In b4 the storm!!! Like what people have said before, the hype got the best of people. This would have been scored high if people's expectations for it weren't through the roof. Nevertheless 8.5 is not at all bad, in my book that's a damn good score. It's about time they released it, if it went on for any longer I'm sure people would have just been more disappointed.

WHOOO it's getting hot in here. 250 degrees in 10 minutes! 7.0 on Presentation isn't surprising to me, one look at the main menu and I was shocked at what a clusterfuck it was. Compare that to the streamline and simple menu system in GRID and I can easily see why it got what it got in that category. Loading times are bad as well, but then again it has load a crap load of stuff just for a single race.

The Fight has taught me one thing. Don't trust the reviewers. Most of them are weak, nitpicky, and pretty much unprofessional.

And since I did prefer GT5P over Forza 3(which is also really good game), I'm quite optimistic here.

How better gaming community if people calling themself gamers would actually play games, not pledge allegiance to brands.
If you're a fighting games fan, you enjoy Street Fighter, Tekken, KoF, Guilty Gear or BlazBlue.
If you're puzzle games fan, you play most of them.
If you're an RPG fan, you want to play most of them, at least the best ones.
There's really more sh!t in journalism since MS entered the business. There always have been fanboy wars, but it wasn't so terrible before american kids joined the fight.

I don't really remember so much fights before MS. FPS fans played Call of Duty and Medal of Honor, when there was a new game they didn't downplay it(xbox/halo fanboys).
The same was with racing genre. Even during xbox times people played previous Forza's, Project Gotham Racing, Gran Turismo, Need for Speed and many others.

That was a before MS fanboys had become tools. Buying catchy phrases, being manipulated by Turn 10 trolling, blindly believing the PR company.
Fanboy is a fanboy, but MS made tools of them fueling the fanboy war.

I know it's too much reason for some of you, but... Would you kindly enjoy being a GAMER? It's what kept us together, gaming was a reason we met really cool people, had friends with similar interests, it's a passion, hobby, even love, but some idiots think it's fun to wage a nonsensical war on this field.

This is a racing sim, not a car crash sim for car manufacturers. I never understood the hype for car damage, esp when Forza's damage barely dents the car at 100mph.

One thing I must say about the review, as I am still reviewing the game myself is that we definitely disagree about the soundtrack. Gran Turismo 5 single handedly has the best soundtrack for any game and I am not exaggerating. the perfect mix between jazzy tunes and more of todays rock or punk rock style to make a very smooth soundtrack with additions of bassanova and other titles just complete the list, I personally would have given the GT5 Soundtrack a 10/10 in a heartbeat. bravo to the sound designer for GT5

You either want licensed cars or you do not. If you want them then be prepared to abide by restrictions issued by the manufacturer. The fact that IGN is oblivious to this truth is a testament to their almost global idiocy.

If it is the best hands down then explain why it hasn't received the top score. This is because most websites and publications, IGN included haven't the slightest idea of a standard. They also have absolutely no editorial control.

Game blogs may be crap on a lot of occasions but at least handful of them comprehend the meaning of the word "standard".

Once again, PS3 exclusives are held to a much higher bar and crap titles on other platforms are given a pass on the very items with which they accost PS3 games.

When Sony doesn't give money out to advertise, their games always score low; when the money is dolled out, the games score high.

God of War III, good advertising, good 9.3 score... the easiest in the series to beat.

GT5, not a lot of advertising, 8.5 score, easiest to say that's it's the best sim racing game to date.

Not let's contrast Gran Turismo 5 and a well known flop: too Human.

Too Human got a 7.8, which means that Gran Turismo is just a little over one standard deviation above Too Human in their own website whereas others gave that game very low scores. But why? Advertising. Too Human was everywhere. Granted, I liked it, but it was no 7.8; it was like a 6.8 because of the stiff gameplay, the bad dialogue and the bery long and unavoidable animation sequence for each and every death; and yes; you'll die a number of times because of the type of gameplay if you don't shape the player according to your playing style.

At any rate, remember that when any game comes out... that's why gamespot fired someone for not giving Kane and Lynch a high score, huh? Just watch the advertising on a site and you'll be able to predict a game's score on the bigger sites.

It's really hard to read these big sites. With such huge staffs their standard of quality seems to be more wavy than consistent.

8.5 is by no means a bad score, but it reminds me of the Game Informer review of Killzone 2 where they gave it a similar score. But the things that they didn't like about the game I didn't mind so I would have scored the game higher.

I mean everyone keeps bringing up how it's scored lower than Forza 3, but two different reviews reviewed these games. You can't expect them to have the exact same likes and dislikes.

