Gamearena : Heavy Rain Review

WARNING: Spoiler in review.

People will try to argue that Heavy Rain is important for video games - that it matures the form of entertainment by providing a story above the level we're used to from developers. Trying and failing might be better than never trying at all - but that still doesn't make it anything other than a failure. When the game ends and the implausible happens - the fairy tale ending occurs - you will fully understand that Heavy Rain is child's play fiction, not a mature interactive film noir. Heavy Rain is important for video games - but only because it highlights how immature they can be as a medium.

See you're missing the point. It doesn't matter what they gave all those other games because it probably wasn't the same person that reviewed Heavy Rain. All this does is show that their reviews have been around the aggregate score for every other game.

When the average score is score for Heavy Rain is a 90% and this site gives it a 4.5 out of 10 don't you think that they're probably in the minority of those that didn't like it. No ones saying that their biased, just that this review is a complete outlier

At least one person is bound to pull at straws and say this article is paid off or biased. Personally, I think he is entitled to his opinion, if he didn't like it, he didn't like it. Just move on, don't make a big deal out of it, and realize he is in the minority. He seems to have huge issues with the story for whatever reason. In fact, he goes quite deep into the actual story and how he felt about the connection, and he clearly didn't have one. Maybe he's just heartless, but I wont blame him for not feeling connected. Perhaps 4/10 is way too low, but personally, I never go off of 1 review unless it's my own. I just want people to realize that instead of saying silly stuff like "MS paid them" or "blacklist this site because it's unreliable"

People are allowed to complain about the review but I'd like to hear good reasons why instead of just crying "fanboy review!"

For example, I find that he is too hung up on the small things:

"Eventually Ethan puts Shaun to bed before heading there himself - beginning the next chapter. The impact is lost - after spending so long as Ethan (an extended period of time if you're an explorer) you're relieved to be someone else, not emotionally connected to what Ethan feels. The line between interactivity and progression is heavily skewed here, resulting in an altogether slow start to the game."

That's on the first page, and I haven't read the 2nd page because I'm not spoiling this game. Of course maybe he is right, but it seems a point like this is exaggerated or down to his strictness for story-games.

I beat the game because it cost me $60, but I regret it, should have just watched in on youtube or something.

Oh please, the site is just fine. Just because they gave it a low score doesn't mean it's a bad site. The reviewer is entitled to his/her opinion of the game as long as he presents it with reason, and I think he did. Maybe the overall score was too low but don't bash the whole site for it. Unless you didn't read the other comments, this site gave PS3 scores high scores in the past so don't even try to pull out the "bias" card. The same reviewer gave ODST a 5/10. at least provide constructive reasons rather than blindly throwing out accusations.

Yeah, what do people usually go with anyway, GameRankings? I don't think that even with the random sites MC may approve of that it changes the overall TOO much. I mean, an overall of 83 on MC compared to an overall of 86 on GR is the same to me-- it tells me a game is considered great and that's all I really care about. Besides, this review is just fine and I welcome it to give a different perspective to how someone felt about the game. In fact I find that's the best way to decide purchasing a game: looking at the negatives instead of reading the same repetitive positives most sites list.

Yea, you're right Alpha it's not even that I disagree with their opinion, even though I would definitely give it a much higher score. My problem is with Metacritic, not the site. Metacritic has single handedly thrust importance onto sites that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Before the advent of Metacritic, how many of you had heard of BigPondGameArena, or Teletext game central? I'm sure some of you had, but their reviews probably would have gone unnoticed if not for metacritic.

