GT5 Delay Decision Was “Made Yesterday"

“We’re really close, but this was an executive decision that was made yesterday,” said Taku Imasaki, the North American producer for Gran Turismo 5, in a phone interview. “Realistically, we thought we had a good date. We’re not happy over here.”

They even delayed the announcement of the delay?? :P (I'm kidding of course)

There isn't much people can do now. I hope they give us a reason. Right now it's "they want to create a perfect experience". Now, I assume every good developer has this expectation and I know of many who have made, what IMO, are (near) perfect experiences in much shorter time.

You may say that GT5 is much more ambitious, but I have to say that some of the games others have made had much less people and less funding yet they managed to make ambitious games.

I'm not exactly sure why GT5 requires so much time, I do get concerned that there is a hidden reason when I see a delay 20 days from launch. I'm not that majorly upset because I was never a huge fan of the game, but I know of die-hard GT fans that are majorly pissed. And I'm glad to see people not blindly defending the delay. Sometimes enough is enough, and though I respect the desire to make a perfect game I do think that toying the patience of the community comes at a price. Never dangle a carrot in front of a donkey because eventually he will kick. I worry that if the game isn't perfect it's going to get a lot of backlash over even the tiniest of flaws.

It's somewhat easier when you have complete creative freedom, like the games you've listed. Modelling 1000 cars to the millimetre, their handling, breaking, acceleration characteristics takes time (a LOT of time). Recreating 20+ tracks exactly. etc etc. This takes a huge amount of time, a huge amount of resources.

Do you realise the amount of red tape that has to be completed when dealing with other company IP?

It's easy to criticise when you dont really understand the volume of work.

-Alpha4936d ago (Edited 4936d ago )

But does it really take THAT much time to do all that? My comparisons may be too unfair to use, you are right that GT5 is a game based on simulating real life and not making a free game.

Honestly I don't care ultimately for the delay, it's the fact that they dangled it in front of fans for so long, and then, with only 20 days left, they delay it. I just wish they gave us a good reason because it just seems suspicious to do. I doubt it's for marketing purposes, but at the same time, what could delay it for just a month? People were more OK with a 6 month delay or a longer delay because it meant there was more to be added, but a one month delay doesn't make much sense to me.

There were bugs in the latest build, and maybe it's for issues like that. Regardless, my complaints may not mean much since I've never been a big fan. I'm not trying to antagonize anybody, but I'm just trying to say that the situation could have been handled better.

Shadow Flare4936d ago (Edited 4936d ago )

well, alpha polyphony said each premium car took something like 180 days to build. Have you seen those cars? And its not just the looks. They try and make the driving experience feel like the car in real life. All of this, everything in the game theyre trying to replicate perfectly from real life. That takes more time and research then most games where they make whatever they wanna make

But i totally agree with the anger of this delay. Its just a little bit ridiculous now

UnwanteDreamz4936d ago

I don't think they have a good reason (from a fan perspective)to delay the game or they would have given it to us. I am not happy but what can you do?

I waited this long and I'll be damned if I am not going to be there day one and that is part of why I am mad. PD knows that its fans will buy it anyway after waiting this long. Loyalty like that should not be abused.

Christopher4936d ago

***But does it really take THAT much time to do all that? ***

Not to defend PD or anything, but if you're developing to match real-world elements specific to existing items, it does tend to take a lot more time.

Other racing games that aren't necessarily attempting to match real-world specifications don't need to worry about the physics of each element as it is designed in the real world and can just fluff it up. Nor do they have to worry about the differences between what tires are being used or the struts being used and so on.

If GT5 really is matching real-world items to the physics of their world, it will take a much longer time to get this done in a manner that reflects its real-world implementation. There's also a lot more graphical work involved in texture creation and sizing. Going from 14" rims to 17" rims and on top of that designating the type of tire/tread.

Again, not to say that this is why they've extended the release date, but if the game truly reflects real-world physics I can definitely see how it would take a lot more time than a game where you can create the physics of the world based on real-world experience but not intended to match it in any way.

Bobbykotickrulesz4936d ago (Edited 4936d ago )

Dude, they delayed GT5? No way. No fucking way.

Oh my god :(

thor4936d ago

The problem is, many devs manage to pull off an extraordinary amount of work in far less time.

The other issue is that PD have their priorities mixed up! Make a functional game FIRST, then worry about modelling cars to the millimetre. Nobody is going to CARE if a car is a millimetre out, so long as it drives mostly realistically and is fun. You know, who cares that such and such a corner is 1 degree sharper in RL? It's unneccesary detail that might be nice to have, but doesn't justify a buggy game and an extra delay.

BulletToothtony4936d ago

as much as i hate it as well this is all about $ most people buy stuff within a week of the release date.. they will make more money by releasing the game in december that it will in november..

