Call Of Duty : Black Ops Sells 7 Million Copies On Day 1

According to early VGChartz estimates, Call of Duty: Black Ops has become the fastest-selling game of all time with over 7 million units sold on day one following over 4.5 million preorders as reported earlier in the week. If the 7 million for Black Ops holds true, it would make the launch around 10% larger than Modern Warfare 2 and the biggest of all time.

Lending some extra weight to VGChartz estimations are reports that over 4 million users have now connected to Xbox Live to play Black Ops and there are similarly impressive figures going around for PSN.

Then you start with the insults? Since you are intelligent enough to understand what an estimate is then you must understand why people don't believe VGCharts. They sample their numbers from select retailers and estimate everything based on their limited numbers. Other places do that but other places also have more than 30 years experience doing so.

I get the feeling too like I am missing out but I like battlefield better. I use to get COD but stopped at WaW. It's just the same thing over and over. What bugs me is that next year their will be another one and it will be the exact same. I like the intensity of COD but even on Pc it's 60 bucks and you have to pay for extra MP maps it's a joke. Its really geared toward online play, and they left local multiplayer in the dust. MW2 is way better for local.

...to compare the #s to MW2, when you consider MW2 didn't come out on the Wii. Not that I'd expect the Wii #s to be very high...maybe 500k copies tops...but still.

Regardless, it's a clear indicator at just how screwed up this generation....and gaming in general...really is. I know a ton of people are upset/worried about the plausible success of Kinect , after the success of Wii, and how that will affect the "hardcore" gamer's future. But to be honest, I'm more concerned about Activision's negative impact, than Kinect's. We already know EA has sold their soul trying to compete with COD, and we've seen countless other devs/publishers delay their games, out of fear of lost sales to the COD juggernaut (which is a very realistic fear, sadly). This generation has seen some good...even great...devs get shut down, countless promising games, even some new IPs, cancelled, gimped content because of the success of DLC, expansions and/or sequals being rushed (rather than a proper 2-3 year dev period),and tons of unfinished games going "gold", with patches being worked on at the same time...and yet more needed later.

Blame the casual market all you want...but there's nothing casual about franchises like COD, Fallout, Guitar Hero, etc....yet they are a HUGE part of what's wrong with gaming today.

This has nothing to do with Activision, or review scores. It is solely based on the fact that Call of Duty has built itself into a dependable, fun franchise that is loved by all. The good thing is that it shows the game industry is still healthy and if you make a great game, people will buy it regardless.
The downside is that it also shows companies they can milk a franchise, although the latest figures for Guitar Hero downplays that a bit.
Overall, when a game is successful like this across all platforms, it really disintegrates the whole "console war". Why can't we all just play good games and get along? We are all playing the same game just on a different system.

Not quite. I can name countless games that a masterpieces and haven't even sold a quarter of what this game has sold. Look at Ico and Shadow of Colossus. They sold like ass. Yet they are arguably some of the most beautiful games created in this industry. What you mean to stay in your statement, if you can find a popular formula and milk it with minor points of improvement, then it people will be it regardless.

Power to all of those who are enjoying Black Ops tonight. You should. I personally have nothing wrong with that, but at the same time, I just wish other games that strive for so much more innovation thrived like CoD does. If anything it will be the death of creativity in an industry where the expense of game development, coupled with low sales would mean devs and publishers stick to what sells, rather than what innovates. And this gen innovation doesn't seem to sell as well as it used to.

I guess I should have finished my statement of regardless of reviews or negative comments. Most analysts predicted not as popular as MW2, and the reviews weren't as glowing either. I am not saying that all good games sell, but in a holiday season where hardly ANY games are coming out, it' good to see the games industry isn't in a slump.

Mass appeal does have a lot to do with selling games. You also have to look at the advertising dollars put into these games. Did you see an Ico or SotC commercial? Me either. Those are 2 of my favorite games, and I can't wait for the HD releases and Last Guardian.

It is sad that games like CoD and Halo sell millions and millions while other games like Okami (LOVE that game) sell poorly. The sad truth is that while there are beautiful works of art that are truly amazing games, the majority of people who buy games want to blow stuff up. Or tackle people.

Multiplayer today isn't special to me. How is playing because you want to grab a perk that'll let you kill everyone fun? Multiplayer games used to rely on skill and now it's all on "CoD points" and XP and whatnot. There's a reason I still play Halo 1 and Delta Force: Black Hawk Down and Kuma Games. They're simple and most of them don't have hacks or cheap in-game perks. What keeps my attention is not leveling up, it's the satisfaction I get when I win due to pure skill. Hell, if I want to level up, I'd play fucking Torchlight or Diablo. Or Borderlands.

Seeing how Black Ops is on every dam platform it should have sold 10 million in two hours.
I think around 70,000 people were playing it on Steam as that number came up when the midnight install didn't work until 7am.
