EA on Next Generation Systems

Following Electronic Arts' financial announcement the company held a media and analyst conference call, during which executives elaborated on plans for current and upcoming consoles.

In regards to Sony's PlayStation 3, the company expects to have four or five titles available within the console's launch period, which EA defines as lasting from the date of the machine's retail availability until the end of the calendar year. Among these titles will be EA Tiburon's Madden NFL 07, EA Black Box's Need for Speed Carbon (preview, interview), and EA Redwood Shores' Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. The other one or two titles were not named.

EA seems confident in the long term prospects of PlayStation 3, even if it takes developers some time to get accustomed to the machine. "This Christmas, it's going to be difficult to harness the full power of the PS3 on first generation software versus what will be second generation 360 games, so they're going to be more alike than different, is our opinion at this time," said an executive. "As those machines develop over time, there's a lot of horsepower inside the PS3 that we'll be able to unlock over years two, three, and four that we're very excited about." Now they say that because these are 2nd generation Xbox 360 games there will be no real difference. What Next? 2nd Generation PS3 games will be no difference because Xbox 360 will be 3rd generation? your comments completely fail to note that graphically, both consoles will be running images up to 720p/1080i. all ported games will look pretty much identical on the systems because sony is not using 1080p on any games, not that you would have a TV that could display them anyway, just movies. this statement by EA is simply trying to explain to potential PS3 owners why this year's game won't look very good, just as EA games already do on 360. please just do a LITTLE bit of reading before making comments which are incorrect.

Its because the ps3 got delayed from Spring 2006 to November 2006. Because of this final ps3 kits went to developers in May of this year while final xbox 360 kits when in August of that time. So basically developers have 6 months with ps3 hardware before launch while they only had 3 months with xbox 360 hardware.

You hava had an extra year to prepare your games for the ps3. Sony gave out dev kits to major studios 3 months prior to E3 2005 folks. Thats why they had Fight night being shown by EA at the 2005 E3. So being farther in developement than the this time last year for the 360 is common sense. Whats even more interesting is how companies are laying out their excuses to why the games won't be better than the 360 counterparts. Thats the funny part. And he never said that the ps3 will out perform the 360 in the coming years. He just said that it will take a few years to get the most out of the ps3. Game companies have had devs for the same amount of time within a few months for both the 360 and the ps3. Developers were just able to get their games up and running faster with the 360's ease of programming. So yes, both systems will improve over time. Next year we will hear the same excuses from devs. Well, we have just started to tap into the cell but there is still a lot more to harness, thats why the 3rd gen 360 games using XNA and Direct x 10 look a tad better. Then 4th gen, 5th gen and so on. Every year you will hear developers make excuses to why this 600 dollar console barely keeps up with the 300 dollar xbox 360. I say 300 dollar because by that time the price would have went down. Every console's price drops by 100 shortly after the first year of release. So NO, he never says the ps3 games will be better in years to come. He does say that the games are farther along than the games for the 360 were this time last year. lol.... I saw gameplay HD preview of Bullet Witch, OMG, what a load of crap that game is. It looks like a N64 game, with just shooting at anyhting, and the bullets dont show, there is no damage being shown, just at the end, the opbject blows up. I saw Saints Row also, that game is nothing but a knock on GTA. Why get that when you can have GTA later, doesnt make sense. 360 is not living up to the hype for me at all, i am so glad I didnt buy it. Ps3 for me!!

Should PS3 fans worry about their load times? I don’t think so as this is still higher than Playstation 2’s read speed, and since the hard drive is standard on Playstation 3, this will be large motivation for developers to use hard drive caching methods as a standard – not merely as feature.

