Bioware: Mass Effect Trilogy Exclusive to 360 - Mass Effect 2 in '09? (XboxOZ360)

In the just released September issue of Australian 360, comes the commitment of Bioware CEO Ray Muzyka "to bring the Mass Effect trilogy exclusively to the Xbox 360."

Speaking exclusively to Australian 360 at EA's European Showcase, Muzyka also stated "we said we were committed to supporting Mass Effect as a franchise and have the trilogy on the Xbox 360, and that's still our goal", before adding to the question of the trilogy staying exclusive with what appears to be a subtle jibe at Sony, saying "we're always very ambitious in our goals and the most important thing is quality, so we're never going to compromise that."

Not only will the trilogy stay exclusive to the 360, but it will be released entirely on the 360 platform. And for our gaming colleagues who enjoy their PS3's and Wii's there's still hope that they may yet get to experience the wonderful world of Mass Effect, albeit not within the Commander Shepard based trilogy.

But beyond all the console positioning and future IP speculation are some juicy details for the current trilogy that should get fans excited for what appears to be a 2009 release for Mass Effect 2...

It's personally my favourite RPG this gen. But PS3/Wii fans shouldn't lament, looks like the Mass Effect universe will continue to expand on all platforms after the trilogy. :)

Well, to be honest, you can play mass effect 1 for the least number of notes required in this generation. In the UK anyway. Christ, you could get a 360 and ME for less than Wii and BIG BEACH PARTY!!!

GEoW and Mass Effect are the most important 3rd party exclusives on the 360.So it's a given that Microsoft will do everything to ensure the continued exclusivity of those IP's till at least the end of the 360's life cycle.

@superfragilistic: If mass effect 2 is coming out end of 09, then that should put the final installment at 2011.Good to know that the 360 will still be supported till then with games like mass effect and the Too human trilogy.

Well I am afraid I can't agree with you as The Witcher on PC burns Mass Effect to the ground. The Witcher, with 5 different endings, twice the length of game. a serious upgrade system, much better graphics, motion captured fighting, currently 3 full free adventures in development, a full blown editor released to the public, the ultimate Witcher releasing free this fall to owners, no elevator simulations, no landscapes that look like a barren moon, and no cheap attempt to imitate the force, The Witcher easily smokes Mass Effect as best RPG.

whoever played the pc version of mass effect has really found the best, as for the witcher, blah, boring and repetitive, while I loved it when I first started playing, all the dialogue was boring and uncaptivating unlike mass effect, and the combat system was retardadly easy, there are some cool moments in the game no doubt, but still mass effect is a better game IMO, the witcher is more generic medievel/ancient crap with "magic" ooo, I'm sorry but mass effect is a sci-fi rpg and we don't have many of those around.
Anyway Mass Effect had lots of depth, I don't know what it was, I think it was the great combat system, one second you're interogating an alien, the next you're getting shot at, I don't know hard to explain but I still think mass effect is the better game.

Yes and metacritic is always right about everything and I mean everything, right? Bitter? No, I own Mass Effect on the 360 why should I care other than the fact that it isn't what it was cracked up to be. Look it's a shooter, not it's an RPG! Guess what? It's neither, Jack of all trades and master of none.

I was amazed how Mass Effect received all of those scores that compose metacritic. Things like a 10 in graphics when it has bland low res textures, over half the planets are barren nothing and you can only explore one small area. Worse aliasing ever in a game. The jaggies were poking out my eyes. Ahhh! My eyes! The game got a pass in many areas. It had a horrendous frame rate even becoming a slide show in some areas yet the game was given a pass by the same websites that attack other games for the very same issues.

Graphics weren't the only issue. I had to use a female character because the male Shepard's voice over was atrocious. "We'll stop him sir!" Judas Priest it sounds like Elmer Milktoast.

One website did a review and actually bothered to speak the truth as they talked about the fact Mass Effect isn't so much a RPG as it is an elevator simulator. I am in a starship and a trip up one deck in a freight elevator takes forever.

Was anything wrong with the game? Not according to that pinhead Casey Hudson. I call him a pinhead because the inability to admit where a game can be improved leads to the inability to improve a game. Maybe they will come up with more great ideas like their moronic way to institute DLC. That was some forward thinking design.

Of`course, if this game would be released on PS3, more GAMERS would be able to play it...

BUT, i`m 100% confident, that EVERY mid range PC(400$) by the end of 2009 will be able to run games like Mass effect 1/2, Gears 1/2, and EVEN Crysis at 1080p with HIGHEST settings.

