IGN: Metal Gear Solid 4 Review

Twenty-one years ago, the gaming world was introduced to a hero: a soldier that fought alone against impossible odds to save the world. Over time, the hero grew into a legend that changed the gaming landscape and redefined stealth action games with his epic battles. After more than two decades of service, Solid Snake is finally receiving an honorable discharge in the latest chapter in the Metal Gear Solid franchise. While this is Snake's final mission, he isn't going quietly into that good night, nor is he being constrained by previous titles. Indeed, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots shatters the proverbial bar, becoming a technical, cinematic and gaming standard that future action and stealth titles will be judged by. It's been a long time coming, but this game is a true classic and a masterpiece from Hideo Kojima, Kojima Productions and Konami.

Yeah Baby. I was wondering if a non-biased website still exist on this damn internet, and i think IGN is probably one of the best reviewer.
Now i wonder how Eurogamer, Gamedaily and GameTrailers feels.

LeSouteneur5788d ago

****ing FANTASTIC!!! After playing this game for 9 hours straight and taking my 3rd break from the game (sad, I know ;) hehe) it truly deserved it.

Bigrhyno5788d ago

Ya I am 3 hours in so I can't comment too much. But based on that and a little MGO, I am super impressed.

killax35635788d ago

10 point 0 baby....that's what I'm talking about.

Hopefully GS gives the game at least a 9.0.

iamtehpwn5788d ago

you've redeemed yourself for the great sin of giving GTA IV a 10.

pharmd5788d ago

yeah its about time and finally worth it!!!!!

not that i follow reviews but still...

finally Kojima gets the credit he deserved, great game!!!

mikeslemonade5788d ago

Woohoo IGN my favorite new site.

sonarus5788d ago

Hahahha. IGN strikes again.

joydestroy5788d ago

sweet. yeah i'm only 3hrs in or so as well.
i can admit it's the best game i've played in my entire life, no exaggeration. so very addictive.

pharmd5788d ago

@scentless apprentice

i love that saying, i use it all the time....

good call!!!!

MikeGdaGod5788d ago (Edited 5788d ago )

i've been play on and off since 12AM this morning so i'm giving it a rest until the Celtics/Lakers game goes off. i wanna keep playing but my eyes are BURNING!!!!!

most incredible game i've ever played. and i'm not even finished with ACT II yet.

EDIT:

Celtics all the way! Kobe is the best player in the NBA, but he's also a crybaby, punk-ass, fake, lame-ass, b!tch. he's also a horrible teammate and leader. i've never seen a MVP act the way he does. he puts down his teammates and is a poor example at being a superstar.

sorry for the rant. i'll admit that he's the best player in the league right now, but i'd never root for him. he took himself out a playoff game two years ago because he was mad at Phil, he told the police he should've paid off the girl like Shaq does after he caught that rape case in Denver, he doesn't hang out with his teammates, and he let his wife come out the house looking like a clown when he accepted his MVP trophy (seriously did you see what she was wearing wtf!!!). i could go on and on. i'm rooting for those that give their all in every game.

KG ftw!!!

on-topic:

did you guys see that part in the game when the girl was cooking the eggs? i really wondered if that was game graphics or actual video. amazing

ScentlessApprentice75788d ago

Who you rooting for? I'm apart of Laker Nation baby!

The Lazy One5788d ago

but that video review sucked A$$. it didn't review anything. It just said what was already said and sucked kojima's balls.

I don't care if the game got a 10; I'm completely fine with that, but review the flipping game. I think in the whole review the only gameplay mechanic he actually "reviewed" or "criticized" was the instant ammo, which was a bullshit stance on it, because it will completely change the game for the average gamer. People could run through gears using only the chainsaw, but people don't; it's the same concept.

Game deserves a 10, but that review still f@cking sucked.

Michael Jackson5788d ago

Wooooohoooo! I am totally stoked for this game! Props for IGN, for being true gamers and reviewers.

meepmoopmeep5788d ago (Edited 5788d ago )

IGN:
"Is it possible to give a game an 11? If so, this would be the game that would merit that score."

well deserved.

i've been playing for 10+ hrs and not even finished Act 2 o_O
Game of the FOREVER!
"yeah, i went there!"

sonarus5788d ago

Game of the forever indeed.

I am also on a break for finals game. Lakers for the FTW!:D

shazam5788d ago

they had the balls to give 2 10s in the same year, within 2 months of eachother. even though gta4 is far from a 10.

Genki5788d ago

I'll remember that when the next high profile title doesn't get at least a 9 from them. 9 because it seems that the sheeple, both XBox and PS3, don't tolerate scores lower than a 9 for their favorite games.

Insecurity really rules the roost around this place.

I wonder when gamers are gonna start having fun with their hobby again and quit taking ownership, sides, and pride in games. SNES and Genesis had a pretty fierce rivalry, but at least the owners and fans were down to earth.