More alike because they are porting their EA titles. He ain't saying the ps3 versions will be as good. He is saying they will be simular. And thats only common sense when you port from one system to the other. lol..lol...lol...The ps3 versions won't have HDR and AA activated at the same time because Nvidia's RSX isn't capable of that. Nvidias 7950 duel gpu can't even do it. And thats their latest and greatest. So there will be subtile differences in EA ported titles. 360 will have better lighting, and no jaggies. Ps3 version won't looks as good. But only by a little. If you have a hd tv you will notice a clearer difference. But remember he is only referring to the EA games not all games. So EA fans have a choice. And there are a lot of EA fans in the gaming world. Buy a 600 dollar ps3 and get games that are a tad worse than the 360 counterpart. lol....Thats a hard one. lol...lol

Also you keep comparing the $600 PS3 to a lower priced 360 when Microsoft has not announced a price cut, yes there will be a price cut in the coming year for both, but again you are just speculating. And last all of those core 360 sold went to kids who’s parents bought them because they were cheaper yet it does not have the same functionality of the premium 360 like the $600 PS3 and the $500 PS3. My point being that the $500 PS3 should be compared to the $400 360 because they are similar in specs and the $600 PS3 as an upgrade. Most average gamers will buy the $500 PS3 anyway as the hardcore will but the $600 one.

Some day, PS3 demo units and Xbox 360 demo units will sit side-by-side in GameStops across the country, and people will be able to look at games on both and decided which look better (to them), maybe even the SAME game running on both (for reasons to many to mention here, there will be VERY few console exclusives any more). And even then, people will be able to argue for one game looking better, and others will argue for the other version. It is all OPINIONS.

titles are always when a console comes out, and the devs are not used to the hardware. 2nd gen means, the devs are used to the hardware and are utlizing it to its potential. There are no 3rd Gen, and 4th gen, and 5th Gen titles. When is the last time you heard a dev say, well, we have recently developed a 5th Gen game for the PS2, its only First Gen and Second Gen.

It's more about GAMEPLAY, yes graphics may draw you in but it's the Gameplay that WILL keep you and EVERYONE esle coming back for more. Xbox 1 first gen games like HALO blew away 2nd gen games on the ps2 in every aspect of the word. Graphically, gameplay, ect.... There wan't even a question or a doubt. I was in a game expo and where were PS2, GC and just launched Xbox. Well, I tested Halo there.
After few minutes I was already fed up with that crappy controller and Halo uninteresting game.
It didn't even look that good. BUT then I got to play ICO. Goddamit I fell in love with that game in the first minute. It was beautiful and had unique gameplay. Halo wasn't even near that game. So the point here is that xbox games weren't ever in par with PS2 games.

And no one in history has worked at a gaming store where a console priced at over half a grand was successful. Every console in history priced that high has failed. I'm not saying ps3 will fail. P.S. Word of mouth is growing with young kids and teens. Gears of War is building a mass amount of hype with its TV spots and Movie Theatre trailers. No game for the ps3 is getting hype like that from "Teens" and "pre teens". All my son and all his friends talk about is Gears of War and Saints Row. The hype is ridiclous. And my friend is a manager at EB games in my local Mall and he said that pre sales for Saints Row is through the roof and he said they get 3 shipments a week of 360's and they are gone by the weekend every week. And still they aren't taking pre orders for PS3. He said its a corporate decision due to serious doubts of Sony launching as much as they claim. And I went to walmart today...same thing. 360's sold out. 7 months after launch and there was still people lined up playing the demo unit in the store.

Carmack really did something for the genre he is into just like Square rules rpg's, if you ask japanese peeps. 1. Most kids/teens don't have $600, if they did their parents would

14. The xbox 360 DVD drive loads 4x faster than the PS3 BluRay disc

16. HDD not easily upgradeable. Right now 60gb seems like alot but in
reality when digital distribution becomes the norm we will wants HDDs
with 100-200GB of storage to store many games and demos. The 360
allows for easy upgrades, it doesn't look like the PS3 is the same

17. A year late showing up to the party. The 360 has been delivering
next-gen gaming experiences for nearly a year now and will be in its
3rd swing of titles to come to market before the PS3 is even launched.

