Perfect Dark XBLA Confirmed and Big E3 Announcement

Puzzles me to this day. Reviewers have always fallen all over themselves for Perfect Dark and I just couldn't stand either of them. GoldenEye was a masterpiece and I expected at least that level of quality on Perfect Dark but I got a cartoon with cartoon guns.

I've never understood the appeal of these games...and I tried! I spent hours playing Perfect Dark Zero on the 360, taking it online and slogging through the single player and I kept thinking "Ok, it's got to pick up, or get me a cool new weapon...anything!"

I'm legitimately stumped by what people see in this game. Any thoughts? I'm a huge FPS fan, from Killzone2 to Halo, Counter Strike to Goldeneye to Call of Duty to Time Splitters to Quake. I just did not like Perfect Dark. Or Sin. That was another I never understood the appeal of.

What did you like about Perfect Dark? I'm not bashing. I've played plenty of games people raved about and I didn't like. I'm curious what so many saw in these games. Another example. I did not like Mario Galaxy. One of the best reviewed games ever and I who loved Mario 64 back in the day did not like it. I played it for about 2 hours before I shelved it never to be played again. It just didn't feel like Mario to me, and I thought I might have just outgrown platformers because I didn't like Ratchet and Clank either, but then LBP came along and I can't get enough of that.

It's been awhile but I didn't like the characters. I found them bland in both games and the story non-existent. The weapons (and bear in mind, it's been a long time) seemed to lack any type of "punch" to them. I was never crazy about the art direction. All and all it just felt generic, and not in a good way. In Perfect Dark Zero I also hated that there was no type of cover. No matter what vegetation or whatever was between you and the speck of a guy in the distance, he would still see you instantly and be able to hit you. And I remember there was something about the save that ticked me off in the first one - but I can't remember now exactly what it was.
And back to Perfect Dark Zero - It was a next gen game that looked like ass, in my opinion. I had Call of Duty 2 and King Kong when I bought my launch 360 and those games at least looked a bit better than the Xbox games I played before - but I was expecting "Wow!" from Perfect Dark and I got "Meh."

I never played multiplayer on the first Perfect Dark. My roommates I used to play Goldeneye with were gone so I can't say what that was like, but Perfect Zero never held my interest long enough for me to really get into the multiplayer. I tried it a couple of times, shelved it, tried it again after a couple of months, shelved it again.

Like I said, I'm not bashing it - I just don't understand what there was about this game that so many went ga ga over.

Now compared to GoldenEye, Goldeneye had the benefit of great characters. The gadgets felt right because it was Bond, after all. I never felt like I was simply going through the motions in the missions and gladly played them over and over. And the multiplayer was just so damn satisfying (but like I mentioned, I never really did Perfect Dark multiplayer, and Perfect Dark Zero was a waste of time when you had Call of Duty 2). You think maybe it was just the multiplayer that hooked most people?

PDZ was the second Xbox 360 game I brought(first one was Dead or alive 4 which was awesome). I remember buying it after I read Gamespot's review on it and I after I played it I thought the game was 100% trash. One of the worse games I have played on 360.

Perfect Dark was an amped up GoldenEye, and improved on it in every way. I have never played PDZ, but when I say "Perfect Dark 2" I'm talking about a true sequel, not a prequel that got mixed reviews.

In the original, the weapons were more numerous than most (there were like 3 dozen different weapons, secondary modes, creative tactics to use), you could steal them from enemies and make them dizzy, you could put bots (called Sims) in the multiplayer and arrange their teams, it tracked your stats in many areas, which was a little newer for a console game in it's time, it had a shooting range with all 40 or so weapons and 3 medals to earn for each, it had many "Challenges" where you faced bots in preset multiplayer matches with specific goals, there was voice acting on a 64 CARTRIDGE game, you could put teams with humans and AI, and arrange them and give your Sims personalities (aggressive or scared or suicidal or prefer explosives, ones that seek the top player, etc..), you could pick and choose where weapons go for multiplayer, you had unlockable cheats, I actually liked the plot and art direction (conspiracy, aliens, sci-fi, etc...), it could do 4 player split screen, something newer games seem to fail at doing most of the time (it's all online only if you want to deathmatch), it was different depending on the three difficulty levels (due to objectives), the levels were VERY varied in location/style...I could go on and on, Perfect Dark defined what I knew to be a great shooter, with modern tech and solid dev time, the same team would have made a contender for best shooter ever if they'd made the online addictive a la COD 4 or KZ 2 etc... Simply put, it's tied as my fav game ever with Ocarina of Time, but, to each their own, you can dislike it, doesn't bother my experience or memories of it.

I never touched Perfect Dark either. I'm not sure, but I was young back then so maybe I didn't know about it.

However, I can tell you to this day that I played Goldeneye so much that I beat every level with all the intel and the hardest settings to get that retarded golden gun that can kill you in one shot. I also got so many things that I unlocked those last two levels and beat those on hard.

My brother and I were goofing around one day on multiplayer in Goldeneye. I started mashing all sorts of buttons because he goes to the bathroom, and when I get to the character menu screen, there are all these new characters. That was the day that I swear to hate Odd Job for the rest of my life.

Perfect Dark did EVERYTHING that Goldeneye did and made it better. They put everything in that game that they could including the kitchen sink, and it was all polished to perfection.

Perfect Dark Zero was lots of fun, but not mind blowing, no quarrels there.

