Destructoid Review: Heavy Rain

Ultimately, Heavy Rain is an experiment that both succeeded and failed, when it could easily have been a total success if the brains behind it weren't trying so hard to be smart, and cared more about providing a sensible plot as opposed to a shocking one. As a game, Heavy Rain is pretty good for the most part. Heavy Rain is just damn lucky it isn't the movie that it wishes so badly to be.

To be honest Eurogamer.NET has been fair with PS3 only titles reviews. They are harsh but dont look blatantly biased. The same can NOT be said about EDGE regardless the score they have in store for HR.

Said several times that he didn't like this game before it came out. He doesn't like the idea of the game. He wrote a whole article about how it's "a disservice to gaming" and let's not talk about he countless negative articles about he PS3 and it's games in the past. Jim Sterling is biased and anyone who knows anything about him could not trust his opinion. The bottom line, 7 isn't that bad of a score and the gaming community has gotten too used to 8's and 9's, but it's obvious the Jim was going to give the game a score less than what it deserves because of his history of comments on this subject.

There is no denying that Jim Sterling hates the PS3 and its games. Destructoid on the whole does seem to have it out for the PS3, largely due to his influence, and that they would give the game to him to review after he already wrote an article claiming it was "a disservice to gaming" well before he got his hands on it just goes to show how biased the whole publication is. Then again, PS3 gamers don't really bother with their reviews because we know their position long before hand. Not having PS3 fan traffic driven to their site, they only have to cater to bitter Xbox fans, hence all their negative PS3 coverage.

MajestieBeast...the problem with your argument there is that Assassin's Creed and Heavy Rain are too totally different games and can't possibly be compared. Maybe he likes action games and therefore loved Assassin's Creed and maybe Heavy Rain isn't his thing. If that is the case, then yes he should not have been reviewing this game. Beaarthur-Sterling is someone who relies on being the "different" one, craves the attentrion it gives him and as a result any talent he may or may not have is entirely negated since he's become a caricature of himself through his own, massively overinflated ego and sense of self importance.

Whether I disagree with his review or not after I've played Heavy Rain is irrelevant, really, as he'd already told us what was going to happen, told us exactly what he was planning and it fit too neatly with his past reviewing and feature writing history that it's just hard to take his review seriously. He's like a songwriter who thinks of a cool title before writing the bloody song afterwards. He also knows exactly how he is viewed and knows how to garner more hits from his preciously created reputation-he wants the notoreity so very badly that he'd write nearly anything in order to further his online persona. How can you trust the reviews of anyone like that? He's far more interested in Jim Sterling than in gaming let alone any single game and it only saddens me that people still give him hits when, as a source of information for any gamer he's now completely redundant.

Were any of it funny, insightful or written with a moicum of talent or wit it might still be worth reading but, sadly, it just got too boring for that a long, long time ago -to the level where I actually find it pathetic to see a grown man wittering away his life by trying to be a sort of fanboys bogeyman.

I couldn't really care less what his opinion of Heavy Rain is as it's a game that I feel I needn to see myself before I'll get any real feel for what it's like and would imagine that's the same for most gamers unless they find the idea a real turn off to start with.

Do I trhink Sterling is biased? No, and I don't care one jot if he is or even if he said he was-I just don't trust anything he says as his image of himself is the important thing to him and not providing his readers(poor souls)with the service he's paid to provide. In faxct he'd say ANYTHING to be controversial so I doubt @I' believe him if he claimed he, indeed, did have a bias. Games writing does NOT need "characters" who think they're more interesting and important than the games they write about. Nor those that think they're so much more clever than either their readers or those making the games they write about.

We went through this with rock writers in the 60s and 70s and to see a hack like Sterling copying it now is beyond sad and into the realm of farce in my eyes. Any obvious target gets his treatment as does any easy vehicle for him further enhancing his "cred" as a "maverick" games writer by mindlessly disagreeing with his peers who do the, so mundane, job of actually providing the service that Jim's far too important to bother with.

Basically, Beaarthur, I just don't think JS is the kind of bloke anyone should be sticking up for even though I peersonally, doubt any bias other than the one he has towards everything to do with Jim Sterling himself. Christ, he doesn't even come across as meaning half of what he writes these days, his pieces often contradict the last and his desire to promote himself just got way too boring to go on with.Who hadn't guessed from last weeks D'toid piece on HR what was copming from Sterling's full review? It never had any chanxce of him reviewing it fairly as soon as he'd realised there was a chance for some more JS controversy in a new area.

His 7/10 may well be right(IDK myself and there are a lot of things that they could get caught up on)but I don't buy, at all, that he hadn't decided what he'd write and what the score would be well in advance of writing the review.I'd just avoid his pieces like the proverbial plague, to be honest. I've played the Heavy Rain demo and seen a decent about of gameplay and I would hardly call the plot, unsensible... unless it goes into space or America is invaded by Russia and America is caught off guard.