once again available as we seen with any console launch, including the

I agree. And I'm not anti sony. I just believe they made bad choices. It should come down to games. And for some of us with money it will come down to games. But to the 102 million ps2 owners who didn't buy Gods of War, or the 97 million gamers who didn't buy Grand Tourismo 4, or the 95 million gamers who didn't buy Final Fantasy X. Those Millions upon millions of gamers who didn't buy the exclusive ps2 games have a choice to make. Exclusives don't amount to 103 million ps2 owners. The price of admission for gamers to the next gen is 300 for the 360 and 500 for the ps3. So yes its a 200 dollar difference to enter into the next gen consoles. But my view on a Next-Gen console is one that has wireless controllers and at HDD (included because we all know that the 360 is nothing with it's great XBL) at the very least. As for me when I bought my 360 I went and bought the $400 verison because I wanted a full-on Next-Gen console out of the box. Why would I pay $300 plus $100 later plus another $50 for the wireless controller? that is just giving away money and all the while I can't even take advantage of the best feature of the 360 which is XBL? Yeah the Ps3 is the right choice for me. Certain games are holding me to Sony: MGS, GT, DMC, GoW, Tekken (I know it looks sh!t now but Im probably lookin forward to an online Tekken more than anything and I have full faith in Namco to give its first next-gen outing justice in the end). I still cant bring myself to buy a 360 though. Theres not really anything on it that excites me. If I am going to buy a 360 Ill get everything with it (wireless pads, Hard drive etc.) so it'll still cost me the same as a PS3.

The PS3 has a LOT of power; it just takes dedication and a different programming style to unlock it. Nothing bad was explicitly said about the 360 so I don't understand why the Xbox fans are getting pissy. Every time good news comes out on the Playstation, Xbox fanatics try to get medievel on us. Come on people, it's videogames, not a life and death situation.

On another note, I'm getting the $500 PS3 since I don't need Wi-Fi, HDMI, or those fancy little memory ports (USB thumb drive will suffice). The extra $100 i can save will be better spent on a 80~120 gig hard drive (thank god Sony lets PS3 owners buy any off-the-shelf drives they please instead of ripping us off with 20-gig drives for $100). 80-gig 2.5" drives are around 90 dollars right now, and they'll be even cheaper by the time launch rolls around which is great. I kind of wish I could get the silver trimming, but meh. (maybe they'll sell it separately?) who knows.

i can plug in any USB drive (zip, hdd, wireless router, memory stick, compact flash, SD, etc) and just transfer my data over easily to my computer. The PS3's a computer anyway, so it's not exactly difficult. Hard drive space isn't an issue for PS3 owners since they can get extremely large drives at any retail store if they choose to (200 gigs even). Right now 360 owners are stuck with the Microsoft HDDs (which are really just 2.5" SATA drives from Samsung in nice packaging). If Microsoft is 'all about choice', they should make larger drives available and stop selling 20-gig drives at such ridiculously inflated prices. Come on, hard drives aren't very expensive to manufacture.

there's a slot at the bottom of the console (if you stand it upright) where the hard drive simple slides in. That's why Sony specifically said that consumers will have to buy 2.5" HDDs (laptop size). It's not external, and installation is as easy as it is on the 360. (plus once it's inside you don't even know it's there). I'm glad Sony's making it so easy for everyone to transfer their data to and from their playstation consoles now instead of using proprietary memory cards like in previous generations. Hopefully they come out with a simple, cheap convertor to let us transfer our memory card saves onto our hard drives (as well as save new PS1 and PS2 data onto it, hassle-free). BTW, does anyone know if Microsoft has updated their Backwards-Compatibility list lately? They've been pretty quiet.

It talks about PC to 360 is easy but to ps3 is difficult but they are dedicated to making a custom cry engine that will work and use the spe's. So if its true it sounds like good news for everyone.

I've heard people here saying you need to buy the Hard drive to play Xbox Live. This is not at all true. You need a memory storage device, so a memory card will do. The hard drive is to store arcade games, demos and videos/music, and it gives you the backwards compatability emulation software. You can probably fit one or if you're lucky two arcade games on a memory card. Automatic firmware updates are stored on the internal flash drive, so even users with no hard drive/ memory left can get new features. The hard drive may be expensive, but it's not a ripoff, you just can't fit demos and emulation software on a smaller device.