What the **** is this asshole talking about? I just beat the game about 10 minutes ago and I was blown away by the last couple of chapters and the ending in general. What "immature" "fairy tale ending" is he talking about? Does he even realize that there's more than one ending? My first ending was anything BUT a "fairy tale", but then I WANTED the fairy tale ending so I went through parts of the game again to ensure that I got that ending. So now it's immature to have multiple endings, one of which is a pretty happy ending? Even the happiest of endings still has some bitterness to it. I have absolutely no idea how a critic can play this game and say that bullshit about it. It's just wrong. It's not about an opinion. He's wrong. Period. You can't say that it's a fairy tale ending when there's bitterness to it even the best of endings, and you especially can't say it when there's many other endings, some of which are downright horrid or depressing. He clearly didn't even take the time to understand how choices, decisions, successes, and failures can impact what happens in this game. This review, while giving a higher score than the TeleText one, is even WORSE than that one because it's filled with downright lies.

Hey Bungie! Stop teasing the PS3 fanboyz. I know they are very annoying at times, buy they are some legitimate gamers who own the PS3 who love this game. I don't feel sorry for Fanboyz because they do much worse. In fact, you bring the do many a favor but letting them know that not everyone see these games as great. They can then make a more informed discission. When I was about to pickup ME2 a french site gave it a 7.5/10. There did not like the fact that ME2 did not a lot the player to manage the inventory like they did in ME1. I was a bit in agreement with their perspective, but still thought it would be a good game, as I never played a bad Bioware RPG. I got ME2 and loved it more that the first but still agreed that the inventory system was not as deep. For that I agave ME2 9.8/10. I like complex games, but ME2 is still very complex with out inventory management.

Wow, what a stupid review. The plot is fantastic, the writing is fantastic, and the voice-acting is fantastic, with a few exceptions, but what do you expect from a 2000 page script! There are also parts in Mass Effect 1/2 that aren't up to scratch with most of the game.

It seems this guy has focused on the few faults of the game and exaggerated them. I can understand that he didn't like the gameplay, but in every other area the game is great, saying the plot sucks is pretty stupid as it is one of the most cinematic and emotional games EVER made.

I'd recommend that anyone who is actually thinking of buying this game to NOT read the review as there are a lot of spoilers. Lucky for me, I've already completed it and it didn't spoil anything for me.

Eh, it's one guys opinion... and if you're one of these people that follow metacritic, take a close look at the reviews. For every single review that's below an 80, there's a review that scored it a perfect 100 to counter.

As for everyone claiming we have have to accept this guys opinion, you're right. We have to accept his opinion, but in turn he'll have to respect the fact that scoring this game twice as low as the average reviewer did, will bring his gaming taste in to question by a lot of gamers.

Sorry to comment again, but I just really have to reiterate here... This guy is lying to you. It's plain and simply not true. What plot holes is he talking about? What unexplained nonsense? What cheat twist? Everything I witnessed was plausible, interesting, and fully explained. The game concluded and I felt no confusion and I don't recall any plot points that are anomalous to the rest of the events or failed to be filled in and answered. I honestly have no idea how this reviewer can say that stuff. It just boggles my mind.

Some of the scenes in this game have an intensity and emotional weight that I've NEVER gotten from any movie before, let alone another video game. To completely ignore those types of scenes and occurrences that this game has is ridiculous.

Also, anybody else notice how he devotes nearly all of his 2 page write up to complaining about the game's controls and interface, and then in the very end of it, he says that it does this kind of quick-time oriented and context-sensitive interactivity right and better than other games that use that method. So which is it?

Just finished this game, and am playing through again a different way. It was honestly one of the most unique and fun games I've ever played.

Reviews like these with a bitter, condescending tone, stating opinions as if they're facts ie: "but that still doesn't make it anything other than a failure." calling a game with a 9.0 average a failure, giving away spoilers, it's no good for anyone. I'm quite tired of these reviewers who claim that there are major plot discrepancies. There's really only one plot discrepancy, and it's not much of one. It doesn't ruin the plot, nor does it denegrate the plot or make it somehow childish. The rest of the story is completely consistent with the so called "twist," which isn't that much of a twist if you're witty enough to figure it out at any point prior to the end. Most people who seem to be upset about it are the ones who couldn't guess it, probably because the game made them feel stupid. If you play it twice, you realize there's only one thing that never gets explained, and it's not what most people even point to.