Of`course, x360 probably by that time will cost 250-300$, BUT, on PC you wil get:
a) chepear games(they cost 50$ usually), so 10 games = -100$.
b) FREE online, that`s another 50$ per year, or -150$ for next 3 years.
c) PC exclusives, which are must play(like startcraft 2, diablo 3, witcher, crysis, compnay of heroes, Total War series and etc.). Though S2 or D3 have chances to come to consoles, but you never know, they might not.
d) in the end, it`s cheaper, 500-550$ vs 400$.

Overall, having PC and PS3, you will be able to play:
1) PS3 exclusives
2) PC exclusives
3) ps3/x360 multiplatform games
4) x360/pc multiplatform games at 1080p with better textures and etc.

What is better value for money, you decide. I already made my decision. =)

check out my avi, Bioshock sucks, and I don't care for it, biggest disappointment for me in recent memory, anyway console exclusivity is stupid IMO, the only reasons theres exclusives is not for the people who own the system but to get new people to buy it to play that one game, the only time exclusives are okay is in this example, where they don't think they could achieve the same level of quality as they could with the 360/PC version on the PS3, it's not that the PS3 couldn't take it its just that the PS3 is a very diffrent beast then the 360 and Bioware would have to devote a large team for the port.
edit: oh and also, Crysis can't display at 1080p, thats something HDTV's have 1080 horizontal lines in progressive scan, computer games have always been in High "Resolution" not High "Definition" computer games base it on displays, my PC can run Crysis at 1280 by 1024? I think, thats the max, and it looks fraggin brilliant.

I played it. I found it dull and laggy with a cliched story and weak characters I didn't feel attached to... I know I am one of very few who feel the game was lame but there were so many planets you either A. Couldn't go to or B. Were damn near desolate. I had incredible lag when there were more the 4 or 5 enemies on screen at any given time. No checkpoint's at all so if you die you get dropped back 5 or 6 hours of game (Happened to me 2 times) Also I feel there is way too much Sci Fi crep on the 360 anyway... I really didn't enjoy it at all and for the "Next big thing" coming to the 360 after Halo3, which I played/ beat/ went online to kill noobs and returned within a week, I felt let down greatly... and don't care for anything from bioware anymore... Game on if you like it but for me it really is "Meh" gaming.

Bioware said months ago that ME2 be exclusive to the 360 and they said even before finishing the 1st ME that they planned on releasing all 3 games on the 360. From what they said at the time they will use the basic game engine in all 3 games to cut down on the dev time of ME2 and ME3. I hope they seriously revamp the side quest tho

EA's new approach under the ever watchful and guiding rule of John Ricciliello is a completely different approach as they had before.

Remembering that was CEO of BioWare/Pandemic prior to EA acquizition comes with the entire knowledge and desire to see his old project see the light of day as they were originally conceived when they were independent developers. John Ricciliello wants GAMES to expand not implode. Like EA did with so many development studios it gobbled up several years ago.

Again, it comes down to ppl not reading what is happening within the industry, and simply seeing the sign EA and assuming the worst, or that they are still the same. Most don't even know the ex-CEO is the new COE of EA . . . and assume EA is as it was years ago, and won't even give iot a chance to be different.

You know what assuming does, don't you . makes an ass out of U and Me. So look at who's actually RUNNING Electronic Arts now, and see that Bioware's ex-CEO is now its new CEO, albeit in a different form.

Why do you think Peter Moore moved over to EA Sport, for his health. He could see it changing, and wanted to be part of that.

EA's approach now is to acquire great studios, use their unique game engines and help those studios do things financially they could never of dreamed of if they had of remained as they were.

Now BioWare have the clout and stability to work on 4-5 years of work on one title, while they also work on others. Something they could not have done if they stayed independent.

Anyways I'm not so fully convinced of EA's piety, but Mass Effect with sex scenes, Dead Space doing Saw-like gore, Mirror's Edge giving me motion sickness, Mercs 2 letting me blow up in game advertising and their patience with Spore are helping me forget the bitterness I have towards them for screwing over Bullfrog, Origin and Westwood (amongst many others!).

They'll have to do a lot more good before I'm wholly convinced of their changed ways... but yeah, they're on the right track. :)

There's a distinct chance Ubisoft are going to make a solid push for Take2 and I believe Take2 would rather go to Ubisoft than even consider allowing a take over by EA, even if EA are changing their tactics.

