Final Fantasy 14 Requires Game Pass Subscription to Play on Xbox

The Xbox version of Final Fantasy 14 requires a Game Pass subscription on top of the massively multiplayer role-playing game's own monthly cost.

Its not really anything new, MS has always required Gold to play online, regardless of whether the game has a sub or not (Sony only does it for F2P games)

Gamepass core replaced Gold (same price) so now you technically need Gamepass to play online. Its just a clickbait article.

Ideally they should do the same as Sony and not require it for games that have their own sub (no idea if there are any others in the platform though)

To be honest if it’s going to be a game pass digital it makes sense as most of the Xbox owners are digital version according to the FTC papers 🤷🏿

I think I did mention multiple times that MS vision is to charge you for services similar to cable companies charge you for TV. I just didnt realize it was going to start so early.

To play online, which this game is, you need GamePass.
This is normally the case for all non-free online games on both Xbox and Playstation, but in cases where there is a separate subscription, the games doesn't require PS+ on Playstation.

Here's where it becomes strange that you need to pay both GamePass and the monthy FFXIV sub.

no, well, I know that, I’ve played FFXIV before. What I mean is, in case of FFXIV you still have to buy the game on top of the monthly subscription (like WoW).

On PS it’s like this:
1. You pay for the game (or it’s expansion)
2. You pay for the monthly subs
3. The online part doesn’t require PS+

So does the 1&3 included with gamepass or you still have to buy the game separately? Like you need to pay 3 separate bills?

If true MS can jump in a lake. While I pay for GP yearly and this wouldn’t affect me it’s still an anti consumer move. This needs to not be a thing. It would have been better to drop FF14 on GP and just let people pay for the FF14 sub.

Its not actually something new, the issue is how the article is phrasing it ( well that and the actual policy has always been weird )

You have always needed Xbox Live Gold to play online, regardless of whether the game also has a subscription (Sony only requires PS+ if the game is F2P)

And then Microsoft changed Gold for Gamepass Core (still same price), so technically you “now” require GP to play online too

I think this is just misusing F2P as PS+ isn't required for F2P. F2P being stuff that's actually free like Fortnight and Apex Legends. COD and the like requires PS+. I'm assuming the other exception is stuff like FFXIV where you have to pay a monthly fee specifically to play that game since Sony might be getting a cut of that fee already.

Gold is basically Gamepass Core now. I am not surprised that they will require it to play online, plus the sub for FF16. This isn't anything new either, Phantasy Star Online 20 years ago was the same situation. Why all the pretend outrage as nothing has changed? What would be nice of Microsoft is that they would waive the requirement like how they do with free to play games though.

XIV = 14

Phantasy Star Online was a 4-player online co-op and didn't have a subscription plan. Not on Dreamcast, nor on GameCube or Xbox.

1) It's Game Pass Core, not regular Game Pass. Core is basically XBL Gold. It seems like the wording is causing some confusion.

2) It's still dumb either way. If the game requires its own subscription you shouldn't have to pay for GP Core/XBL Gold too.