I can't afford two consoles and was honestly considering switching from xbox 1 to PS3 last year, but I suspected Sony were lying about how much better the Playstation 3 was than the 360, and so I stuck to my guns. I beleive that this is paying off for me now.

I am angry at Sony for forcing their experimental disk drive on the public at premium cost. It is taking advantage of the people who made their gaming department big, just to push their HD disk product through the HD disk war. It just seems like their loyalty to the cause of fun and enjoyable gaming is taking a backseat this time around, and they're not shy about showing it.

That is why I am furiously defending Xbox 360 this gen. They at least pretend they care more about gaming than breaking into markets, and that's assuming that they're pretending.

For 100 dollars more than a 360, you get all the standard features such as DVD movie playback, wireless controllers, 20-gig hard drive, 4 USB ports, gigabit ethernet, etc. And on top of that, free internet service (for multiplayer, video and text chat, ranking, downloading new content, etc), Blu-ray video play-back, 1080p output, AND PS3 games (which are starting to show the early signs of superiority). Blu-ray also helps PS3 game developers as well (Unreal Tournament '07 for example is around 15 Gb right now, and according to Mark Rein it might even get larger.)

Some argue that the space constrictions of DVD-9 are good for developers and somehow 'stop them from being lazy', but how many gamers want to swap in multiple discs every time they want to do a new gameplay mode, or go to a different section of a game? =/

I don't think EA's statement should be read as a contribution towards the debate about the consoles' performances. That there is a sales angle to EA's statement is stating the obvious. Bottom line is that EA executives are only interested in selling as many games on all consoles as possible.

Consider who made the statement and in what context. EA executives speaking during a media and analyst conference call. Not exactly tech-speak.

And if you look at the statement, it appears not so much to be a comparison of the 2 consoles rather than a justification as to why PS3 games are going to look like 360 games despite the price difference and the age of technology.

Looking into the horizon, EA executives see that Wii is going to be a hit (EA has already reacted to that), 360 already has an established consumer base, and a big question mark hangs around PS3 because of the price point. I think the ps3 will be good but i am concerned about sony using the cell processor. Sony find it difficult to make a working ps2, i had 3 myself, so now with them creating a console with a newly released chip im weary! I already own a 360 and I love it... most of the games Im waiting to play are exclusive to 360 or by 3rd party/multi-platform developed games that I can get on my 360.

For me a PS3 isn't needed.

for me if the main games I want to play are multiplatform I will go with the cheaper system to get the same game!

if you think EA makes any game worth buying you make me lol and your taking there word over developers that take there time in making good games then devs like EA alway thinking of making money (like sony) and should spend more time in making good games than ripping ppl off all the time.

i thought fnr3 had good looking chracter modles but they should look good i mean its a boxing game theres only 2 dudes in the ring nothing special about that so what if they made the charcter modles look good thats a no brainer but they went half a$$ and slacked on the physics like EA always dose have a couple of good things but never all.

You're saying FNR3 is the only good EA game for xbox 360? It's not the only good one. I think Fifa 2006 is much better than FNR3, and I have played many Fifa games, and this last installment in the fifa-series is beautiful done and superb news for us who like football. EA is not as bad as many want them to be...

and the ps3 online would be free and i think it would work because they could have alot of advertisers on their online network, so expect ps3 online to work bug free but with 100s of pop ups and ads.

Since all of the PS3 guys want to proclaim the power of the ps3, just remember that the xbox had more power than the ps2 and on a lot of the multiplatform titles the xbox had better content and got more than the ps2 version but yet ps2 still outsold the xbox. By your logic of more power=better then the xbox should have destroyed the ps2, but did not.

It just means that the games will reflect that power, which is simply icing on the cake compared to all the other great features. People say the power difference in next-gen is going to be dismissive, but it might actually be significantly larger than it was with PS2 and Xbox. It's when you see the games in motion that the difference will become clear.

