iPad 2 displays 3D – Glasses Free

Apple will soon own 3D portable gaming. Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay from the Laboratory of Informatics of Grenoble have developed a method to track a users point of view using the iPad 2′s FaceTime camera. 3DS can only show 3D from a single focal point.

I think this is only considered to be head tracking and not actual 3D. But I might be wrong. If I am please be nice and correct me.

That is called Head tracking, the Kinect can also do this trick as well. Same goes for the Wii.

Simply put, anything with some processing power and a camera. It's a pretty old trick now, hopefully someone makes use of it rather than the old target tech demo.

Correct me if I am wrong, but won't the 3D effect stop if you stopped moving your head? I mean won't it look just like a normal 3D pic on 2D plane if you didn't move your head?

I haven't played 3DS myself, but I am pretty sure that the 3D one could pull up on the 3DS is substantially different than this and that doesn't include straining your neck continuously to get 3D effect by moving your head.

But it does seem pretty cool.

3DS 3D is just a gimmick, painfull for the brain and eyes, no need to "crush' it (3D with glasses is way more efficient and spectacular, on a big screen)

Hell, the pseye can head track. Basically any camera with some software can. The iPad will still have the best non-glasses 3d for now.

Also, this isn't technically "glasses-free 3d", there is no actual depth, it's still a flat image. And as i recall the DSi did the same thing but that didn't mean we got tons of great games utilizing it.

Bingo! This is NOT the same 3D as the 3DS! This is 'monocular' 3D that allows for 3D "perspective". Still a 2D display. The DSi has already done this (Looksley's Line-Up).

To do what the 3DS is doing would require HARDWARE changes. iPad 3 at the earliest.

That said, this IS still cool. Just not 'Nintendo crushing' in any way.

Real Racing 2 HD.... One of the best game I have played on a portable device... It's the Gran Turismo equivalent SIM for the iOS devices and it's probably the best racing game on the Appstore.... Could use this tech to track your head and adjust camera.... Other than that I am pretty sure the developers will find something cool to implement it.

There's alot of good games on the appstore. Sorry but I don't hold to the notion that portable gaming is best on NGP or 3DS. The iPad especially iPad2 is a very very capable gaming unit. Plus that 10+ hour battery life helps alot.

accept you lose it when you start putting your fingers all over the screen which is why on the 3ds only one screen is 3d

pretty lame, i was expecting some new kind of tech from apple, but nope, it was a let down. i got something thats years old just coming to an apple device, perhaps my expectations of apple are too high.
