Racism isn't always obvious. From time to time, a number of blatantly racist video games are released, and everyone goes apeshit. There are rare situations, however, when the racism isn't as obvious. These are the situations in which thoughtless stereotypes are used, or when games touch upon inflammatory topics. You'd be surprised by the sheer amount of unintentional or hidden examples of racial insensitivity found in what are believed to be the most family-friendly titles.

Hypothetically, if people in some obscure village in China thought an acceptable way to refer to black people was ni**er because they listened to a lot of 90s rap, then came to America and started saying "hey ni**a, where's the McDonalds?" they would have made a racist comment unintentionally irrespective of being racist".

Moreover, maybe from viewing a bunch of Western media they thought all black people were criminals, or all Mexicans were illegals, or everyone white guy from Texas was a dumb cowboy hick, ect. they would have incorrect racist beliefs, unintentionally.

black people in video games are usually- dancers, dj's, boxers or 'gangstas.' they are reduced to characters, flat, 2d characters with no depth.

white characters in games are more fairly represented. think of max payne... great emotional depth to his character..

that is what makes the games industry so racist, even without all those stereotypes, minorities are so under represented.

Alyx Vance(HL2), Zasalamel(SC3), Sgt. Johnson(Halo), Garcian Smith(Killer 7), Sgt Foley(MW2), Coltrane Crowley(Mark Echo), Eli Vance(HL2).

That's just naming a small amount that's either lead role, positive role, or even both.

This article should have been titled "One Website that is entirely too sensitive when it comes to what is in video games."

With the exception of the Scribblenauts example, which is explained by the developer in a reference in the article as a misunderstanding, all of these examples are weak. Also, I had no idea that American was a race, but the site seemed to get a kick out of games making fun of them, how hypocritical.

While video games are lacking in presenting heroes of various races and that is something that could use a change, people need to understand that different cultures view things differently. The message that the original design of Jynx sent to Japanese gamers was completely different to the message that some Western gamers saw.

Seriously, the people that go looking so deep into films/books/games/adverts etc to find racism are freaking racist, it's impossible see racism unless you are racist yourself.
