IGN: Need for Speed Undercover Review

Need for Speed Undercover is a poor game with a ton of problems, both technically and in terms of design. The open world design is completely lost as you can't actually drive to any event, many races are closed off which means no cross traffic, and it's incredibly easy. The presentation could have been good but winds up feeling totally contrived and confusing at times. The game could, and should, have been leaps and bounds better than it is. As it stands, though, there's absolutely no reason to pick this up over the likes of Burnout Paradise or Midnight Club: Los Angeles, both of which demolish it in every way possible.

Presentation - 6.0
Graphics - 5.0
Sound - 8.0
Gameplay - 5.0
Lasting Appeal - 6.0
Overall -

Looks like this series is officially taking a nosedive

SonyOwnsNextYear5631d ago

and to think, i actually thought EA actually was trying after dead space

Sarcasm5631d ago

Actually it took a fat nose dive with Pro street.

One of my worst game buying mistakes.

Looks like the series is officially STAYING under.

Pika-pie5631d ago

Yep, I can remember the original NFS games, every one was a classic. Now they are just dragging the franchise through the mud thinking that anything that says Need for speed on will sell.

mercyless95631d ago

Criterion Games should develope the next NFS game as they do a great job and their games are not ported. I love NFS and i cant see it go down like this.

BattleAxe5631d ago

@ 1.4

Actually, the PS3 was the lead platform for Burnout Paradise(Criterion) and it was ported to the 360.

now, this is the 3rd review I read and all I read is poor scores and bad reviews. IGN GIVE IT A 5/10 GAMEPRO GIVE IT 2.5/10 GAMEPLAY GIVE IT 6.5/10 ONLY THING THAT WILL SAVE NFS IS HOPEFULLY IN 2009 EA WILL MAKE HOTPURSUIT 3 OR HIGH STAKES 2 ENOUGH OF OPEN WORLD CRAP. EA should really take it back to it's rooots

I'LL SKIP THIS LIKE I DID PROSTREETS

hay5631d ago

Gamepro gave it 2.5/5 actually.

St05631d ago

Agreed 500% hotrider12, openworld sucks for NFS games. GTA's the only game that suits openworld imo

hotrider125631d ago

A BETTER RACER WOULD BE GRID not this crap

Need for Speed: Carbon, Undercover, and More to Be Removed from Digital Storefronts

EA has announced that Need for Speed Carbon, Need for Speed Undercover, Need for Speed Shift, Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed, and Need for Speed The Run will be removed from digital storefronts beginning today, May 31.

Kombatologist1053d ago

From a preservation standpoint, this is the one thing I hate about digital games. And things will get much worse if game streaming becomes the norm.

darthv721053d ago

The games are already preserved. Hence their existence on the digital stores to begin with. This is no different than when Disney put movies in the vault, only to bring them back years later.

spwittbold1053d ago

Not true. Mass Effect re-release trilogy did not have some of the DLC content specifically because the contractor that played a major role in it's development did not preserve it, nor did Bioware.

thejigisup1053d ago

Any idea of when marvel vs capcom 2 is coming back? That's my favorite game of all time and I can't use it on my ps3 as the file is corrupt and can't find an official dualshock or sixaxis to rebuild the database in safe mode. It's really frustrating that I can't use something I paid for that I expected to have forever.

DOMination-1053d ago

At least it is available digitally. They give you a warning, and if you purchase it, then you will still always have access to it. They will also make it available again one day when it makes sense, but right now I imagine that <100 a day play these games.

Good luck buying Need for Speed: Carbon brand new from a store.

All games have a shelf life. These games are three generations old and had massive circulation. I don't think it is EAs problem if you haven't picked them up by now.

Sgt_Slaughter1053d ago

Why defend EA's bad business practice? There's no way to spin this, it's just bad.

Retroman1053d ago (Edited 1053d ago )

NFS Undercover, Carbon,Prostreets, Rivals, 2015 Reboot, Payback , 2012 Mostwanted was no good, far as I'm concerned they can remove Heat too . it doesn't matter anymore if Ea remove them they "All" crap.
Ea went down hill after Blackbox studio left.
Ghost did not improved NFS , Criterion did nothing better and here they are back to screw NFS again. 2022 will be another flop as the first title they made (Burnout for Speed)

DarXyde1053d ago

Not a fan of those games either, but I think you miss the point: even if someone—for whatever reason—wants to buy those games digitally, they can't. And the transition toward digital platforms makes the issue that much worse. Nevermind buying physical at outrageous prices from online sellers, you literally can't play them if you have an all-digital device.