MikeGdaGod5788d ago

CELTICS ALL DAY

down 24 and they still came back to crush the Lakers

oh yea on-topic, i love MGS4

interrergator5788d ago

noone realy cares about eurogamers kuz they bunch of mgs haters

ScentlessApprentice75788d ago

Damn Hideo Kojima is a F'n genius. He better make some more games beyond this or else I'm going to go ballistic on everyone (JK). I would even go as far to say that Kojima is as good as Shiguri (did I spell that right?) Miyamoto of Nintendo fame, but Kojima is better because he doesn't make childish sh*t like Nintendo products.

Millah5788d ago

@ Scentlessapprentice: Its Shigeru Miyamoto....but Miyamoto doesn't make games as good as he used to make them. He hasn't made a game as great as Zelda OOT, since, well OOT. Hes not even as active as a developer as he once was. He did help with the Wii and Wii fit ideas though. He hasn't made a new IP for Nintendo since Pikmin. Don't get me wrong, Mario Galaxy was great, but he didn't have the same kind of role he used to have in his n64 days and it still really doesn't have the same feeling of wonder his N64 games had. So Kojima easily trumphs Miyamoto nowadays.

Pika-pie5788d ago

This is the best time to be a PS3 owner. 2 AAAAAAAAAAA titles in a space of 2 months.

Plus a nice stream of titles for the rest of the year, happy times...

jtucker785788d ago (Edited 5788d ago )

@Millah - You're right about Miyamoto. He didn't even come up with Galaxy. One of the other nintendo bods did (forget who).
Miyamoto's role in Galaxy was to hold the thumbs up and say "Yes, I'm happy for you to go ahead with that idea."
He was involved at various decision stages, but he didn't come up with the ideas.

Recently Miyamoto has just released attrocities like Wii Sports and Wii Fit.
Well done for getting casuals into gaming, but Wii Fit and Wii Sports are pretty crap.

theKiller5788d ago

i will check their site more often now than before!!
damn baby thats a good score from a big site!!

but i still think MGS4 should get 11/10!!!
its the game of the century!!!

LJWooly5788d ago

While I think this game deserves a 10 too, I have to agree with Genki (bubble to you, by the way). You're all far too quick to dismiss a site as biased when they say what you don't want to hear, but when IGN, who recently came under criticism for giving Haze a 4.5 and GTA4 a 10, give a game the score you want it to get, suddenly they're magically redeemed.

Believe me, I'm a huge, huge MGS fan, and I agree with the score IGN gave the game, but I don't allow my opinion to be as easily swayed as you lot. People need to start thinking for themselves and enjoy their games, regardless of what the "professionals" think. The magical ability to think for ourselves seems to be a dwindling quality these days, which is a damned shame.

Reviews mean nothing. Why? Because no matter what a game scores in reviews, it doesn't change what comes on the disc, and you're still going to be playing the same bloody game.

Legion5788d ago

By non-biased, you mean someone that agrees with you? Ha... that is funny. They write something you don't like, you flame. They write something you do like and they are the saviors of gaming journalism. So funny. lol

Maldread5788d ago

I agree with you both. A site isn`t biased just because it dosn`t give your favorite game a 10. Seems some people have forgotten that a 9, or even 8 is a good score. If one game should get a 10 though, i`m sure MGS4 would be qualified for it.

But i do feel a lot of reviews aren`t very consistent with their reviews and subtract a lot more for some games over small issues, and let others slip by without remarks. I often feel that the score dosn`t always match the things they highlighted in the reviews either, which is why i read reviews too and not just look at the scores. I do feel that if one wants to criticize a review though, they should start with arguing why that aspect is scored unfairly, than just saying sites are biased.

Nothing beats playing the game for themselves though as LJWooly said. I actually can`t play MGS4 because none of the stores had a PS3. They had MGS4, but not a PS3. So close, but yet so far, i suppose. Hope all who has both a PS3 and MGS4 enjoys it though. I`ll just have to wait some more :(

solidt125788d ago

The guy that said this game deserves a 11/10 wasn't exaggerating. I think this game deserves a 12/10. This is easily the best game I have ever played times 10. I don't think any game will ever be able to top it and that is my complete unbiased opinion.

Nineball21125787d ago

It's probably old news by now, but Gamespot gave it a perfect 10! I was shocked... Heh.

Excuse me,I have to go laugh at GameDaily.

where is that sorry B***h the Mart at?

oh yeah, hopefully you guys all got the bundle too. It's pretty hefty.

I only had to wait in a parking lot in front of target for an hour to get it.

Pretty anti-climactic. No one showed up but me....until I bought the bundle...then about 4 kids showed up. They got 8 in total, which was better than the 5 systems so-called "gamestop" said they were getting.

Go Target, Go Kojima.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro40d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7240d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

Profchaos40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2340d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Hideo Kojima laments that Metal Gear Solid 4's digital battlefield 'is no longer science fiction'

Game creator Hideo Kojima is and probably will always be best-known for his creation and stewardship of the Metal Gear series at Konami, which since his departure has been more-or-less on permanent hiatus (don't mention Survive). In his almost three decades these games evolved to the point where they predicted certain problems of the information age (MGS 2), took aim at contemporary topics like Guantanamo Bay (MGS: Ground Zeroes), and ended on a profound sense of sadness about our species' inability to break the cycles of global conflict (MGS V).

