Sony and PlayStation.com Brought Down By Anon Attack, More to Follow

After claiming that Sony’s lawsuit against George Hotz et al was an attack on free speech, hacking collective Anonymous declared war on Sony. Hoping to seek revenge on the company, Anonymous warned that Sony would soon suffer for their actions. Now, Sony.com and PlayStation.com has fallen to the hackers, with more sites promised to follow.

Oh shit, they actually where serious.

zootang4760d ago (Edited 4760d ago )

Sony is a Public company so by doing this they are causing millions of people to lose money. Not a good way to promote themselves.

It's also incredibly funny they rant about free speech but they themselves are annonymous? I want all their details, including credit and debit cards, freedom of information!

Heartnet4760d ago

Well atleast no1 knows the customer service number of sony now :D thatll save em some money :)

Acquiescence4760d ago

hackers are scumbags. No bullshit justification this time - they're really showing their true colours now.

"It's also incredibly funny they rant about free speech but they themselves are annonymous?"

Free speech is unrelated to privacy. In fact, free speech means you can say non-slanderous "things" without being persecuted so why would you need their information?

ftwrthtx4760d ago

Can someone explain to me how this hurts Sony? I mean, really. It makes no sense.

alien6264760d ago

and i thought hackers where smart but i guess not

@gamingdroid

""It's also incredibly funny they rant about free speech but they themselves are annonymous?"

Free speech is unrelated to privacy. In fact, free speech means you can say "things" without being persecuted so why would you need their information?"

Um, gamingdroid, apply that EXACT comment you made to the hackers themselves. WTF has free speech got to do with being able to hack someone else's software?? Software that is the legal property of Sony, the owner. Hacking into that Sony owned software, distributing the know-how about, is a crime. Free speech has absolutely nothing to do with it one bit

gamingdroid4760d ago (Edited 4760d ago )

My comment was completely neutral and factual. It applies to all parties, so I'm not sure what you are trying say here....

Perhaps you are a little bit too involved in the matter that really doesn't pertain much to you.

edit:

With that said, I don't condone Anonymous action, but warned that you don't want to draw the ire of the public.

Other than n4g.com, most other sites are much more against the actions of Sony and believe in the ability to study DRM and disseminate such information. I certainly believe it would be for the greater good, but the corporations had DMCA enacted in the US.

TrashyNewz4760d ago

WELLSAID ZOOTANG "KUDOS" they are messing us all up i cant access the thing i need too and the FBI is going to get involve soon i guarentee it.

GrieverSoul4760d ago (Edited 4760d ago )

Hackers are skilled computer geniuses that lack social skills to exist in a normal work environment so they attack from the shadows and make stupid text with poems and rhymes about their motives.

Geohot just wanted a job from Steve Jobs himself, then he went to motorola hacking, then Sony but they never gave him an opportunity because he thinks he is way above everybody else. These guys wont get nowhere with this except being labeled as simple pirates that try to get users personal information. They are common thiefs and thats all.

If you hackers want to hurt SONY, please, develop a better interface for the PS3. make your own firmware without tweaking Sony official one. Stop wasting time of petty attacks on their websites.

EDIT: I can open the webpags normally.. no issues... o_O

Ares844760d ago

People with this free speach bullshit.

Yes you have free speach but what these hackers did is not because of free speach.

By stealing the code from Sony and than distributing it on the net is not free speach. It's called stealing.

If you think this is free speach than you must be ok with me braking into your house and stealing your SS# and than puting it online.

Or if you have a secret sauce recepie that made your restaurant to be famous and successful and I steal the recepie and distribute it online.

In every business there are secrets that must be protect so that the business can be successful. If those secrets come out than anyone with a half a brain can re-create the exact same thing and than what?

What hackers did to Sony was stealing and there is no sugar-coating that. If Sony was out there to stop people speaking ill of the company THAN I would support such actions but what Sony is doing is protecting their property.

Hakcers, you are costing Sony money and you are fucking up our hobbie. Just stop and go and die in a hole somewhere. The world would be a better place. Thank you and fuck you all!

What a bunch of complete morons.
Sony doesn't really make money on those two websites, they are informational websites for users and customers, so they harm people more than Sony.
US sites work well, European are down, while it's SCEA who sued those "freedom fighters".

It's official now: They're so dumb it hurts.

To anyone who calls Anon hackers: You need 2 piece of software which are available in public to perform untrace'able DDoS attack. Monkey could do that.

NewMonday4760d ago

They think they are helping geohot, but if this gets linked to him he will be facing criminal charges, not just a civil case. I bet this will be an issue in his next hearing.

Their revenage attack didn't even put a dent on Sony's sites. That is just sad.

Sony: "Was that suppose to be an attack?"

