After claiming that Sony’s lawsuit against George Hotz et al was an attack on free speech, hacking collective Anonymous declared war on Sony. Hoping to seek revenge on the company, Anonymous warned that Sony would soon suffer for their actions. Now, Sony.com and PlayStation.com has fallen to the hackers, with more sites promised to follow.

Your information is already public, such as your address. You can find it down at the county. Your credit card information shouldn't be available merely because somebody has the source code that in itself is an insecure system.

If you know anything about security, security through obscurity doesn't work.

Publishing flaws in software (after it has been patched) to educate the public actually does more good to society by educating and allowing others to implement safety measures.

Knowledge is power and provides a greater good. That is why we have a patent system to encourage information sharing.

DOS attacks are the easiest to do really, so they just did that. Won't be long before the sites are back though and they have to think of something else.

One should say the most effective as DOS is very easy to do and very cheap to do from a resource stand point not to mention that resources is essentially unlimited as well.

The fix is to block the IP address of the offenders. Sony will be up and running in a few hours or half a day as they analyze the date.

The major problem now is damage control as this will be picked up by the news and information about the lawsuits/hacks/piracy and etc will be spread even more.

It's a denial of service (DOS) attack.

They just use a network of computers they've already installed trojans etc. on, and get them all to simultaneously connect to the website they want to attack.

That website gets so many requests it can't cope and either crashes or just run really really slowly.

And because the attack comes from previously hacked machines the attack can't be easily traced to the people doing the attack.

I have been reading this comment thread along with several others in the links and that rational people are all correct, this hurts much more than Sony. My favorite comments come from those who claim to be part of the hacker community... the sense of invincibility and power they have is amusing. I have no doubt that they are capabe of doing lots of damage. However they do not seem to or do not want to grasp the vast amount of people hurt by their actions. If anything, we as gamers have the least to worry about. All we lost was time gaming and the investment of some of our funds.

But say they really do manage to knock the playstation offline for weeks or wreak havoc on Sony's servers. Sony's stocks go down along with revenue, not exactly something the country of Japan needs in the current state. Nor do stockholders in these economic times.

But there is much more beyond Sony, Japan, and stockholders. Again, under the assumption that these hackers do as much damage as they are claiming they will, you are going to see developers hurt. If PS3 and hardware sells suffer that hurts retailers. I could make the list go on and on if I wanted but I think my points clear.

And that leads to my final point, the idiotic notion of invincibility they have. Sure they may have the upper hand now, but eventually they will cross just the right line. Does the industry, even Microsoft who would benefit from a wounded Sony, really want to set a precedence that hackers may work their will upon the industry as they see fit. Do EA and Activision want to see their sales fall?

What these morons don't realize is that they are messing with some seriously powerful organizations with some deep pockets. Sony may be scrambling right now, but sooner or later, they along with the rest of the industry will make their move.

Federal agents are always a nice thing to see on your doorstep. But that will happen no matter what. You think the big-wigs at Sony haven't written plenty of checks to reelection efforts... a rather small favor to ask for the fast track.

But if I was one of the major industry insiders at Sony or anywhere else, I would be seriously considering alternative measures. There are plenty of talented hackers who are simply mercenaries. And there are more ways than just the law to hit someone.