That's just ridiculous. I was one of the biggest haters of the first Assassin's creed but there's no way anyone could say the sequel deserved such a low score.

Obviously I haven't played this game so I can't say how accurate this review is (though I did love the demo) but if your site is giving 4.5 to games like Assassin's creed 2 and 8.5 to games like the Saboteur I'm not sure I'm gonna pay much attention.

I have not played Heavy Rain. However, I have seen many clips from the games. While the game has spectacular graphics and interesting mechanics, I have noticed a serious problem from those clips: the dialogues. The dialogues, in English, are awful.

Mass Effect 2 has terrific, sharp dialogues that often surpass those from decent Hollywood movies. They are even more amazing given that Mass Effect 2 includes many times the dialogues and lines in a typical movie; it is difficult enough to fill a two-hour movie with good dialogues.

Even No More Heroes 2, a Japanese game translated into English, has clever dialogues and quirky quips that are reminiscences of Quentin Tarantino films.

The dialogues in Heavy Rain, however, are just... bad. They do not flow well and they do not sound right. They are not dramatic nor fluid. Maybe they are horrible because of poor translation into English. (I suspect Heavy Rain was originally written in French.)

Whatever the reasons behind the bad dialogues are, I think the time has come for games reviewers to start paying attention to dialogues in games. Reviewers should critique some (not all) games based on the quality of the scripts and dialogues, especially for a supposedly story-driven game like Heavy Rain. Script and dialogues should be a major consideration in reviewing story-driven or character-driven game.

Obviously, some other games are just dumb action and shooting, (e.g., Halo, Gears of War.) Those games have awful clique dialogue, but I do not expect smart scripts nor sharp dialogues from FPS or shooters. For a game like Heavy Rain, I do -- and so should game reviewers.

Heavy Rain wishes to be compared to movies, but it is very lucky to be a videogame, where poor narrative is more readily forgiven. When compared to movies, Heavy Rain not only falls short, but is almost embarrassingly sub-par. Hell, compared to some of the leading narratives in videogames, Heavy Rain is below expectations. Less demanding players may be tricked into thinking the game is telling a brilliant story simply because it's not telling the kind of story that gamers are used to seeing, but make no mistake. Its naive conclusions and impossibly weak characters would get Heavy Rain laughed out of any serious film festival.

For its ambition and the genuinely exciting moments it provides, Heavy Rain is a good game. It had enough tools to be something truly spectacular, but its developers were unfortunately not up to the task. PS3 owners should definitely play it, and many will hail it as a classic, but anybody with an eye for a good story and a desire to not have their time wasted will be exasperated by the many slow chapters and the poor writing. Everybody should be able to have fun with it, and that is the most important part. It's just that the fun is accompanied by a sour aftertaste.

I WAS waiting for this game but in time i notice that it was just good looking graphics so i move away from it.

You guys(PS3 Loyalists on N4G) hyped this game a LOT! just like a lot of PS3 exclusives. Infamous anyone?

I'm willing to bet that the majority of the people here took one look at the score and who wrote it, before rushing to voice their hatred of the site. It's obvious that's whats going on, hardly any people are actually giving counter arguments to any of the criticisms the review lays out, instead focusing on the overall score then bashing the site and/or the reviewer.

I guess that's all you can come to expect from this site these days, nothing more than passionate hatred over something ridiculously trivial.

About 10+ people said the game was a disappointment and they were not even going the try the game. I guess they did not read the 10+ 9 or higher reviews the game received or even try the game.

Is anyone else tired of people calling this game a movie or one huge QTE without playing it. The funny this is the people calling the game that are the same people every time.

Note: if you do not like the voice acting play the game in french with english subtitles. The game was made by a french company anyway.

Your comment was just plain stupid! And here is why, the gaming and movie industries are basically built on the same concepts. What I mean by that, producers and gaming studios each started with an idea, and with most idea comes risk. Just think if risks were never taken we all would still be stuck in the stone age. I for one applaud QD for the risk they took, because too me this is an example of progress and not just sitting back and letting the industry stagnate. Heavy Rain and also Mag represent forward motion to me as well as it should to most people, maybe not the best in what they do, but definitely expanding the all around scope of defining genre that they represent. Video games are made that some people like, while some are made that some despise, but if out of this sea of games their is something that intrigues you or appeals too you, nothing should be able to sway your resolve on it being a purchase for you. Whether it be a friend or, a reviewers site.

Seems like an honest review to me. I didnt like the demo and found it not quite boring! I dont find shaking my controller up and down to suck on an inhaler to be very fun. Along with all the boring QTE every couple of minutes? This game couldve been so much more. I think personally the developers ruined this game. Very disappointed indeed.

It is at 90% now. This game will end up in the 88-90% metacritic score..which is great for a new IP.

I think I might just trade in my brand new copy of Dante's inferno for this game.

It is an opinion people, as long as it is getting great overall scores..then it is a great game.
