Jack Thompson Thinks I'm On Drugs

Blend Games writes: "This past weekend, digital games service Steam had a 30% discount on all titles from Rockstar Games. In my article about the discount, I remarked that the discount was a slap in the face for anti-video game activist Jack Thompson, who has been a vocal opponent of the company for years. My exact words were: "It's 'F--k Jack Thompson Weekend' at digital games platform Steam." Well, Mr. Thompson saw the article (maybe he Googles "f--k Jack Thompson" periodically) and decided to drop me a line on Saturday. The following is a transcript of the e-mail conversation that took place over the past four days:

Jack Thompson: Pete, actually it's called "Help Fuel a Murder Weekend." Glad to clear up your confusion.

Blend Games: Thanks for the clarification. I imagine the Rockstar Games PR department will stake out some sort of middle ground between our two suggestions. I may meet up with one of their reps next week and if so I'll be sure to give them your regards.

Thompson: Tell them I hope they all either repent or die immediately.

however, Unless your a complete moronic fool. Videogame sales to minors with an M rating is ILLEGAL and action needs to be taken to stop it.

Also, Games being "Mental Masturbation" as he so pleasantly put it, is 100% Spot on. How the HELL can you argue against that?

I'm a single 26yr old male, have a high paying professional career and I play games a lot. Maybe a few hours a day after work and the gym. Been playing since the Atari and i'm not arguing against Thompson's points. How can you? I lost YEARS of my life on playing an MMORPG known as Ultima Online, are games a waste of time? HELL YES. But its better then wasting that time on television, infact games require more brain use then TV, so games are acutally better. They induce problem solving as well as hand/eye coordination often.

His points are all valid. Were games more fun smoking weed? Yes.

Do I do drugs anymore HELL NO. Drugs screw up your brain. That FALSE pleasure is from your body being poisoned. Weird your destroying your body Yet you enjoy it... Almost a sadistic thing. Obviously my views from 16 to 26 have now changed. I used to say "weed is not a drug", "can't people just relax and not fight." Typical adolescent nieve-ness.

Parents are to blame first and formost and secondly the retailers who sell mature games to under aged kids.

So from what I know I support him on that issue of sales to minors.

I do think his attack soley against Rockstar is fairly idiotic, and the parents need to be blamed more so then the game for real world acts of violence.

You can agree with Jack Thompson's idea that games aren't a productive use of one's time and that little kids shouldn't play M-rated games but still think he's an a-hole. I imagine that's how most gamers lean.

I think you make some valid points.

It's awful to watch a young kid play GTAIV with all the partial nudity and profanity. I also dislike when gamers justify that kind of behavior...it's not acceptable.

I disagree with every tactic Jacky boy has used to detour positivity from gaming, though. It didn't help his cause.

I dont care if stores sell violent games to kids. Why? BECAUSE ITS THE PARENTS JOB TO REGULATE WHAT THEIR KIDS WATCH/PLAY. Today there is a new belief going around that everyone But the parents are responsible for raising their kids. If your under 16 chances are you dont have a job and most of the money you get is from you parents.

If these kids have the type of parents who just give them money and let them do what they want with it then that is called bad parenting. In reality the ESRB ratings arnt for stores to regulate waht kids buy, ITS FOR THE FUC#iNG PARENTS to EASILY see what their kids are playing. If thats too had for theses parents than they probably should have had an abortion, as we dont need morons passing on their traits to the gene pool.

I wonder if this guy has kids? If so he probably keeps a tight watch on what his kids play, which is the parents Job not some nerd a EB.

If people would take responsibility for their own offspring, or just not have kids that they dont want to take care of, then there would be no problelm. After all it is kinda hard for a little kid to come by 60$(let alone the money for a console) without help from the parents.

This guy sounds like he's truly bitter about something else in his life. Something happened to him at some point in his life and he holds resentments towards video games. No one will truly ever know exactly why he is so passionate about his "cause" except him. He's basically a representation of the right wing conservative generation of older Americans that disagree with anything they don't do themselves. Thank god that breed is dying out, twenty five years from now we won't have to deal with this garbage, most of these close minded morons will be long gone.