It seems like a solid game though. I'm glad to hear that since I was so disappointed in GTPSP.

Black Ops was a good example of a game that I highly enjoy, even though certain aspects bug the crap out of me.

The reviewer isn't god. He isn't the president.

and for some reason, people are confused about the "10/10 simulator in a 5/10 game" as if it's simply illogical, and nonsensical.

He means that the core gameplay is that: simulating the driving of a car to be as close a possible to the real thing. But lacking certain features that would otherwise make it more "fleshed out".

similar to a game that has no multiplayer, or a game that has no well defined career or objective as to why the player should continue to devote his/her time to master it.

It's a game that does what it does well...But after such a long time in development, most figure there would be more on the plate.

Another good example would be...Call Of Duty. The series hasn't changed the "feel" of moving about in 60 fps (most of the time anyways) and killing others. It's distinctive, and fun. Graphics/stories and such change. but the basic mechanic of shooting is solid.

If the next Call of Duty Title has little more than a rehash of the multiplayer from it's previous titles, I'd consider it to be what this reviewer says of Grand Turismo 5: a game with rock solid base mechanic but nothing beyond that.

I am still only renting GT5. No interior view, cant change wheels, lower quality detail, and only cosmetic damage on 80% of the cars is just insulting after 6 years of development. I put GT5 on my christmas list and will have it by christmas but as a huge GT fan, this is just insulting after all 6 years in development. It's already widely predicted by GT5 fans that this was already the case that reviews would not be satisfactory. However, reading the content IGN brought to the table, it is 10/10 simulator.

AND THAT my friends, is what this title is "supposedly" all about. This game was truly meant for the "hardcore-of-the-hardcore " and unfortunately, to cater for them means a devaluation in the "common" ground Call-of-Duty mainstream fanbase.

But that's what it is. A niche, and regardless of IGN's thoughts, they seem to nail the fact that the PHYSICS are what stands out in this game. For Driving Simulators, that is the most important part. Better a niche with an 8.5 score than a "casual" experience going 9.5!

I just bought this game this evening and it freaking epic. We already know the review parade against sony this gen so I dont give a ratz azz no more.

I just bought an amzing masterpiece and Im having loads of fun. The ones that seem to care here are the ones love the demise of ps3 exclusives (very sad) and to whom ever really were going to get the game. Do it, its worth it, It looks impressive, it feels impressive. My wife saw the game and said omg that looks incredible what is it.

At least my experience so far hasnt left me dancing my car with the front bumper vertically down the track.

If you would have asked me for the last five years what game was going to have a 10.0 Metacritic; I would have repeatedly told you GT5..

No matter how you cut it, the 5 year wait turned out to be a negative instead of a positive for GT5. As time passes by, expectation rise tremendously (Ask the developers of Alan Wake and Final Fantasy XIII)

I made a comment thatafter all of these years, a billion screen shots and a million hours of replay footage released, Gran Turismo 5 better drive you home after you pick up your pre-order

No matter how you cut it, the ommision of a cockpit from a major portion of the cars will end up being the achilles heel of the historic franchise.

I absolutely loved Forza 3. The quality of that game after a 2-year turn-around was no small feat.

But, I still can't wait to wrap my hands around this beast.IGNs review definately is significant and as expected going to have many of the Sony elitists in an uproar, but what crazy is hearing what's coming from PSM..my thoughts are if Official Playstation Magazine still awards Gran Turismo the big '10' review then long time fans should be fine..

As for me, I'm still shopping for a good wheel because I this will be the game that is played out of my PS3 Slim for a looong time time to come.

I was saying to expect these kinds of reviews simply because of the limitations that GT5 offers in the game like:

segmented car classes (premium and standard)
No cockpit view for all cars
no proper tuning
lack of damage
lack of modding and customization

I said that every review will be looking and comparing the features in GT5 and how they related to what is already on the market and that lack of CORE features and I lost 2 bubbles because if it. And now, the Meta is 86% and why? Because of the very elements that I stated. CORE features not being present in the game that is expected at this stage of gaming in this era.

They were actually very far from the beginning. It was only because IGN gave Lair, Heavenly Sword, and Warhawk bad reviews that ...fanboys... started going berserk and paranoid. To me, IGN is very fair with almost all of their games (yes there is about 5% that are questionable, but overall, they have spot on reviews). They grade on an overall experience not just the sum of a game's parts. They take into account different perspectives such as the hardcore fan, the casual gamer, and the gamer that wants to enter this genre.

Also, their staff is hilariously awesome. PS3 fans(and fanboys) should listen to Podcast Beyond, because it is so hilarious and informative at the same time. The folks that do the podcast are primary PS3 fanboys, but have respect for stuff like Mass Effect 2 (when it was an exclusive).