EA, while it has changed its ways in recent times under the new CEO and the new team he has brought in, it still is the biggest Publishing and developing house out there bar the 3 major ones. Ubisoft are fast coming up the rear and they need some excellent acquisitions to both maintain their role and to gain a deeper footing within the industry. It is one the right track, and studios like Take 2 can see the benefits in moving towards Ubisoft, rather than EA.

Ubi have recent broadened its overseas studios and moved into China/Asia so anything is possible.

Mass Effect has ALWAYS been a MS Xbox360 Exclusive from way back whenit was first concieved. I've had it on my Up-coming Xbox 360 games listing for a couple of years now with links showing the connection and the trilogy's saga.

The difference now is that more people are becoming aware of it and realizing that it is going to be exclusive. Gears was ALWAYS a trilogy, irrespective of what Mt Reins has had to say on the matter. Cliff Bleszinski (he hates CliffyB btw) stated that as early as 2002/3 when he approached MS's Ed Fries in a pub once about the game, he had a "bad arse trilogy he wanted on the 360 he'd been working on for several years, are you interested . .Ed Fries simply said, "yeah - sure, why not . . . do it" . . the rest is history.

The same applies to BioWare's Mass Effect. It's just everyone doesn't read much stuff past their noses anymore. Or read for that matter . . heheheh

Interesting find though, and in light of most things coming to the 360 of late, it just adds more fuel to an increasing fire. Now all Xbox need to do is look after those OUTSIDE the great US of A and give them the full deal with XboxLive. I might support Xbox, but I'm not blind to the fact we in Australia get shafted.

Personally I thought Jade Empire was one of the most hackneyed watered down Asian-themed RPG ever. The only thing remotely Asian was the B movie kungfu stuff with generic style names and the somewhat Asian looking buildings. The dialogue was distinctly western ideas thrown in with some asian sounding spin. I was horrified at how little research Bioware actually put into this RPG. Asian lore, particularly Chinese Lore predates Western lore/culture by at least a 1000 years. There is alot more material, story, art, craft, architecture, weaponry, armor developments, food, history that they could've used instead of some McDojo sh!t they came up with. I mean seriously they have like 4000 years to work with. This is from my perspective as an Asian.

When the tag Xbox exclusive is used it means that it will not be released on the PS3, Wii or any other console (unless of coarse it's timed). There not generally talking about pc. A few examples- KOTOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect 1, GOW, are all listed as Xbox exclusives that also were released on pc later with better content and features added.

You know, that's almost as silly as saying that when Sony releases an exclusive, it should ONLY come out on the PS3, and NOT the PS2 or the PSP for that matter, especially with todays fast growing mobile gaming movement.

The xbox360 is a PC designed machine at its core, with one notable exception. It's ONLY function is to play games first and foremost, and supply an active, online global system for "gamers' .

The PC is designed as a working tool, which many also use as a gaming device. It has multiple functions outside gaming and thus requires a great deal more oommhh for it to work and deal with the huge OS it must run and the various other software packages it has to handle, while still playing games.

When MS design a game for it's exclusive use, it also designs it for it's exclusive brands such as Games For Window. The same as Sony does when it comes up with an Exclusive, and makes a version for it's PS2 and or the PSP.

SO PC guys, give it a rest, The Xbox360 is a Console owned by MS, the PC is a machine run by a MS -Operating System, which also plays game. And, yes, you will get a better experience with a gaming rig. Hell yeah, of course you will, they cost 2 - 3 - 4 times as much, and that's great. But for $AU349 show me a gaming rig that will deliver Mass Effect even at the current 360's abilities, albeit less than a full blown gaming rig.

In the not too distant future, I'll have my own gaming rig for flight and vehicle sims, but I know which unit I'll be playing most of my games on, the 360. The PC is excellent at what it does and what it can do, but it is not a console, nor is a console a PC gaming rib. But BOTH are designed to run MS games. . . . dahh

The new "x720", (official code name) which will support the new post Jasper mother board with its unified CPU/GPU motherboard. "Valhalla" as it is known (motherboard) is ear-marked for very late 2009 or early 2010 release. My bet is probably mid 2010 at the earliest. The current xbox360 as we know it will have a life span of around 10 years, much like the PS2 has had for the Sony Playstation platform.

All prior Xbox360 games will play as per normal on the x720, so no issues will arise of the different architecture changes,and rumour has it is that it will sport a dual quad core processor. But I don't have any details on that atm, just hersay.

One difference between Take Two and SquareEnix and Bioware, is this.

Take Two and SquareEnix were making an exclusive game on a console where people don't buy games. The facts showed that, and the SquareEnix dude said that himself. The attach rate on the PS3 is very low.

