Why First Person (Shooters) Are Popular

Gamertag Radio writes: "Quite frankly, without First Person Shooters, I wouldn’t be where I am with my Gaming history. Yes, Super Mario Bros. was an amazing experience in the NES days, and yes, all the brawlers from Konami were really cool, Zelda, Metroid, Sonic, all are great games, but something really changed to a lot of people, including myself when Wolfenstein3D, the original Doom and all over in 1996 when Duke Nukem3D came into the scene. My mind was blown away by the visuals, cool enemies and weapons, all the way to the great level design."

Cuz its easy. Pick and play. There "is" a learning curve, but not as challenging as a fighter or action rpg for instance.

thorstein4745d ago

I love the 1st Person Shooter but the 2nd Person Shooters are more fun.

warrior99884745d ago (Edited 4745d ago )

3rd person you mean ?? i never heard of a 2nd person O_o

Kon4745d ago

I was thinking about this the other day... Why not 2nd person shooters?

omi25p4745d ago

a second person shooting game is where you are the person you are shooting at. i think that kind of makes sense...

Blad3star4745d ago (Edited 4745d ago )

4th Person Shooter would be nice

You are controlling a person in the video game who is also controlling another person with in the video game.

X--->Y--->Z

X controls Y's fire power and combat moves and Y is in charge of protecting Z.

Z is the vision, stealth, speed and recon of the team but is defenseless and relies on Y for protection.

X is the main life line for the team but can revive Y and Y can not protect X.

First person shooters are the most immersive type of game. And they also tend to look graphically more advanced than any other type of game. Those two things are what draw people in. And people love guns and blowing things up.

captain-obvious4744d ago (Edited 4744d ago )

a 2nd person shooter is when the cam is fixed to one angle
like the classic RE games and GOW

(i think)

thorstein4744d ago

A 2nd Person Shooter is where the Player is the main character (like in an RPG). Other characters use pronouns like "You."

A 1st Person Shooter is where the player controls a character who is referred to by his or her name like in Duke Nukem, Uncharted, Halo.

lizard812884744d ago

I thought 2nd person shooters were top down shooters, via fixed camera angle.

I think it has to do with people's lives being more busier and quicker than ever. I started out gaming as a kid when I had all the time in the world. Now I'm in college and have a job and can barely get any play time in. I don't have time for RPGs and long ass games that don't end or take time before getting any good gameplay parts in. I could say it's the same reason mobile games/apps are booming the way they are now with games like Angry birds etc. They are quick games to fit people's busy lifestyles without dedicated too much time out of their life to play.

Shooters are quick gateways to fast gaming by jumping straight online into the action for some quick 10-15 minute fun. Maybe longer...if you're BADASS! lol

But seriously I know for me personally, I just don't have the time for many other genres that I used to play. Specifically RPGs. I kid you not when I tell you I am STILL on the intro train part of Final Fantasy 13 since it's North American release -_-

Easy...it's been the nature of man for thousands of years...Kill each other. It sounds terrible, but what better way to do that than to do so with no negative consequences. I suppose it also has alot to do with the competitive nature, but what it all boils down to is.....killing each other, for fun...which is fun

HobbsCanuck4745d ago

go to youtube and add /watch?v=FhHK1ltJJg4&NR=1 to the url. N4G thinks im spamming -.-

But i think this is why FPS games are popular

KrimsonKody4744d ago

Well,
I remember reading articles discussing whether or not 1st person shooters are used to train youths to use guns & learn the basic fundementals of war (stealth, tactics, gun types, etc.)...

gypsygib4744d ago

It's because the view in the game is the view you have in real life.

captain-obvious4744d ago

not really

unless you have an eye that extend in front of you for a meeter or so

Pretty sure Silk Song and Dragon Age are going smoothly. The other 2 can be assumed to be quietly cancelled knowing their publishers and Metroid will most likely be shown off this year.

Michiel198995d ago

Dragon Age going smoothly??? Directors leaving, people leaving in general, terrible working conditions....not sure how you define smoothly.

Chocoburger96d ago

I remember in 2017 when Nintendo showed off the Metroid Prime 4 logo, and some Nintendo defenders claimed "Just because they only showed a logo, doesn't mean that's all they've worked on for the game."

As history has proven, they were wrong. Nintendo showed off a logo back in 2017 because that's literally all they had.

-Foxtrot95d ago

I think Beyond Good and Evil 2 can stay there unless they are going to just rename it to a new IP

DOMination-95d ago

Pretty sure BG&E2 is dead at this point - along with the other game Ancel was working on before he left - I think it was called WILD. Anyone remember that from a PS conference years ago?

Dreadwolf isn't in development hell anymore and is finally getting its reveal in the summer - since 2016 the game has been scrapped and restarted three times but its been going pretty well since the last reboot when EA finally allowed BioWare to just get on with making a single player game.

I'm not sure Perfect Dark is in development hell either - like it could be but we haven't really heard much to suggest either way - imo they just showed the trailer off when the game was still in pre-production. Xbox were desperate for anything and this is all they had at the time. And the reason we haven't heard anything since is just because it's in normal development and games take 5 years to make. The help from a support studio was typically overblown on N4G because nearly every game has this.
