3D means headaches to many, yet companies push on

NEW YORK, N.Y. - From Hollywood studios to Japanese TV makers, powerful business interests are betting 3-D will be the future of entertainment, despite a major drawback: It makes millions of people uncomfortable or sick.

Optometrists say as many as one in four viewers have problems watching 3-D movies and TV, either because 3-D causes tiresome eyestrain or because the viewer has problems perceiving depth in real life. In the worst cases, 3-D makes people queasy, leaves them dizzy or gives them headaches.

Researchers have begun developing more lifelike 3-D displays that might address the problems, but they're years or even decades from being available to the masses.

I have never seen 3D, because i wear glasses and i don't plan to fuck up my eye site even more

laser eye surgery is for.

With the push for 3d we should see an equal marketing push from the pain relieving drug mfgs.

In addition to excedrin pm and excedrin migrane we will get excedrin 3d.

Pozzle4836d ago

Do you know how much laser eye surgery costs? Shit's damn expensive :/

Genesis54836d ago

Well then I would suggest that these people don't watch 3D. I know my eye gets sore when I stick a pointy stick in it. So I stopped doing that.

As for watching 3D myself. I like the immersion that it adds and it causes me no distress.

My eyes can't process 3D either, not that I've heard it's that great anyway.

EDIT: I normally pay no attention to disagrees but apparently I can see 3D and I've heard that it is great. Haha. :p

It may be argued that people dont see in 3d but we do. With both eyes we get the ability of depth which is what the 3rd dimension relates to. We see height/length, width and depth.

There is no magical 3d anything because it is around us all the time. Each eye receives information at different rates but at our own individual pace. Not something that is fed to us at a particular refresh rate.

The term "3D" became a focus back in the 50's i think when it was given to the perception of taking something that was flat and making it appear to have depth. 3D movies back then was the delivery medium. Very un natural but still the effect was impressive for its time.

Unless you only have one working eye, everyone can see 3d and their brain processes the information from each eye to complete the picture. The result in headaches and/or eye strain is caused by the sustained frame rate being fed at a pace that some may not be able to process. That is why some get them and some dont.

Meh, I'm sure we will adjust. Anyone remember their first time playing Mario 64... Or Super Mario Galaxy? I can play those fine now, but the first time I played both of them, I almost puked.

zootang4836d ago

Going back to SD from HD gives me a headache. I think it's just your eyes getting used to it.

iamnsuperman4836d ago

I am one of these people who after a while gets headaches but (in the UK) it is around 15% get headaches from 3D and 25% in america who have experienced it (i.e. no all the time) http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21... Small percentage get affect but still at least 75% are not affected

title fix
"3D means money for tv companies and a marketing scheme for other, yet we still fall for it"

Bozzio4836d ago

Agreed. They're just running out of ideas for gimmicks

nycredude4836d ago (Edited 4836d ago )

It may be a gimmick for you but it isn't for me. you guys think they should ignore the 75 to 80 percent of people who DON'T get headaches just because of the 20 to 25 percent of people who do get it? I hope you guys aren't in business cause you would fail.

How many people in the US do you think can afford a Lamborghini? how many do you think can afford a corolla? Which do you think sell more? Why do they still sell lamborghinis?

Point is if there is a demand for something someone will fill the void. And don't kid yourself there is a demand for 3d. it may not be a huge amount yet but VHS, CD, DVD, Bluray all had to start somewhere..

Also you guys shouldn't be so against it. No one is forcing you to buy or use it. In fact it is because of all this new tech that regular hdtvs that used to cost 2000 are available for 500 to 1000 dollars. So just STFU and be happy.

We don't want another RTX 4080, but this lesser-known brand is releasing one anyway

Even though the Super is out, this Chinese brand is releasing a base RTX 4080 - and it comes with AIO liquid cooling and a striking design.

It was worrisome to begin with.

It's a niche genre with only a handful of hits that can stand the test of time.

Cacabunga15h ago

I like the sound of that!! I will for sure never support these gaas games.
Sony must be shocked at gamer's reaction, making them cancel a few of these and hopefully go back to the good heavy hitters they had us used to..
now bring on that PSPro reveal and show us some SP 1st party awesomeness.

CrimsonWing691d 11h ago

What’s to be unsure of!? Look at the ratio of success to failure!

DarXyde18h ago

It's pretty ridiculous.

Imagine having a breadth of data at your disposal to see the statistically low success rate of these games, only to be laser focused on the exceptional case studies.

shinoff21831d 10h ago

Yes. Stop all the live service bs.

jznrpg1d 10h ago

Only a few will catch on. You need a perfect storm to be successful in GaaS and a bit of luck on top of that. But a potential cash cow will keep them trying and some will go out of business because of it.

Helldivers 2 manages just fine…

Keep production costs low… don’t just make custscenes until the mechanics and enemies are perfected first.

Make so much content that you can drip extra content for years, and the game already feels complete without them.

Most importantly: make weapons, enemies, levels, and mechanics that will stand the test of 1000 hours. This might require more devs embracing procedurally generated leveled, which I think separates Helldivers 2 from Destiny’s repetitiveness.