I've seen the proof. It's as simple as that. A vast majority of the PS3's power is dependent on vector programming (which only the PS2 required last gen), so not all developers are going to be able to take full advantage of it. But luckily Cell also supports C programming code (not just Assembly and SIMD vector code) so it's not like programmers will be punished for not knowing these things. I don't feel like explaining the differences between 'general purpose' and 'vector' code, but...meh. Like I said, it's not required but proper vector coding is orders of magnitude faster than general purpose. (emphasis on proper, hehe. screw up, and the consequences are pretty bad). SIMD isn't exactly for the faint of heart, and general purpose is a hell of a lot easier for programmers to deal with. I've programmed before, so you can trust me on that. =P (this is why some developers have straight out said that the 360 is easier to develop for, since they're only familiar with general purpose code. And I don't blame them. It's all dependent on the people they hire).

Game developers have a big dilemma in production schedules. They would love to spend years building perfect engines that take full advantage of their consoles, but they need money to fund it. So the obvious trend is to come out with a sequel every year or so in order to let them continuously improve their technology.

Generally speaking when you write any program in C# or any .net compliant language you create managed code. Managed code is executed under the control of Common Language Runtime (CRL). You are probably a Java or C developers so I don't expect you to understand how the .net framework works. And you are probably an anti-Microsoft so I expect you to say things like, "DirectX and OpenGL are capable of the exact same things" or "By the way, XNA isn't exactly a god-send (though it's been advertised as one). C# isn't exactly a[n] CPU efficient programming language". The funny things about it is that the majority of windows games use DirectX and lots of developers are seen the XNA as a very powerful framework. So, before you start posting useless bias comments get your fact straights, before someone that knows more than you prove you wrong.

Advantages of Using Managed Code (i.e. C#, vb.net) that do not exist with C(thing of the past)

Performance:
The CLR was designed from the start to provide good performance. By using 100% managed code, you can take advantage of the numerous built-in services of the CLR to enhance the performance of managed applications. Because of the runtime services and checks that the CLR performs, applications do not need to include separate versions of these services.
By using 100% managed code, the performance losses associated with calling unmanaged code are eliminated.

Just-In-Time compiler:

The CLR never executes Common Intermediate Language (CIL) directly. Instead, the Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler translates CIL into optimized x86 native instructions. In this way, managed code allows applications/games to run in different environments safely and efficiently.

In addition, using machine language lets you take full advantage of the features of the processor the application is running on. For example, when the JIT encounters an Intel processor, the code produced takes advantage of hyper-threading technology.

Another advantage of the JIT is improved performance. The JIT learns when the code performs multiple iterations. The runtime is designed to be able to retune the JIT compiled code as the program runs.

Automatic memory management:
Automatic memory management is one of the most significant features of managed code. The CLR garbage collector automatically frees allocated objects when there are no longer any outstanding references to them. Application developers do not need to explicitly free memory assigned to an object, dramatically reducing the amount of time spent debugging memory leaks.
There are no memory leaks in 100% managed code.

It's supposed to allow developers to easily transfer their titles back and forth across different platforms (360, PC, and supposedly PS3 apparently). Playstation 3 developers have a similar item that they're looking forward to right now called Octopiler from IBM. Octopiler is supposed to allow for auto-vectorization of code (the SPEs excel at vector code, so this will help tremendously). Here's a quick link:

The reason I said XNA isn't exactly a god-send (it's more of a christmas present) is because while it does make the lives of these developers a lot easier, it also falls back on high-level programming languages which docks CPU performance.

What I don't understand is how my statement that "DirectX and OpenGL are capable of the same things" is anti-Microsoft. According to devs the two are on on equal ground. Unreal Tournament 2007 was originally built on DirectX, and changing the parameters to OpenGL was apparently fairly easy for Tim Sweeny and gave back the exact same visual results. So easy in fact that it only took two months to create their E3 2005 realtime demo. Both DirectX and OpenGL are great.