$ talks

Hideo_Kojima4936d ago

But all of the 1000 cars, all of the 180 days spent on each Premium car, all of that should/must already be done.

It explains why it took 5 years but not why it got pushed back with just 20 days to go.

PS360PCROCKS4936d ago

200 cars x 180 days is 36,000 divide that by 365 days and you get 99 years worth of work. Lol so you take that and figure it out to 40 cars a year over 5 years. The studio only has 110 employees according to their website. So basically 1/5 of their studio was designing just premium cars for the past 5 years. Guess that explains what's taking so long. Haha

SasanovaS19874936d ago

il try to make things clear from a business perspective. Sony is getting ready to launch their 3D tvs...the delay of GT5 is pure business strategy.why? because it is the perfect game to be shown in 3D booths next to the 3D tvs...you pick up GT5, and u experience it fully in 3D, ur more likely to buy the 3D tv with it...GT5 is essentially an advertisement for their 3D tvs...you cant argue with Sony on that one, their a business, and their doing whats best for the company.

It takes more time because its a simulation, not an original unique game based on fantasy. If you're trying to recreate real life things, i'd imagine that takes more time and effort to perfect then, okami for example. Youre criticised on how true to life and real your game is. Okami isnt going to be criticised for not being real enough cos it has a wolf that likes to paint pictures

i see the disagrees flooding in. cmon then, tell me why im wrong....

DelbertGrady4936d ago

I think you are wrong because if you model stuff after real life things(in this case real cars) you have specs from the manufacturers to go by.

And also, Polyphony have already been through a similar process 4 times before this game. It isn't the first time they make a racing simulator, you know.

RedDead4936d ago

You automatically lose bubbles if you don't like GT on this site.
I'm lucky they delayed it, I wouldn't have been able to get the game until the 20th in anyway. So I would just be being teased. Although that's not the case for most people, seriously what changes in the game can they do within 20 days?

AceofStaves4936d ago

The martyr complex is always good for a chuckle.

jc485734936d ago

They just don't want consumers to hold on to their wallet just for black ops. I guess Sony assumes that sales will slowdown for Black Ops by then and it wouldn't really affect GT.

UnwanteDreamz4936d ago

I love how people latch on to one side and pretend to be victims. If you go into a Halo article thinking you can offer criticism even if it is constructive then you have not been here very long. Fans take their fandom seriously.

ico924936d ago

i am so close to not buying GT5 its not even funny, and the fact that i've been a long supporter of the series hurts me to say that there's only so many previews and gameplay vids i can see of a game in 4 years i just wanna play it, its becoming a joke now didn't PD say the game was 90% done last year ? what have they been doing for a year ?

iPad4936d ago (Edited 4936d ago )

(this is MY comment that i wrote in a different article, and this comment is for you and to everyone who acts like him)

"lol you guys act like little girls.

omg!!! it got delayed!!! i hate my life! im not gonna buy it anymore!! lol.

visualb4936d ago (Edited 4936d ago )

then don't....nothing in the world will change if you don't

@ iPad

yep... I'm cool with this, because I planned on getting it for xmas, however I do understand if people are upset. but deciding NOT TO BUY IT and then letting everyone know about it = hilariously pathetic

Thugbot1874936d ago

Theey did say 90% done last year. They were suppose to come out and compete with Forza but that team has released 2 times since then and I bet they will release a 3rd one before GT5 comes out.

UnwanteDreamz4936d ago

I don't want to shout any upset fans down. I am right there with you but I seriously think that not buying is "cutting your nose off to spite your face" I mean you could wait 5 or 6 years to play it or never play it at all. Not playing GT5 isn't an option for me at this point. Really pisses me off that they have me by the short and curlies.

bunfighterii4936d ago

They probably just discovered a few bugs that needed ironing out. Hopefully it's the last delay and we see it before christmas.

Strikepackage Bravo4936d ago

so many of you defending them saying its only been one delay, made them feel like they would be fine to delay it again.

This is why I say, it is not good to defend these companies, we as consumers need to demand only the best treatment from them, you act like a bunch of brain washed zombies and they will treat you like it, now make a stink about this people, Sony is way too nonchalant about disappointing its customers.

The fact that once again, after 6 years in development, GT5 STILL does not have a release date, shows what they think of you.

phosphor1124936d ago

They probably don't have enough copies.

It would make sense.. Russia says they can't get their hands on any GT5's... preorders stopped for many sites days before hand saying "sold out."

EvilBlackCat4936d ago (Edited 4936d ago )

MNicholas4936d ago

This game is doing things a GeForce 7900GT (the GPU on which the PS3 is based) is not supposed to do.

The resolution, frame-rate and sheer quality of the visuals seemingly defies the laws of physics.

With such a bleeding edge engine running such a complex game on such complex hardware, there's bound to be some surprise bugs here and there.