I went back and I read some old reviews and combined with your comments I think I figured it out. Perfect Dark Zero was just a mediocre game and just didn't compare to Call of Duty 2 at the time. It wasn't that there was anything really wrong with PDZ, it's just there were better shooters at the time.

With the original Perfect Dark, I just didn't play the multiplayer. That's what everyone fell in love with. I never bought Perfect Dark, I just rented it over a couple of weekends and I had no one to play the multiplayer with me, unlike Golden Eye which I owned and we popped in whenever we had friends over and were having a few beers. Reading through some of the old reviews the amount of weapons and the addition of bots was pretty unique at the time. I just missed out on the multiplayer as I believe I was more caught up with Quake III at the time and my opinion of the game was colored by that fact.

@ All Time Greatness. Seriously, give it a rest. Some of us come on here because we're gamers and like to talk about games, no matter what platform. liked the single and multi-player of Perfect Dark (again, just talking about the original, haven't tried the prequel, PDZ)...but that's just me. The voice acting and levels and design, weapons, cheats, balancing, mood, and stealth aspects, etc.. there were even hidden levels and weapons within levels, tricks to use, etc...and it was even better than GoldenEye's single player (which was already highly stellar to begin with)...I simply loved everything about PD 1.

As much as everyone wants KI3, I'm not entirely sure it'd constitute a "Big" announcement. It's just...I dunno, I don't think beat 'em ups have been all that big this gen. We've had some big hitters like SC4, but there wasn't much of an impact from them. SF4 was about the biggest splash we've had so far and even then a lot of the hype has died down (And that's frickin' street fighter!).
They've all been great games, just it seems not as many people have been as interested in beat em ups this generation.

Or maybe it's just me. I still wouldn't say no to KI3, though!

I really dont care what Rare has to say. Their output has been lackluster at best since they left Nintendo. Thats a long time to be not producing anything really worthwhile. VP is fun, but be fair, roughly ten years of work and thats their best game? I miss the old days.

But it looks like I get to go back there again. Perfect Dark is huge. I'm very happy about this. Time to dust off the old Xbox, and maybe time for some real multiplayer. 4 way split screen with bots is way more fun than online, and the XB controller craps all over the N64s cramped design. Laptop Gun, here I come.

I would love to see a perfect dark sequel. PDZ was pretty innovative with online co-op that made you go in totally separate directions. 32 person multiplayer with up to 16 bots. It was very different because you couldn't use any of the weapons to spray and pray. The weapons were pretty distinct having some pretty cool alternate fire modes. You couldn't jump, but you could role. That made some people mad. It had some pretty cool mechanics, just needed some more refinement. Enemies also needed to be bigger, for easier aiming ala most modern day console fps. Call of Duty 2 was a better/funner game, but pdz had far more depth.

Please let it be Kameo 2 and not PDZ2. Perfect Dark Zero IMO is the worst FPS i've played this gen. It is horrid on so many levels and proves that Rare don't know how to make an FPS. Does the 360 need another mediocre FPS? Hell no! Does the 360 need a platformer/action type game?? Hell yeah!

To be honest I dont know what Rare still does good anymore. Maybe Killer Instinct would be a good place for a fresh start. We can only hope.

Crab, there's a difference between Perfect Dark and Perfect Dark Zero(out of ten). I have heard so many great things about Perfect Dark, but I've heard the opposite of Perfect Dark Zero.

perfect dark zero 2 would be awesomeee...but i'd be more interested in Conker (more than killer instinct because the fighting genre doesn't appeal as much to me as Conker would)...Big fan of conker for n64 and perfect dark for n64 and killer instinct...damnnn rare made some great games back in the day...hopefully their next games make improvements that do the old games justice not like how the new banjo doesn't feel like the old banjo and perfect dark didn't make a huge splash when it launched for the 360 like it did for the n64

EDIT: I'm a big ps3 fan but microsoft has me in a knot because of rare...ehhh wish i could afford having both systems now!! E3 is gonna be a huge step for all 3!!!

If this article is insinuating an XBL re-release of Perfect Dark 64 then I have mixed feelings about this potential release. I loved this game 10 years ago--however, unless it has revamped controls, it will have no value outside of nostalgia. N64 gameplay/graphics were great in their day, but shooters have since evolved so much that this game will play terribly if it isn't given a next-gen facelift. Don't get me wrong, I played the hell out of this game when it first came out (FarEye ftw), but after busting out my N64 last year, I was really disappointed at how poorly the controls of that period have aged.

They own the rights to these games...but they aren't the same Rare that created Donkey Kong Country, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and Killer Instinct. These guys seem pretty lackluster, at least from what we've seen so far.

Let's be honest for a second here...Rare sucks now.

I think Microsoft's best bet right now is to absorb the employees and have them work under a better studio that they annex...like Epic or id.

I love this game. Still got it for 64but all my controllers are crap. This game also had some frame rate problems on the N64. Now we will finally be able to play the VS mode in more than 5 FPS.

This game was ahead of its time and I think with online, better FR and dual analogue controls this game can be even more amazing.

It was by no means a bad game, it had solid graphics, good gameplay mechanics and the co-op was interesting and new, and at the game was well over 10 hours which is a feat in itself this day and age.

However with that being said, the game just felt like it was deserving of the xbox and not the 360. Still a good 8/10 game but then again it was also a launch title.