To put this in perspective, the metacritic score for GT4 was 89 and it was a monster success (IGN scored that one a 95, in case you were wondering). I expect that GT5 will received a similar score once all the votes are in. Now, is the fact that it's received an 8.5, an excellent score from IGN, instead of a 9 really going to deter racing fans from picking up this title? I'm guessing not.

IGN concluded that it's a fantastic racing game marred by a menu system that came up short. For me the menu system could have consisted of "Pick car. Click here to race" and if it delivered 10/10 on the track like IGN says it does, that's all that matters.

As a new PS3 owner I bought my copy at lunch but, considering im not normally a massive fan of racers, Im a little bit apprehensive about the purchase now. Im not really bothered about customisation but am looking forward to some 16 player online races.
The main thing that concerns me is the reference to the AI being erratic causing "bumper cars" and winning races being based on the machine rather than ability of the driver.

However, Im off to play it and I'll be able to form my own opinion!

The score is a reflection of the fact that GT5 is reviewed to a different standard than other racers have been. Nothing more. Doesn't mean the game isn't better than those, just that those other games were, frankly, over-criticized.

The fact is this game has received an almost insurmountable hype, and in the eyes of many have lived up to it or not. This game will get mixed reviews from many, but I highly doubt it will stop all fans from buying it. Does it matter if it's better than Forza 3? The answer to that will always be subjective as they are those who will always prefer either or. If you're going go but it by all means please do and enjoy. Theres going to be mixed reviews, the game is a simulator which is not always fun for some people some people prefer the arcade type racing games but maybe this is too realistic.

I think the whole damage thing is blown out of proportion I dont think its even worth talking about if they had realistic damage most people will wreck their cars with in the first corner, I couldnt careless if there was zero damage.

I really did wish that GT5 had improved AI, collision and damage, both on and off road. The game looks great but even back in the days of GT on the PS1 you'd bounce off walls, plastic tape barriers and opponents and keep on driving.

Its a pretty fair review if you ask me after I saw the gamespot full coverage on it I knew it wasn't gonna get a perfect score.The 5 years that we had to wait and only 200 get the premium treatment while the other 800 cars are just ported from GT 4 and GT psp thats a little disappointing.I mean even the Bugatti Veyron is in the standard group how is that right?The engine sounds are not accurate at all compared to Forza 3 the Bugatti sounds like it's real life counterpart it has that deep rumble unlike in GT 5 where it doesn't.Then theres vehicles like the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560 that shoot out flames everytime you downshift on GT 5 that looks way to arcadey for a sim racer and the sound of blipping the throttle sounds too arcadey aswell.I think after waiting a very long 5 years for this game to come out and this is what we get is a bit disappointing it took only 2 years to make Forza 3 and they mastered the sound of the engines,EVERY car in the game has a full interior view,theres much more customization and the driving physics are spot on.Im still picking up the game today but I don't know if I will enjoy it as much as I did when I first got GT 4.

Exactly what are you deducting points for? Is it the SHEER amount of content for 60$? Because as I recall we are paying 60$ for a certain amount of content and that conent is reviewed on being WORTH THE PRICE from 1-10. As in is is only 85% worth the price.

Reading this review, and comparing it to others is laughable. Didn't Prologue get an 8.5? So the full game is on par with prolouge, the unfinished version?

Secondly, lasting appeal... GT 5 is an almost unfinishable game. I mean all the cars, game modes, tracks, careers, etc? but I guess Forza beats it in that department, as well as looks, etc... One of the things I don't get about this reviewer is why he mentions the soundtrack in the final breakdown, dinging the sound an 8 and saying "the less said the better".

A) It's a DRIVING sim not Rockband and...
B) car music is subjective. The guy at Destructoid said the exact opposite, that he couldn't get enough of the soundtrack. He loved it.

How 'bout not even going there for closing arguments since it's irrelevant by the fact that the game can play your OWN songs from your hard drive. Same as Burnout Paradise, WipEout HD etc.

IGN, It's a driving game that supports custom soundtracks. Talk about the driving. If it's got custom soundtracks, you don't even know what the gamer will be listening to while they play it anyway.

Sounds like they are nitpicking. What about when you have to change disc for the larger 360 games. 10/10 for GT4 which is buy far the worse of the series. There's been two somewhat low scores, one being decieving. I've seen an 8.2 and this one an 8.5, however this 8.5 says 10 for being a simulator. Makes no sense.

I have to wonder how these reviewers play this game, because I presume they sit in an office with a pad, NONE of these reviews I've read about GT5 have said anything about playing it with a wheel.