Kombatologist is exactly right: it is an issue from the perspective of preservation that is likely to get worse with the rise of streaming.

Retroman1052d ago

Ah, no. I did Not missed the point. I spoke my personal opinion on those craptastic titles.
Why would anyone in there right mind but those title's Digitally??.......there is a website you can still buy those games around 19.99 I bought the Ratchet and Clank Trilogy PS3 for 19.99 Amazon and EBay price 79.99 wish I remember the name of the site.

strayanalog1053d ago

I wonder what Need for Speed said a decade ago on twitter.

1053d ago
Profchaos1053d ago

I own some of these games does that mean I can no longer download them? Or just purchase?

boing11053d ago

Removed from storefronts so my guess is it's only about digital purchase.

Most wanted 2012 imo was awful, on PS3 the graphics are dreadful, and the crash cam was very annoying. Rival is the worst imo, hated that game. My favourite is Hot Pursuit, great game. Also Shift 1&2 are really good.

OnlyThoseOnTheFence1716d ago

High Stakes will always be my favorite. Great cars, great music, and you could see through the windows which was pretty mind-blowing at the time. Best of all it was ricer-free.

steven83r1716d ago

Lame. The list doesn't even include any of the originals. NFS 1 and NFS hot Pursuit 1998. Must be a youngster who created the list.

CYALTR1715d ago

He clearly stated that being this was an Xbox centered site he was going to limit his list to games that released on some form of Xbox. He also stated he had been playing them since OG PLaystation, so pretty sure he's not a "youngster"

Retroman1716d ago (Edited 1716d ago )

From my personal experience NFS I personally don't like.......
The Worst : Underground 2 , Carbon, Prostreets, Undercover, Porche unleashed, Nitro, NFS World, 2012 Mostwanted, Rivals, 2015 Reboot last but not least Paycrap.
Best NFS I personally like :
All ps1 NFS : HighStakes (the best) including NFS 3 Hotpursuit , ps2 Hotpursuit 2 (Excellent game ) ..Underground ( Best so far)
2005 Mostwanted ( Excellent game) Shift 1/2 (Spectacular) remind me of GT , 2010 Hotpursuit Great game but race Waaaaaaay to long in my personal opinion . Last but not least The Run . these are my favorite NFS titles .
After The Run in my personal opinion NFS went down hill fast with Open world mapping crap, always online, multiplayer crap, alldrive, drifting in every freaking corners, no gripping anymore, autolog. None of this crapfest is NFS original formula. until Ea contract Ghost Games to return the original formula back in NFS it will always be Shitty game.

I've never been much of a racing sim fan, so I was happy to see a nice mix of sims and arcade racers on the list. I definitely played the hell out of Cruis'n USA in the arcades, and the NFS series is probably my favorite racing series currently.

A sleeper hit, IMO, Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero!

BootHammer3332d ago

I forgot about Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero! This was great. I loved lining up and racing iconic imports at night on the interstate in this game =) Definitely a worthy nominee.

PixelGateUk3332d ago

Twisted Metal Road Tour, oh my days the amount of time i spent on the city roof top level. Good times, good game..the PS4 could use a new Twisted Metal

BootHammer3332d ago

Totally agree, a new Twisted Metal on the PlayStation 4 would be welcomed with open arms ;)

Der_Kommandant3332d ago

I'm still playing Twisted Metal 2 to this day

d_g3332d ago (Edited 3332d ago )

for me burnout was the 1st Racing Game

why it’s not in the list

PoSTedUP3332d ago

road rash3D
san francisco rush
GTII
NFS high stakes& hot persuit2
top gear rally
extremeG
Fzero

err, a bunch more. just some of my favorites where i had some of the most memorable fun (crusin USA, too, mentioned above). i still play GTII and would play RoadRash 3D if i didnt crack my disc. both still very fun to play, imo.

killagram3332d ago

Excellent list PostedUP. You forgot Rollcage though!

reallyNow3332d ago (Edited 3332d ago )

rollcage, driving emotion type s, auto modelista...

Edit: Jet Moto and Waverace 64 are also awesome racing games.

PoSTedUP3332d ago

thanks, i never played roll cage! :x

*slaps forehead* wave race and jet moto, of course! some of the best in the business! :)

InTheLab3332d ago

Wow right on the money there...

PoSTedUP3332d ago

thanks, then you have great taste in games. some were underdogs but absolutely killed it gameplay-wise.

Roccetarius3332d ago

We need a more improved Split Second game, but that'll never happen unfortunately.