Bioware are making an exclusive game on a console where people DO buy games. The facts showed that, as well. The attach rate on the 360 is very high.

So, Take Two and SquareEnix had to search other options to try and get more games sold.. the 360 did that for Take Two, and will possibly do that for SquareEnix.

If the game was multiformat the quality wouldnt be as good as it would be if it were exclusive for either console, when you take advantage and focus on one system the results are usually much better because there are parts of the 360 and PS3 which are more superior than the other

People always seem to say that Xbox games lower the quality of PS3 titles, but I've only seen the opposite, it's the xbox games suffering from games going multi-platform. GTA was delayed because of the ps3, and it had to have it's dithering increased because it ran at a better resolution. When games go from PS3 to Xbox you see stuff like DMC which looks amazing on both. Compromise is only made to the xbox version because of the ps3 version.

Nowhere in that did he ever say that it would stay exclusive (it might be their intention, but there wasn't anything there that implied that at least within this article). The "Jibe at Sony" ("we're always very ambitious in our goals and the most important thing is quality, so we're never going to compromise that.") wasn't because he never once said what he meant by that. It might be, it might not be.

I truly doubt it will remain exclusive. First of all, they haven't actually stated anything clear about exclusivity, and second of all, even if they did, these companies lie a lot. Take2 insisted that there were no plans to bring Bioshock to PS3, and Square Enix insisted that there were no plans to bring FFXIII to 360. At this stage I find it difficult to believe anything they say, unless they officially announce that it's being developed for PS3. It's easier to lie about what you're not developing on than what you are.

Gears Of War, Mass Effects is exclusive to the MS Platform . . Operative word being "Platform" . . A platform is a system that runs a game, that being, one designed to run on one companies OS, be it it one form, or the other. Light version or fully fledged version.

So Sony make an exclusive. They bring it out on the PS3, and slip it on the PS2 for more coverage and make a version for the PSP . . . is that not "exclusive" . . . of course it is, and no one says anything about it.

Cant wait to play it in 2009. Everyone can say that mass effect isnt exclusive, but it sure isnt on the other next-gaen console. For me, after playing mass effect, I wanna play ME2 ASAP and the PC isnt the place to be for that.

With games like Fable Mass Effect Lost Odyssey etc. as far as exclusives go Microsoft is slowly building a nice rpg library, wasn't expecting this to be exclusive.

In the desire to keep us (XboxOZ360-gamer) as reputable as possible, I would like to make this public retraction for a certain word being used within the article.

As Editor I take full responsibility in allowing this simple word to slip through when it shouldn't have. While My Muzyka's comments clearly show he is supporting the game, Mass Effect fully on the Xbox 360 as a platform, and for its life time and beyond, he did not use the word 'exclusive' in his comment.

At the request of Bioware's Erik Einsiedel, we would like to publicly retract the comment that Ray Muzyka supposedly made re Mass Effect being "Exclusive" to the Xbox360. His actual "comment" (seen above) did not include the word "exclusive" and thus we gladly retract that statement. We'd like to point out however, we simply commented on an article that appeared in the printed media (X360 Magazine Australia which is a sister publication to the UK parent Company under license with Derwent Howard here in Australia) and did not fabricate the comments.

And while his comment is clearly seen as supporting the trilogy on the Xbox 360 for its entirety and beyond, the word "exclusive" was not used, all be it inferred. So we appologize for that.

And just to "Clarify things", we only reported what was PRINTED in a publication: here is what that publication wrote in it's latest Issue #4, page 14 First in it's very first paragraph: and I quote:

"Speaking exclusively to 360 at EA's European Showcase. BioWare CEO Ray Muzyka restated his company's commitment to bring the Mass Effect trilogy exclusively to the Xbox 360, despite having been brought up by Electronic Arts and analysts claiming it would go multiplatform."

Note THEIR use of the word "Exclusively" - NOT ours. We simply reported the fact. It's a bit like shooting the horse because YOU rode it into something. It wasn't the horse's fault, but the rider, and in this case, the magazines.

2009 for part 2 and if they can 2010 for 3 PLEASE... lots of PS3 fanboys in here saying "he didn't technically say that" or "it's not what he realy said" and "EA is multiplatform" even though most of those same PS3 fans hate everything about EA. I think they should port it over since the PS3 fanboys wan't it so much. They sure can't stop talking about it, it's like the MGS4 thing but on the PS3 side. Mass Effect will become what Valve's games and Bungies game are, third party exclusives. Microsoft will not let this one go, they wil $$$$$$ to make sure it stays for al long as Xbox fans buy it.