And not just any wheel, I'm using a Logitech G25 in a proper racing seat and I can tell you now there is NOTHING like this out there, the handling is absolutely fantastic.

I know many of you can't afford or have the room to play this game properly, but with a proper seat and wheel this is racing nirvana, I just can't put it down.

The feel of the cars and feedback is absolutely incredible and trust me I've tried this wheel with NFS: Shift which is fun and fast, but is nothing compared to this, and the official MS wheel when I've played Forza 3 is like a kids toy compared.

REAL fans will know what this game is about, and review scores have nothing to do with it, enjoy this f*cking awesome game those that can play it properly.

By the way, it isn't cheap! £200 for the chair - £180 for the wheel - £300 for the PS3 back in the day - £40 for the game.

£720 I paid to play this properly, was it worth it? Every single penny!

Still today there are people that thinks that GeOW2 was the GoTY on that year.
The reviewers were soo ashamed what they did to UC1 that time that I guess that is why they made sure that UC2 had to win GoTY 2009.

Forza3 IS a good game that did a surprising good work with that it could be done with the Xbox360.
But GT5 is many ages ahead on most aspects ...

And yah, gt5 in a sub hd tv does not looks much better then Forza3.

I started playing it today without reading any reviews and I intend to not read any, ever. I love it. Reviews these days dont mean much. Halo 3 and Black ops were p*ss poor and sold loads regardless. I personally think the presentation and menu system in Gran turismo 5 is great.

Most of those preview replay vids and screens are complete bull though' -Forza and GT and so many other games are guilty of the same things. Actually playing GT5 and watching replays it looks nice yeah but before it looked so close to real it was uncanny.

GT5 to me doesn't look much different to prologue or even much different to GT4 which is no bad thing as that was pretty much a generation ahead anyway. It looks a bit better then Forza 3 but still GT5 has jagged adges, pop up and v synch tearing. Hell it also does more and has 16 cars per track so ditto.

Personally I think split second has better graphics then both of them but there you go, a matter of preference.

In the end its another brilliant racing game and I feel further cements polyphony digitals reputation as being pretty damned good at what they do. The online feature set and community options alone are incredible, I love all the little extra things you can do, that is what sets it apart and makes it pure genius. Oh the driving is second to none.

I definatley expected more of the game. To me Forza and GT balance eachother out. Both offer/do things that the other don't... whats the problem with that? I like the kart and rally racing of GT... but really dig the damage/customizability of Forza better...

The good thing about the mediocre reviews is the game is gonna drop down in price fast. It'll soon be 39.99. Since it didn't live up to the hype and has a bad stigma hanging over it now. That will lower sales. They won't be able to keep pushing it as the must have game at 59.99. So you see. There was a silver lining after all.

I read all of IGNs review and it reminded me of something a friend and fellow auto enthusiast told me a few years ago. At the time I was researching a new car purchase and I knew I wanted German - specifically a BMW or Mercedes. My friend being a BMW owner compared the two like this:

You buy a BMW for the joy of driving because you like driving. You enjoy the feel of the road; tight, responsive steering and performance over function.

You buy a Mercedes for creature comforts because you enjoy the comfort over the cornering and the gadgets over the performance.

In an anology, Gran Turismo would be a BMW - performance over bells and whistles and over menus. Forza would be a Mercedes - plenty of options but the focus isn't exactly the driving.

This might be the stupidest thing you've read but IGNs review only confirms that I'll love GT5.

Considering we all know PS3 exclusive games are judged more harshly than multiplats and 360 exclusives, this is a damn good score. If this was a 360 game, any shortcomings in presentation would be willingly overlooked for the driving itself, which IGN admits is great and the best of this generation. Instead, since it is a Sony exclusive, all faults must be harshly penalized. IGN gets hits because its score sets off a huge internet argument between Sony fans and die hard Sony haters. If they give the game a good score, no hater is gonna show their face and there is no controversy.

I think what you guys are failing to realize is that this is the Ps3's biggest game to date. Its bigger than Uncharted, GOW, or Killzone. It gets no bigger than this. this is one of the biggest franchises in the industry bar none. For the amount of time in development and promises that was made it has to held up to a higher standard. They had to deliver and it doesn't appear that they have even with all the time in development. Go to amazon and read the complaints. The guys that made this game should have just kept their mouths close. I knew there was trouble a few weeks ago when they tried to blame the power of the Ps3 for incomplete vision. Then the delays. This game may not be perfect but lets not pretend that is crap because of what someone thinks.

I close by saying don't be a ignorant fanboy. Forza 3 is a really good game. I will rent gran turismo on tomorrow. Outside of pictures do you really take the time to look at trees etc while you are racing?? Graphics are not noticeable while you are actually playing.
