Heavy Rain - ZTGD Review

ZeroTolerance writes: In a world dominated by fast-paced action games and online shooters, it can be hard to attempt something new. Quantic Dream, best known for their cult-favorite Indigo Prophecy (Farenheit) have returned to put gaming on its ear once again. Heavy Rain is a story-driven experience that takes all of the traditional ideas of what a game should be and tosses them out the window. The game describes itself as an interactive drama, and that truly is what you get. Being able to tell a story that tugs at your emotions is a difficult task, but even more so in a video game. Heavy Rain achieves this by delivering a top-notch story and an experience unlike anything else on the market.

Kudos to QD for a great game!

Lifendz5169d ago

but more happy for me as a PS3 owner in that I get to play it.

Montrealien5169d ago (Edited 5169d ago )

This game is getting as well received as Indego Prophecy did, Its must for any fans of great story and adventure games.

With that said, I wont be buying it, after putting in a few hours, it just aint my cup of tea.

Kurylo3d5169d ago

not really mine either... it seems interesting and all, i just dont like the game play personally... and i hate the way u walk in this one... indigo prophecy was much easier to move around.

Shang-Long5169d ago

Dependin on how it does will determine if their next game is muilt or not. I hope it does well. I don't see QD downgrading to dvd space vs the blu Ray space they can use. But at the end of the day it's about money where it should be about the fans

Hands Up For Games5169d ago (Edited 5169d ago )

Its about time that Developers started catering to an older audience, I grew up on Games in the late 80's early 90's and dont get me wrong Mario will always have a soft spot in my heart but Im looking for something more from my Games these days.

Heavy Rain and a few other titles (that are on the market or are coming to market) are looking at bringing in a new type of Game for the consoles and that makes me one happy Gamer :) !!

BeaArthur5169d ago

What type of games are referring too? Other than Heavy Rain which games are you talking about? I think there are a lot of games that are designed with a more mature audience in mind that are already available. Heavy Rain is pretty unique and there is nothing like it on the horizon.

Hands Up For Games5169d ago

Im thinking Mass Effect, The Last Guardian, Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption and perhaps I Am alive at the end of the year. Now im not classing all these Games as similiar or that one is better than the other but they seem to be wanting to tell a story and actually tell that story in a mature way.

PC Gamers may have had these kind of Games for years but ive always been a console Gamer and to see the titles I mentioned, it makes me look forward to the way the industry is going :).

Montrealien5169d ago

I have to say, I don`t see Heavy Rain as offering anything new really, Its an Adventure game, easily one of the oldest forms of games there is. And there has been many attempts in the past at bringing adventure games to consoles and there where many amazing ones, sadly they have never been huge on consoles.

BeaArthur5169d ago

Hands Up For Games...oh, okay gotcha. I thought you were talking about more games like Heavy Rain.

Montrealien...have to disagree with you there. This is totally unique to the console platform. Although you are correct that this style of story telling has been around for a long time, the actual gameplay elements are totally unique from any other console game.

Montrealien5169d ago (Edited 5169d ago )

So tell me, how different is Heavy Rain when compared to games like,

Still Life
Dreamfall
Indigo Prophecy
Omikron
Myst
CSI games
Fatal Frame series
Discworld
Syberia
Policenauts
Clock tower
Broken sword
Shadow of Memories

All on consoles and mostly all well received by critics.

The only thing new and Original I see here is that people actually care about an adventure game coming out on a console. which is good, but lets face it, most people who are excited about this game, never played an adventure game in their life. Heavy rain does offer an interesting twist on quick time events, but that about it, at least thats all I noticed.

BeaArthur5169d ago

Montrealien...other than Myst, I have either never heard of or am relatively unfamiliar with those titles so I can't really say. From what I understand of the reviews and my own personal experience Heavy Rain is pretty unique. But I'm no expert so if you are saying all those games play in a very similar fashion than I am not in a position to argue. I played Myst though, and that game is nothing like Heavy Rain.

Montrealien5169d ago (Edited 5169d ago )

My point exactly.

As for Myst its mostly the way the story is told, Myst was one of the first to offer a somewhat cinematic way of pushing its story. From my experience, playing heavy rain and pretty much all of the above, it pretty comes down to Heavy Rain having a little something from all the titles I mentioned. I am a little spent from adventure games myself and I was getting that burn out feeling a few hours into Heavy Rain. I will try and finish it this evening though, it is a great adventure game and if people are enjoying it as their first one, I would have to suggest you look into some of the games I have mentioned although the wow factor of those games are lost in time, forever.

Anton Chigurh5169d ago (Edited 5169d ago )

Come on man, you should add Snatcher to that list. I would love to see a sequel from Kojima soon

Montrealien5169d ago

hehe, yeah Snatcher was such a great game. A must play for any gaming fan.

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1250d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1250d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1250d ago (Edited 1250d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Have you played Detroit? While it’s my personal favorite, I fully understand many preferring Heavy Rain more. I’m glad you enjoyed Heavy Rain too.

bouzebbal1407d ago

def. one of my top 3 best experiences on PS3

ClayRules20121407d ago

bouzebbal

That’s awesome to hear! What’re the other 2 best experiences?

akaFullMetal1407d ago

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121407d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121407d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.

Still have my origami crane they teach you how to make when you're installing for the first time.

C-H-E-F1407d ago

it's been 10 years? wow, that was so fast, I feel like this console gen went fast as well although it hasn't. I really look forward to the PS5 this holiday season though.