True, the voice acting was a stretch, but it's forgivable in my book because the actors are clearly not from philadelphia. Think of it as a poor dubbing, it doesn't thereby ruin the plot, or make it impossible to connect to. The problem is that there are clearly many reviewers who never liked the idea of this game, and so they never allowed themselves to suspend their disbelief, resulting in a detachment which ruined their experience. This is only exacerbated by some poor voice acting at times, but so long as you don't get hung up on something like that, you should love this game, and its story.

Im not going to take diet advise from an obese person and im not going to take any intellectual opinions from a complete moron.

I just finished the game today and it was great I had everything explained, I loved who the killer was, and I cant remember when was the last time I enjoyed a gaming experience that much.

Do people remember when they used to score games on replay value? Half way through this game I wanted to play it again and do things differently. I know I'm going to play it at least 2 more times.

The reason I cant trust this review is because I've seen a really good ending and it seemed plausible. If you dont like the happy ending there's a terrible one. The other thing he said was that madisons reasons weren't explained, but I got them explained. The voice acting wasnt the greatest, but I watch a lot of anime, and america is a melting pot, these people dont have to come from here, lol.

Sites like BigGameArena and Teletext are pretty much the reason I don't go to Metacritic anymore. If I'm at all interested in aggregate reviews I just head over to Gamerankings because it seems like they use some disgression in the sites that they include.

Over at Gamerankings Heavy Rain has over a 90% average and even at Metacritic it has an 87% with two 4 out of 10 bs reviews. I'm sorry, but when the average for a game is 90% and you give it a 4 out of 10 their is something wrong with your "professional" review criteria.

Metacritic really needs to rethink the sites that they allow on their aggregate

Yea I really don't care about their previous reviews, they gave MGS4 a 10 out of 10 and I loved that game. My issue is with this review.

Anytime you see reviews almost a full 50 points below the average they are clearly outliers, and should not be counted in an average. They can still put an excerpt from the written review for those that are interested in reading it, but I think adding them in the average is stupid.

I just think that it's unfortunate that too 4 out of 10 reviews will keep this game from a higher average

I have not played the game, but from all the vid i have seen with Jayden i am guessing the reason why he takes Tripto is do to the after effect of the ARI glasses. This is just a guess but in like tv shows or movies that have some type of new futuristic equipment being used for the first time there are usually after effects from the object. Considering that they actually give him the power to access files, and be in a different location while being in the same, i would think it would have an effect on him Physical and mental.

wow low score, Half the review is about this person talking about the first chapter of the game, one issue is that he talks about making choices in the beggining of the game where****SPOILER***ethan is rushing to save his son and he ends up dieing that part is the reason really for the origami killer to go for Ethan son, If he lived then we only have 3 character, The Origami Killer is after Ethan because of what he did, he wants to test Ethan of how far he would go for love, to protect somebody. He says he feel cheated about that death because there was no option, this is why the game is thrown into this plot, you have ethatn save his kid you lose about 2-3 charcter because of that because there would be nothing for them to follow.***END SPOILER****

I wish they would redo the whole scale, they should show all the scores, but not include the one highest and the one lowest score in the average, just to get rid of the odd balls like this one. It would be a more even average, and much more fair. You don't really know the background of the reviewer, but they get all this weight. He could have given a low score out of spite. Indeed - It sets out to challenge your emotions and manages to do so within minutes of starting. It's beautiful, artful, engaging, makes you think and stays with you long after you put the controller down (something you have to force yourself to do). My gaming experiences spans three decades and no game has ever had the same affect as HEAVY RAIN has.

Oviously that won't apply to everyone, but the hate spewed by Bungie and his zombie hoards is so transparently contrived in it's extremity as to be laughable.