NiKK_4194760d ago (Edited 4760d ago )

i'm not sure what to believe, because sony said that it went down because of sporadic maintenance, and it went down before anon "promised" that they were gonna get revenge, because it went down in europe sometime yesterday, but it also was down for me yesterday afternoon (i'm in the US). so i'm not sure if anon is just trying to take the credit for it, because i haven't heard anything about them doing anything until AFTER psn went down, but it wasn't down very long either, so i kinda think it may have just been maintenance, plus the fact that it started in europe and then went to the US...i don't see how that DOESN'T sound like sporadic maintenance like sony said

devilmaycry20204760d ago

The problem is not home brew or pirated games, that's another problem.
The real harm is they distributed the security code for the system. in the worst case scenario is accessing your information, your credit card your address.

MmaFan-Qc4760d ago

both websites work flawlessly, took me less than 2 seconds to open both pages in the same time.

gamingdroid4760d ago

"The problem is not home brew or pirated games, that's another problem.
The real harm is they distributed the security code for the system. in the worst case scenario is accessing your information, your credit card your address."

Your information is already public, such as your address. You can find it down at the county. Your credit card information shouldn't be available merely because somebody has the source code that in itself is an insecure system.

If you know anything about security, security through obscurity doesn't work.

Publishing flaws in software (after it has been patched) to educate the public actually does more good to society by educating and allowing others to implement safety measures.

Knowledge is power and provides a greater good. That is why we have a patent system to encourage information sharing.

HolyOrangeCows4760d ago (Edited 4760d ago )

Oh no! Is Sony trying to steal your right to distribute their codes and software? You poor thing, your "freedom of speech" under attack....

Scientology protests are lucky to be 10 people strong these days. Anonymous DOES forget. I guess fighting corporations from protecting their bottom line is more important than fighting brainwashing organizations now, Anon?

herukuti4760d ago

public companies are more insidious than government firms; im sure you werent implying there is a safety zone from wickedness in the public sector.

ps3destroyer4760d ago

That's what happens when you try to get in jail the modern Robin Hood(Geohot). In a world where economic crisis striked almost all the countries and company's like Sony , Microsoft and Nintendo charge 70 usd for a single game what do they expect?People don't have the mnoney money they used to back in the days.If all of you n4g driven ps3 fanboys have millions to buy 30 games a month sorry some people don't.And the use piracy because they want to game like everyone else.Because God didn;t gave them the money doesn't mean that they don't have the right.

krauler4760d ago

Freedom of speech in the U.S. constitution only protects the speaker from the government. It will not protect you from individuals or companies. Therefore, the "freedom of speech" argument has NOTHING to do with Sony or the scum buckets targeting them.

WhittO4760d ago (Edited 4760d ago )

This is really childish and if you hae any respect for them it should be gone.

They are doing it just for the sake of it and to "defend" a fellow hacker that was owned, legally and rightfully.

D*ckheads.

Edit: I can't login to friends list but I can go to the blog home page.

I doubt they can do anything to harm the PSN itself and effect sign ins there? If so thats bad!!

"I think gamingdroid is the only reasonable poster here. The rest of you bow down and kiss Sony's ring all too often and easily. You're not bees. You don't need to protect the queen."

I suppose he's the only rational one because you agree with his opinions right? Being rational doesn't make someone right. There are more equally rational arguments in this thread on the contrary to his comment.

I read his comments yesterday warning us of pissing off hackers. But he sees these hackers as "the public". These people are not supported by the average gamer, they do not represent us. They represent their own sense of justice.

Like many other here I agree with many of the actions they have taken in the past, but this isn't hurting Sony, it's hurting us. This proves to me that they are not apart of us because you don't stub your toe to spite your finger. They're attacking Sony because they're not gamers. If they were gamers they'd be pissed that the PSN was down, like everyone else was.

Now please tell me how I'm being irrational or kissing the ring of Sony?

Electroshocked4760d ago

Ruining the experience for gamers further? F**king douche bags, I hope they all get stabbed, this is just showing how incredibly selfish they all really are.

This isn't true, it's because of these people gaming started up in the first place. Massive corporations didn't take any notice until the cash started to roll in. You're part of a misguided generation who believe nothing can possibly happen without a lot of money.

NCAzrael4760d ago

All this proves is that 4chan is bored and is full of 13 year olds with some basic computer know-how and too much free time. That and a penchant for ruining a great comic book by trying to rip off it's idea of the power of the people with their incessant usage of Guy Fawks masks.

If Anon wants to be mad at someone for abusing the justice system, why not go after the RIAA for suing little old ladies and 10 year old children for allegedly downloading music? If they want to get angry at big corporations for being greedy why not go after the countless corporations who received government bailouts a few years back only to turn around and give huge bonus payouts to all of their executives? Why not actually do something that has some goddamn merit instead of going after a company who is rightfully trying to protect their intellectual property against a couple of douche bags who illegally disseminated private information, allowing countless other people to use that information in even more nefarious ways?

