Gears 3 Delay: The Beginning Of The End For 360

The gap wont close in North America in the XBox 360's life time but Japan will keep things close globally while Europe is a virtual dead head. Even in Sony finishes number 1 this console cycle, they are the big losers. They've lost huge volumes of market share to the XBox 360 and Wii but by having a longer life cycle, they'll eventually finish number 1; a hollow victory. Now on topic; Gears of War is a holiday game. The two previous iterations came out in November and Gears of War 3 was always going to come out during the November holiday period. It's a flagship title. Microsoft tried to give Halo Reach a suffient window to rebuild its community and toyed with the idea of an April release but it was never going to happen, NEVER; Believe that. It's a holiday title. Always has been.

It's funny. I really don't care for a new generation of consoles coming out. Sure there could be some improvements made and better graphics, but I'm satisfied with where we are right now. I hope Sony and Microsoft take as long as they can on getting the next consoles out since they usually lose money selling them. I imagine though, it will be somewhat like nuclear war. Once one announces a new console the other is going to have to do the same.

You can't compare, ps3 has way more great exclusives, so 1 or 2 delay is just a bliss for our wallet, for xbox is a real problem, since they don't have a lot a AAA exclusives since 2 years, and gears3 can be one of them.

I own all the consoles and I am disappointed with the lack of exclusives I can buy for my 360.
This entire year I purchased 3 games for the 360, the same as our Wii.
I didnt get past march without buyin 3 games for our PS3

I am presently playing Reach and if you think Kinect is going to do anything which is going to make halo better, you will surely be disappointed. Have you played Reach, the game engine is outdated, the game chugs and chugs

MS tends to have a good arcade lineup of games on XBL but as for major games, they are stunted. I'm not even that interested in Gears 3. I'm hoping Fable 3 is good but that's not my kind of RPG either.

And, IMO, the PS3 and Wii have variety in the bag for gamers like me who play anything. After E3 I've wanted a Wii and kicked myself for getting a 360. The tables turned with Nintendo and MS this year.

It's safe to say that the 360 has passed its prime but they will live off of multiplats and Halo, with seasonal price drops and Kinect.

What pisses me off is that now is the best time to invest in gaming studios, but they dont do it for whatever reason. If they ever get in a major jam they will be screwed. Sony was in a jam when they launched the PS3. If it wasn't for their dedication and First Party they would have been screwed. What happens if MS gets into a similar jam?

It's disappointing. MS were doing very well offering things for XBL and new titles like Gears but now XBL is tuned for Kinect and we rely on timed DLC for exclusive titles. It's frustrating to see.

With their lack of First Party and their company spreading themselves thin over both XBL, Xbox, and Kinect, I feel that MS is jumping around without settling in properly with one thing. And IMO that one thing they need to focus on is the Xbox 360. Instead the future is situated around Kinect.

M$ struggle with the whole RROD but that is long since forgotten and the 360 has been making $150 profit on 360, one year after launch. I'd also ask for proof of your figures for the profits per console on the PS3, I honestly don't know what their numbers are like on profits for each PS3 but at least the figures you quoted don't seem quite as outrageous as those quoted for the 360.

Sony are doing pretty well btw, a slew of great games from 1st party studios across multiple genres and increasing 3rd party support too. Not to mention the fact PS3 just posted 13 consecutive months of year on year growth.

I could go into how well Move has been selling and how well it has been received by critics and consumers alike but I see little point in doing so.

As for that list, there's like 2, maximum 3 first party developed titles in that list and there's like 3 of those games that aren't even 360 exclusive. The 360 does have variety, but pretty sure the point was based around the others having variety in terms of first party developed exclusives, for which Sony is the undisputed king...there is simply no arguing that point.

They are relying on 3rd party support for Kinect. Thats what we will see for the rest of this generation and probably for the next system.

I wouldn't be surprised if they moved to a purely kinect based system for the next gen - similar to what the wii is - with no option for controller based games.

And it's not about MS being a bad company or such, its just about the money. Xbox and Xbox 360 lost a lot of money and I'm sure there was a lot of pressure on the gaming division by stock holders and top MS officials to change their gaming gameplay

Xbox 360 already saw the gigantic sales of Halo Reach and will have some Fable III stuff later. Kinect will rule the holiday season and NOT flop like Move did.

Yes, LBP2 got delayed. Yes, all that's left seem to be Fable 3 and GT5. Not that that's a bad thing though, those games are good ways to end the year, though neither title particularly interests me. And I actually do agree that the Wii seems to have the best lineup for the rest of the year with DKC and Kirby.

But you argue sales where the topic is about games. Maybe Kinect will do well, it's definitely marketed to be bigger than the Move which Sony treats as an optional accessory controller.

I don't think that the 360 will die, but the issue is that it will feed off of Kinect, DLC, etc. It's just a poor system.

