Power of Cell Processor 'Limitless,' says 'Lair' Dev

Is the PS3's Cell chip really that much more powerful than the 360? Factor 5 President Julian Eggebrecht believes so; it's just a matter of optimizing for the PS3, he says. And while he thinks the Cell is limitless, he had some interesting observations about the limits of Epic's Unreal Engine, which he compared to the engine they're using in Lair.

There is no doubt that the cell is a beast. The way of programing is just so out of the normal. I guess in time we will seee. As far as gaming just give it time ps3 is starting to get its shine. Just like 360 did around april then again in november.

Already had about 100+ posts arguing over this same subject matter.

I think most xboxfanboys wont believe it because its hard to admit since they are support of the 360..why do you think their no other devlopers out there to debunked their statement..the cell is a monster once you learn how to use it..and they didnt even use the rsx yet..PS3 is a better hardware and much powerful system. This is only the begining what the cell can do. it will put almost all 360 games to shame..

I think most Ps3fanboys wont believe it because its hard to admit since they are support of the Ps3..why do you think their no other devlopers out there to debunked their statement..the Xenon is a monster once you learn how to use it..and they didnt even use the Xenos yet..Xbox360 is a better hardware and much powerful system. This is only the begining what the 360 can do. it will put almost all Ps3 games to shame...

see, I can make up stuff too.

Ill admit it, the cell will be better in the long run but... the RSX is NOT better than the Xenos. They have similar clock speeds and memory caches but the Xenos is much more efficient due to its UNIFIED SHADER ARCHITECTURE.

It probably will make very little difference in the end though

If you don't believe me... read up on it.

lol. limitless aye? I think he means "limitless" in that they can't see the end...but it can't be literally limitless...that would be a marvel of technology.

eques judicii6219d ago

that would be like perpetual motion

Circa246218d ago

See, it's the same way that "Stainless" steel is REALLY stainless. It just stains less.

So, the cell...uh...limits less....yeah

TheXgamerLive6218d ago

This is kind of an unknown fact, so Shhhh, mums the word, ok?

Computer chips are not limitless..Always will be out-doned, by the next- best thing. No thanks to that weak "bait" tehcellownu #3

ATI 80-core chip and the Quantum computer that nothing can beat at equations.

Armyless6219d ago (Edited 6219d ago )

The progressive and accelerated speed of Microprocessors due to the number of transistors doubling every 2 years, appears to be limitless. Moore's Law does not suggest a trend in the limitations of chips, on the contrary, it predicts exponential growth.

The Cell is not a linearly coded chipset. It is many things, including parallel or circular depending on the codeset. I think what he means by "limitless" (and I'm not apologizing for his exaggeration) is that it's limited only by the programmer's imagination and ability to optimize. Optimizing a brand new multichipset processor is going to take time and will yield very cool innovations, but it is not limitless.

SupremeX6219d ago

This chip is a research test only and is not in production. Currently it has reached 1 Teraflop of processing power which is 73% of its theoretical power.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

CrimsonWing693h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker2h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos8h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto7h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger887h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
