Shinji Mikami Discusses Difficulty Settings in Vanquish

"Vanquish has four difficulty settings to choose from. One that is surprisingly fun is Casual Automatic mode. Before we started work on it, I can’t say that I had high hopes; however, once we got it up and running, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was wrong. Once you get your target on the enemy, the rest is easy as pie. I’m sure saying it that way makes it sound totally uninteresting, but when you actually give it a shot, the tempo it gives the game play will make you jump up and say, “Woohoo!”"

The four difficulty modes are confirmed to be
-Casual Automatic mode: For those who aren't sure whether pressing the buttons is actually doing anything
-Regular Regular mode: it's pretty regular
-Hard regular mode: it's hard in a way you'd expect
-Nightmare Pain Tragedy mode: Everything kills you in one hit, including using the pause menu.

-Normal: F*cking hard but eventually you'll make it. Using tutorials.
-Hard: This is for people who thought Trojan for the NES was 'too easy'.
-God Hard: Usual side effects include: nosebleed, diarrhea, migrane, tunnel vision, depression, hair loss, hallucination, hearing voices. Eventually you'll get a blackout just to find yourself lying in fetal position in the shower.

I'm glad to see what the devs have done here so that new people have a chance to enjoy the game. I was actually wondering about something similar.

See my girlfriend likes games. But for some reason she can't wrap her brain around all the controls. So my idea was "What if there was a way for casuals to get in to a game with out learning all the controls?"

I thought of a couple examples how this could work. In Gears of War 2 co op players could pick individual difficulty settings. Say if my girlfriend were to play, AND that there was an option to pick Casual automatic. Then, her character would be automatically controlled and follow my character - sort of making it an on rails shooter. You would be able to move your character on your own immediately by just pushing on the left stick. Other automatic features would be things like running to revives mates, throwing grenades, and just other little things to make the player interested and say "Cool!"

i think that kind of defeats the purpose of the game but games in general seem to be heading in that direction.
would make more sense if you put in a request for a smarter ai partner than having your friend waggle the stick or push the button every now and then.

AI isn't what I want. what I want is to play games with my friends and family without there being in restrictions or steep learning curve.