I'm still playing L4D / L4D2. New DLC today, btw. I still play Nazi Zombies, I still play RE5, I still play AC2.... and I'll be playing Halo Reach for months.. and months.

I invest in games because I know that if I love them, I'll be playing them for forever. If there's a drought of exclusive games for M$, then there still won't be a drought for multiplats, which I usually grab for my 360 since that's what my friends have.

i will say that if the kinect lineup fails(not talking hardware) to impress, you may see a new console sooner than you think from MS(only because they are pushing it like its the be all end all of gaming).
And on a personal note im not impressed with kinect, as full body gaming is not something i can physically do while walking using my cane to hold me up..
both MS and Sony have preached that this console gen will be longer that the traditional length but MS drastic decline in non-digital download exclusives and new ip has hurt them.

This gen will most likely be surprisingly long. The PS3 has no need for a new system, and M$ really doesn't either, except for DVDs being kind of small. But, that hasn't stopped games from being great on the system, and we have DLC now, so still, no real point.

Plus, they JUST released the Slims and they're JUST starting with motion controls. People were not happy when M$ abandoned the original xbox, and that was no where near an investment like the 360 is. I literally think they shouldn't move on to the next gen so fast. However against it I am, there are people that are going to make that investment into Kinect, which is not that cheap. Then, a little over a year later, new system, and it's not going to be supported any longer?

Plus, of all the companies, I think that M$ should take it slow. Obviously rushing a system out the door did not work out that well for them. I personally will not be getting the first version of whatever they make for the next gen. They always fix their problems well, but they never really do anything about them until people complain.

Hard to say that this will end the 360. But Microsoft has a serious problem. After Fable 3, there will be no high profile exclusive on the 360, at least that we know of. Their first party support is severely lacking, and their apparent focus being strictly on Kinect is frustrating.

The 360 isn't dead, but it has past its prime.

I really hope they don't plan on announcing their next console next year because it would just further segment the market and would create a veritable onslaught of backlash for an industry that isn't even close to ready for the next generation. I also don't think people will migrate from the 360 to another system in the same manner as they did at the start of this gen, and dropping Xbox 360 support to force players to move to the next system would destroy the traction they have gained this gen and would likely force them out of the market and that would not be a good thing.

I like a wide varity of games on all consoles. But a decrease in exclusives is not a good thing for any console. However, this generally does occur around the end of a consoles lifecycle. With AAA games taking 3-4 years to create MS could very well be working on the titles for the next Xbox... and release it in two-three years (Guessing of course). Only time will tell.

It really all depends on your perception Morgan. Granted I've seen a lot of articles bashing MS Kinect lately in particluar, but I also seen a boat load of anti Move articles before that was shown off more at E3.

My point is there are trends. Times when you see more of Sony bashing, and times when theres more Microsoft bashing. You may not see it right now, but if you keep track of things there are trends.

Maybe slightly more favorable towards Sony right now, but its not "way" out of balance.

I never noticed it until the Open Zone went away. Was probably always there. There are devoted fans that defend or attack to the level of absurdity on both sides but it does appear overwhelmingly the PS3 community being out of control and obsessed with bashing the 360.

Seems bashing the other platfrorm is a sign of fear. Maybe they should be, based on specs, Xbox 360 shouldn't be in the game. Castlevania, Enslaved, NBA 2k11 all rock on the 360, look gorgeous and perform without a hitch. And Live! is just going nuts.

Both platforms have their weak points and strong points and both have great games. I've gone back to 360 and couldn't be happier but will always love WipeoutHD and Heavenly Sword is the best game ever, but based on the Demo, Castlevania may threaten it (but with the performances by Anna Torv, from Fringe, Andy Serkis, and the actress that played Kai, don't know her, I doubt it will be surpasesd.)

Anyway, the drought is over, I'm good for a looong time, with Madden 11, NBA 2k11, Castlevania, and next week Enslaved and Pinball FX2. It can only get better for me with Magic The Gathering Expansion 3, but I'm not holding my breath for that one. Hopefully all the great games this fall will lead to more playing and news, and less platform bashing.

Edit: Don't give up on N4G yet, it's still the best place to find news. Write a blog, it'll make you feel better :)

How many times was the large, the genre defining, the supposedly most played racing franchise in the last 10 years, Grand Tourismo 5 delayed? A better end product for Gears 3, then so be it. I know everyone will not agree, but I prefer EPIC's best effort using a comfortable time range instead of a rushed and unpolished game that many would complain about. I hope they fix some of the online issues, etc. I say give them the time they need, they make a good game. One of the few shooter campaigns I still enjoy somewhat. It is not over-thought and the game play is decent. In the meantime, we got Vanquish to play when it comes out. I'll fire up my 360 again for Gears 3.