While I doubt they'll eliminate them all together, they surely wouldn't want too many videos similar to these on youtube:

Three full AAA racing games from Turn10 since Gran Turismo 4 was released on PS2. Will Forza 4 come out before GT5?

PSP games and Prologues don't count.

Steve_04936d ago (Edited 4936d ago )

@tplarkin7,

"PSP games and Prologues don't count."

Why not? In that case, Forza games don't count, just because I said so. I dont think any Forza game really competes with GT so therefore none of the games to me count as a competitor. Things like the modeling detail, lighting, 16 cars on track at once, track editor, sheer number of cars and tracks, dynamic weather and day-night cycle... Forza just isn't nearly on the same level. When they have the equivalent of GT Academy I might consider it - the huge international competitions are proof that GT is much more than a game - It's the racing experience as accurate as they strive to make it.

Have fun re-buying Forza 3 in the "Ultimate edition" form just to get some DLC which is unavailable for you to pay for, even though you gladly (and blindly) would.

EDIT: Since you lack any more bubbles, I would love for you to PM me a response - I'm looking for a laugh this morning.

ChickeyCantor4936d ago

"Right now it's "they want to create a perfect experience". "

Every developer knows that the word "perfect" doesn't exist within their realm. Cause in the end they will always say that things could be done differently.

Even though i'm not going to play this game. I do agree however. Im kinda surprised its taking them this long. By now they should at least have editors for almost everything. But then again, modeling a car could take time...

Ilikegames764936d ago

Oh, if it's a demand issue, then I guess Sony doesn't really care if people do cancel their preoders because there are going to be people with money "by then" to fill those cancellations by simply walking into any retail stores.

AceofStaves4936d ago

Wishful thinking there? Or do you truly believe millions of people are going to cancel their preorders because of the game's first official delay in the West?

GT is just one of those gaming franchises, like Halo and Pokemon, that sell millions. The series has gotten along quite well without my money; I've never bought or played a GT game. A few nerds canceling preorders because they can't wait a little extra time will be like a rock tossed into the ocean.

jc485734936d ago

it's like buying a game with yours eyes closed. Really can't stand the franchise or the genre itself.

-Alpha4936d ago

I don't think GT has any reason to fear CoD. They are two entirely different games for two entirely different audiences.

I also don't think Sony would selfishly seek to maximize holiday profits for GT5 at the expense of pissing off the community like this. Maybe they have a hidden feature, maybe there is a serious internal issue, maybe they want to add finishing touches. I just wish they have a straight answer.

jc485734936d ago (Edited 4936d ago )

^^if it's not Black Ops then I really don't know what is. There are millions of people out there and how do we know that GT is only designed for that "specific audience" you speak of.

Just look at the preorder chart for god sakes. Look at how Black Ops goes off the chart.

jc485734936d ago

yea just delay call of duty and see how they react.

Eu4936d ago

There would be riots.....

I agree with PirateThom, CoD may be ONE of the reasons for the delay, but its not the only one Im sure.

Graey4936d ago

I can't see them delaying it because of that. Personally I think COD is only popular because people all want to be in the in crowd. People all want to let others know that they are playing that, and to not play it means your not cool.

Yes I know sounds a bit crazy right. Take a look at the Iphone, the Ipad. Yes they may be great devices in their own right. But do you really think everyone has one just because they are great...or more so because its a keeping up with the joneses type of thing.

Same with Starbucks: You ever notice how people go there to read, or use their laptops to write their "novels"...seriously . Only so people can see them. Its all and ego based thing.

COD: same way...we now that no one really gives a crap about the sp of the game. Why, because it's all about the MP. Bragging rights, being the first to do something, getting all those kills, being Uber.

WOW: is a perfect example as well. I play the hell out of this game by the way. But Being Uber/Leet is not an agenda of mine.

So...that being said COD is going to sell regardless and if Sony is trying to defend against that with any game, they are going to have to push that game roughly 2 months before or after COD. COD is going to sell in the millions, but take into account its also going to be on multiple platforms.

GT5 is going to sell millions as well, and its on one platform. But also add that its also a racing game. The pinnacle of racing but still a racing game. I have no doubt COD will sell more, but GT5 is legend, COD is a fad. Not saying the game won't be good, but there is suddenly a shift from what is good and what is "in" with this series.

bunfighterii4936d ago

I never thought of that one, but could be. I've preordered both

OtherWhiteMeat4936d ago (Edited 4936d ago )

Is that Gears of War 3 excuse???

likedamaster4936d ago (Edited 4936d ago )

Gran Turismo franchise is quite popular, why would they be afraid to release it alongside COD?

No one knows for sure, though. The more annoying thing is when final expectations are not being met, e.g. delays, especially after waiting so long.

You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long14d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197214d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91314d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer14d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91313d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit13d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6914d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit13d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher14d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken14d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197214d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2314d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218314d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder14d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
