't wait to play thus game!

BEYOND!

SIX4710d ago

I've been listening to Colin for a good year now and you are right. It's almost obsessive how much he loves playstation. It's just that 90% of them guys at IGN are big nerds for the console with the big X on it.

grailly4710d ago

I would say that he has an interesting view on games, I woudn't trust him on everything though. He loved homefront and singularity, he's always saying how good they are. also, he hates sonic. He's especially big on settings for games, that's what makes him interested or not.

nskrishna24710d ago

I was kinda wondering why an IGN review was making sense and then I found out that it was written by Moriarity...more power to the man

Why are you congratulating IGN? It's their job to give out the score they deem the game is worthy of, good or bad. You can't just congratulate them for giving out a good score and criticize them for giving out a bad one, that's completely missing the point of product reviews.

frjoethesecond4710d ago

Hence MW2 getting a 9.6 instead of a perfect 10?

Obelisk924710d ago

LOL Yeah, I was actually thinking they would give it another 8.5.

Anyway, is this the first review of the game? God, that's early for IGN standards.

TBM4710d ago

I don't need a review or score to tell me which game(s) im going to like or love. I platinum the first game, and well go after it again for part two.

ps3destroyer4710d ago

How funny it is to watch IGN growing in the eyes of ps3 fanboys after a great score for an exclusive game of their console.

ThanatosDMC4710d ago

I got $55 on it at gamestop... i just need to add a little bit more money on it to pick it up on day one. Does anybody know if there's a midnight release?

50Terabytespersec4710d ago

I am skeptical about this score as IGN is known to be very biased and M$$$$ friendly lol.
But I am sure the guy doing the review must be a new hire??
This looks to be a fantastic game for Sand box lovers ..
Im sure to buy this because it is 2nd gen title from sucker punch!

gunnerforlife4710d ago

thats what IGN should do more, put someone that is a fan of either that Genre or was a fan of the first game, not someone that totally hated the sequel or is not a fan of that genre, which is what they usually do and thats why their reviews r so wonky.

damnyouretall4710d ago (Edited 4710d ago )

its a open world game so i dont expect the graphics to be great. but thats still the best owg graphics to date from what ive seen. i didnt play infamous, im waiting on the free game. this looks like a must buy though. after i beat the first one that is

LostDjinn4710d ago (Edited 4710d ago )

Read the review and then check the scores. Something doesn't add up. Nine is a good score but from what is said to how it scores there's just a bit of difference.
Graphics, sound and gameplay all get a glowing review yet they scores eights?

After all, the author doesn't mention one problem (wonky camera is a stretch).

It's still the same IGN. Make no mistake.

death2smoochie4710d ago

So they should have given the game a 10 then? 10+ for graphics?
Would that make IGN more credible then?

LostDjinn4710d ago (Edited 4710d ago )

I see smoochie.
Way to go with taking things to extremes.
What they need to do is give "valid" examples of what falls short?

You see any of those in this article?
I didn't think so.

Edit: I inserted the word "valid". It'll make a nice change from their usual approach.

HolyOrangeCows4710d ago (Edited 4710d ago )

I'll bet you're critical of people taking it to heart that Castro said their economy doesn't work, too.
"Oh now he's a reliable source? LOLOLOL capitalist fanboys!"

When something that's not in favor of something says something positive about that thing or something NEGATIVE about their thing, it can usually be seen as pretty reliable, because they have nothing to gain.

So quit your obsession with "shifting" opinions of LOT, IGN, etc.

And just because IGN has mostly terrible writers who write feature lists as opposed to critical reviews, doesn't mean that they don't have one that can write a good review.

Pyscho_Mantis4710d ago

look at all these fanboys above me. IGN is trusted its why so many people still look at their reviews and lately they have been getting better and a bit longer too. Its just sometimes there reviews can be utter bullshit and in those times IGN is slated. IGN changed their scale for the person who say Infamous scored better. Thye would either have given it a 9.0 or a 9.5. I kinda like the new IGN. There not as generous as before when they used to 9.0s like it was nobody's business.

Yeah they had a lightning bolt in the shape of a question mark at the end of Infamous 2

They always went off the good ending for Cole so I think for Delsin it should be the bad ending

What he did in the bad ending, absorbing everyone’s powers, seemed like he was going to turn into something powerful.

Makes you feel like he could have been the real Beast and John was just an anomaly because of them messing with time

Sets up a Cole vs Delsin showdown

How would fans feel about a reboot? You know to bring a new audience in? Not a good idea? Good idea?

anast329d ago

Not a god idea. They let it sit for too long and the game hasn't been strong enough to carry itself all these years. There is so much other stuff out there right now.

masterfox330d ago

Second Son was released in 2014 was an amazing game visually and gameplay wise, sometimes I play it again on the PS5 and seeing it run at 60 fps is something to behold(yes an almost 10 year old game), if you haven't done that on your PS5 try it you won't be disappointed, pure eye candy, a PS5 exclusive of Infamous would be amazing no doubt.

Older PlayStation games that we'd love to see on the PlayStation 5

From Xfire: "For a company with a three-decade-long history in gaming, Sony has done a crappy job at preserving its legacy. "

All the mgs games, all the ape escapes, silent hill 1-4, croc 1 and 2, legend of dragoon, tekken 3,tenshu, bushido blade, vagrant story, okami, ico, crash bash, gt4.

Thats just off the top of my head that i would play immediately, still so many more though that id love.

If the PC can emulate the PS3, then for sure the PS5 would be able to do same. but dose Sony want it?

Mr Logic1383d ago

If there was money in it, then Sony would do it. People can bitch and moan all they want, but even if every person on this site used BC, that would still be a tiny fraction of gamers. Almost nobody really uses BC.

DethWish1383d ago (Edited 1383d ago )

I think there would be money if they made PS3 games downloadable through PSNow and added a bunch more.
Edit: I would get it if MGS4 was available

Mr Logic1383d ago

@DethWish

That would be an emulator. You're not making any sense.

DethWish1383d ago

Mr Logic, really? If PS5 could emulate PS3 games (BC) and PSNow would let you download and play PS3 games locally instead of streaming (like it lets you download PS4 games), wouldn't that be awesome? PSNow has some really interesting PS3 games, but I'd prefer to play them locally

MadLad1383d ago

Remasters of popular games do extremely well. MS basically hands them out for free. If people didn't want to play older games, then why do remasters sell so well?

anonymousfan1383d ago

I honestly would probably never ever use it... But I still think it would be pretty neat. Its one of the few avantages PC still has on console that is complete backwards compatibility. But for all the work needed to implement this I doubt it would be worth Sony's time.

Melankolis1383d ago

In my opinion.
The difference is independent emulator developer can build any emulator as an experiment that will be perfected for years, maybe more than 10 years. During that time, expect many glitch, bugs, and updates. They can do that because they do not have any obligation towards PC users or whatsoever.

Fos Sony, once they announce PS5 will be able to play PS3 games, they have to make it safe and playable for users. They do not want the emulator cause bricks, glitch, heating up or anything to the consoles and get sued for that.

Harkins17211383d ago

The amount of work it would require sony for each game probably isn't worth it. Maybe after rpcs3 is done they can patent it and use it. That's the dream lol