Seems like an honest lackluster opinion which most happen to disagree with. That's fine, it's not a game for everyone. Some still prefer Halo, Pong or Donkey Kong.
Doesn't change the fact that a couple of other sites are clearly anti Sony. Its sad that some people are so pro or con Xbox/PS3. Why not enjoy the best of what each has to offer.

To tell the true I was expecting a broader distribution of scores for HR. The highly positive reception it got surprised me a lot. This reviewer hated the game, thats ok, it's not changing that many are loving it. Come on guys dont hit the site and move on.

Everyone has a different criteria for scoring. Graphics IMO should have the least affect on a score. If I recall, God of War 2 won GOTY despite the fact that Gears 1 was also a GOTY contender and had better graphics than GOW2. I don't have a 360 as well, but I hate the PS3 fanboys on this site that make the the normal PS3 fans(me) look stupid.

I rememeber saying that I was more interested in Alan Wake than Heavy Rain and I was automatically labeled a "360 fanboy" even though I don't have a 360. When will these people learn to use their heads? They think that all the media outlets in the world are against them. At first it was funny, now its getting annoying.

P.S. I personally don't like the Scores. Reviews should state what a game is good in and what it is bad in, like Kotaku does it with their reviews. That's the reason I am more interested in the comments than the scores. But the user scores might indicates that the game causes different feelings on it.

I think this game will only appeal to a select few. I saw some play throughs on youtube and while the graphics looks really nice the gameplay for me is just meh. If you actually had to solve problems it would be more interesting but the thing is from what I've seen the game doesn't let you continue until you solved all clues in the environment. One of the videos I saw the guy couldn't get back into the car until he investigated a body again.

Personally I think the story is fantastic. I'm not sure how it can be claimed that it doesn't make sense, though I haven't reached the end yet and it could always derail. The very same sequence this person complains about (Ethan and his son) made me feel bad for Ethan, not relieved to control another character. I don't see how this review can be seen as anything other than a pathetic attempt to undermine the game. I've been playing since yesterday and people on my friend list who are also playing it have been messaging me about their thoughts on the game. Lots of "omg"s and "wow"s. I thought it was a ridic good game, but the controls reminded me of Indigo Prophecy, and I hated those, too.. It takes so much convincing to have the characters do something on occasion, and you also have little control sometimes. For example - no spoilers - at the end of the game, I was walking in a warehouse, and there was a big circle hole about 10 feet wide and 4 inches deep the ground, with nothing in it. It was just within the straight line of where I needed to go. I walked into it, thinking I'd just get out the other side no problem, since it would have required the character to barely lift his feet more than normal, and was literally stuck. I walked full speed but the character refused to pick up their feet. I seriously had to revert to an old save just to get past it, and I was pissed. It was just so literally stupid to not be allowed to get back out, and I walked around the whole edge, with the R2 button firmly held down. Sooo dumb.

But, the story was lovely and made me angry at the end, which means I at least cared a bit about these people. Made dealing with any of the control scheme problems more than worth it.

This is love it or hate it game. It seems like the highest scores are from French Website getting early reviews.

I think this is a good AA game to start the year. If you like it, buy it and if it is not your cup of tea, then get GOW3 or FF13. Simple as that.

This review gives credence to the feeling that one either loves or hates this game.
While some websites have described this game as 'different and groundbreaking', others have called it a 'bland interactive 2d movie'.

Metacritic has recently updated their review score and it now has dropped to 87, reflecting the weighted average opinion of reputable websites.
87 is still a good 'AA' score, I am not sure why people are getting so angry about it.
It's kind of sad that fanboy's egos are so pathologically intertwined with the perceived success of their latestfavourite game.

I have to confess, I *was* really keen on this game. As I don't have a lot of spare money for games, I was tossing up between HR and ME2.

I just finished the game up today and I must say this. This game is a must have for any PS3 owner. The twist and turns it takes you from, the great graphics, and the controls are easily to use once you start playing. The gameplay was a little too short but with 296 different endings it must play over and over again.

This game breaks the ground on a new genre of video games and it deserves a 9-10..