It's not clear what sparked this reflection, but Kojima's been thinking about Metal Gear Solid 4, an entry that was (and unfortunately still remains) a PlayStation 3 exclusive. In that entry the player controls an aged Solid Snake in the year 2014, caught up in a civil war being fought between Private Military Companies (PMCs).

Dirty_Lemons351d ago

That was a great fucking game/ movie.

DarXyde351d ago

To this day, it's one of those games where I refuse to skip the cutscenes, no matter how many playthroughs I've done.

But if you ask me...MGS2 was bloody prophetic and has aged like fine wine. That game was blasted as the weakest entry, and yet it's so enduring. I replayed it some time last year and it was remarkable.

sadraiden351d ago

Heed not the lamentations of people that say that MGS2 is bad because of the Snake/Raiden bait and switch. Every MGS game has its own merits, and while most people consider 3 to be the best, they all shine equally in my opinion.

porkChop351d ago

@sad

I would generally agree but with the exception of MGSV. It had truly excellent gameplay/combat, but dull and largely empty open world(s), and a narrative that is literally only half finished.

I really wish Kojima hadn't tried to go open world with MGS. It just wasn't right for the series. But I get it. He didn't want to make MG anymore but he wasn't allowed to make anything else. So he had to experiment within that franchise. Still, it was the wrong direction.

Santouryuu350d ago

I have been thinking about this a lot, MGS2 being the weakest and getting blasted.
My conclusion, for some years now, it's my favorite game of the series.
Going from MGS1 to MGS2 was such a big leap, in graphics, mechanics, etc.
And now it's even more relevant for being 'bloody prophetic' as you stated.

Maybe dust of my vita and play it again...

porkChop351d ago

It's a shame we never got a remaster of MGS4. The original game only rendered at 1024x768, and it ran anywhere from like 20fps to 60fps depending on the area. A remaster could have very easily cleaned up the visuals and performance. It's such a great game. I just want to play it again but in its best possible state.

MIDGETonSTILTS17351d ago

I agree, but they did all sorts of tricks to make use of the ps3’s cell processor….they’d probably have to rebuild the game in order to make it run on another machine. And, if that involves remaking those cutscenes somehow, then itll never happen, unfortunately.

porkChop350d ago

Nah. There have been plenty of remasters of PS3 games and they've turned out fine. It can be done.

PitbullMonster350d ago

Ah a man of culture. Duty calls

cell989351d ago

He was always ahead with this series. MSG1 taught me about the importance of passing on our genes into future generations but in a responsible way, for they are bound to what we experienced in our lifetime. Sons of liberty taught me about global control and simulation runs to test society in a grand scale, the importance and dangers of control of information. MGS3 taught me about patriotism and how that can blind you into doing things you never would have otherwise, all for the sake of politicians who only see you as another pawn in their grand scheme of things. MSG4 taught me war is inevitable and always orchestrated because it's great for the economy. Soon simulation systems will start dictating who goes to war and why, all run through proxies. Privatization of military company are already here. We already started to see how a small group of elites dictates everything that happens. Nothing is done, nothing happens without strings being pulled.

Eidolon351d ago

You learned all this from MGS?

Tody_ZA351d ago

All that was literally the themes and core story of each game, so not surprising he learned that from MGS. Metal Gear Solid 2 in particular is so relevant today, it was more than a decade ahead of its time and a work of genius. Kojima saw what the digital future was going to become when it was in its infancy. Even MGS 5 despite being unfinished and less of a traditional Metal Gear Solid game with regards to story, had a fair bit to say about language and control over it that is relevant today.

It's a highly acclaimed series for a reason, and one of my favourite.

Eidolon351d ago

I've watched my brother play the MGS games, but I only beat MGS1 myself on the PSP in 2014, and MGSV in 2016. I took the themes and plots as lore, tbh.. trying to piece together the story of MGS rather than relating them to our current times.

Tody_ZA351d ago

It's definitely social commentary, Eidolon. You should read the "themes and analysis" section of the Wikipedia page for MGS2: Sons of Liberty for a start! Game was heavy on this.

Eidolon351d ago

I'll take a look, thanks. Actually might pick up MGS2 again (PS Vita), It's been years since I last played. Might start a new game tbh.

sadraiden351d ago

MGS2 literally predicted digital manipulation of information that we see today all the way back in 2001. MGS2 became Zucc's playbook.

Knushwood Butt351d ago

MGS taught me not to pee my pants.

cell989350d ago

Yes back in 1998 when I was 13. Throughout the years more information has been shown on this subject matters, but go back to early 2000s and information wasn't as prominent. Kojima was ahead of the game

sadraiden351d ago

If it wasn't for the retconning of how FOXDIE works, including clunky scenes with Naomi and Liquid, MGS4 would be a perfect game. There are so many gameplay options. It felt like us PS3 owners got something truly unique and special.