Anon are cowards, pure and simple. "We are legion. Fear us." Blah blah blah. Maybe one day Anon will actually stand for something worthwhile. Until then, all I can say to them is grow the hell up or go away.

HaVoK3084760d ago

You fools keep making such ignorant comments. Sony needs to back off its bullying practices. Do I like hacking? Absolutely not...I hate everything about it and support no hacks. Not even the so-called harmless ones. I do however have commonsense and I know that all Sony is doing if giving these Hackers a "Cause". They are doing nothing but giving them something to rally around. The fools here and N4G actually think Sony can stop them. History proves they can not. Nobody can. Its not like this is something new and nothing...nothing is hack proof.

Sony should utilize their new relationship with Valve. They could learn a lot about piracy, hacking, and how to treat their customers.

Its not going away. No matter how many times people here deem Hackers as losers or tell them they need to die. News flash! Hackers do not give a shit what you think and the more you become enraged the more pleasure they take in their work.

People like to put out opinions as absolute truths all the time only to be proved wrong and made out to be a fool 24 hours later.

Heartnet4760d ago

@Havok if hackers didnt care what people thought then why wud they post what they have accomplished on their blogs and what not...

If hackers had any "commonsense" they would take satisfaction in what they have done and keep it to themselves :) not go around attacking peoples websites and what not..

Focker4204760d ago

@HaVoK308

So that gives hackers the right to bully and screw over all of the people that like and want to use Sony's products/services??

Theres a better way to do things than maliciously trying to ruin Sony. Sue them if they don't like it. They claim 'free speech' and all that junk, well take it to the courts instead. Don't just hide behind a computer screen claiming you're trying to help everyone, because in all actuality you're screwing over a ton of people that have no part in this whatsoever.

sony wont likly give in anymore then a country would

evrfighter4760d ago

who are they terrorizing?

corporations? If that's how it is then Sony are also terrorists.

jerethdagryphon4760d ago

The term "terrorism" comes from French terrorisme, from Latin: 'terror', "great fear", "dread", related to the Latin verb terrere, "to frighten". The terror cimbricus was a panic and state of emergency in Rome in response to the approach of warriors of the Cimbri tribe in 105BC. The French National Convention declared in September 1793 that "terror is the order of the day". The period 1793–94 is referred to as La Terreur (Reign of Terror). Maximilien Robespierre, a leader in the French revolution proclaimed in 1794 that "Terror is nothing other than justice, prompt, severe, inflexible."[9]

fear dread un provoked random or malicious attacks with no care as to colateral targets.

saddly that fits the generally assumed definition of terrorism

as to who sony there employyees and there facilitys in this case websites.

they warned then attacked with a further warning that attacks would continue

that is no different then other terroist attacks.

DOS attacks are the easiest to do really, so they just did that. Won't be long before the sites are back though and they have to think of something else.

gamingdroid4760d ago (Edited 4760d ago )

One should say the most effective as DOS is very easy to do and very cheap to do from a resource stand point not to mention that resources is essentially unlimited as well.

The fix is to block the IP address of the offenders. Sony will be up and running in a few hours or half a day as they analyze the date.

The major problem now is damage control as this will be picked up by the news and information about the lawsuits/hacks/piracy and etc will be spread even more.

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long11d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic11d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91311d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer11d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91310d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit10d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6910d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit10d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher11d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken11d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197211d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic11d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2311d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218311d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder11d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.

Sony May Soon Let You Decide How Much NPCs Talk In Games

Sony has patented to add multiple dialogue modes to let players switch between how many conversations with NPCs they want in the game.

blackblades17d ago

Sony is like the only ones outta the 3 that has atuff like like this pop up changing thing in ways.

just_looken17d ago

Sony in the past has always been first at bat with new ideas/tech but in the end never fully use it or just toss it away.

blackblades17d ago

I think they did use some but yeah most usually never happened but at least they thought about it. Sony seeks things like this and other, Nintendo seek different ways of playing going by there different controler designs and console designs.

Big victory for Sony. And a long time coming.

DarXyde19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Crazy to think the savings from this lawsuit allows them to develop one AAA game.

Make it Bloodborne 2, please and thank you.

Profchaos19d ago

Sounds like patent trolling they tried the same thing against Nintendo with the same pattern.

Motion and control input traversing over higher and lower frequencies seperate from each other allowing the controller to do both

Pyrofire9519d ago

Patents suck. Most of them are complete garbage.

Knightofelemia19d ago

So to recoup the money Genuine is going to take on Nintendo or Microsoft next. I hate patent lawyers they are some of the worst bottom feeders out there.
