Starfield has fewer players on Steam than Skyrim

PCgamesn writes, "The Starfield Steam player count has dropped below that of Elder Scrolls Skyrim, just two months after the new Bethesda RPG first launched."

Probably because most are playing it on GP. No reason to buy it full price when you can get it cheaper.

Crows90216d ago

But I thought that the claim was it sold well? If it barely sold on Xbox because of Gamepass then most sales would be on steam no? And it that's the case and there's very few players active...that doesn't bode well for something people would play for years

Profchaos215d ago

Anecdotally I know quite a few people who were obsessed at launch but they're interest fizzled out around two weeks and then dropped it completely around CP phantom libertys launch.

Seems that was a trend as the last month has been wall to wall releases if imagine most people moved on

EvertonFC215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

The truth is, the game was average to good at best, nothing to set the world on fire and when all said and done it'll probably sell about 4m across Xbox and PC which ain't great but the bigger problem for MS is that it didn't increase GP numbers.
Most GP casuals probably never played more than a few hours etc.

StarkR3ality215d ago

@profchaos

Exactly what I did, played it, beat it within like 60 hours, initially enjoyed it, and then replaying Cyberpunk made me realise how many elements of the game were below par.

itsmebryan215d ago

@Crow
How does this change the number of games already sold 9n steam and everywhere else? The people that bought the game could has finished. I for one don't continue to play games after 8 complete them. Numbers may change as new content comes out.
Do you feel a month and a half is not long enough to finish a game?

mkis007215d ago

Bryan

This was supposed to be a new skyrim. A game that has unlimited replay value for 10 years.

Juancho51215d ago

It’s a trash game. Only popular because there was nothing else to play on that console.

Lightning77215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

Do you expect the game to have 100, 000 players every month? You realize Skyrim has wealth of content and more mods and has been around for 12 years vs 2 months you also expect pplto ng+ 100 times also? Whenever the new Expansion drops the player count will go up that's how it all works. Plus they plan on sticking with it for 5 years this is only the beginning.

Congrats fail submission post. Next up let's post Exo Primals player count next, Mortal Kombat player counts.

Your little immature hate parade for this game is chilling you need to see a doctor bro.

babadivad214d ago

It did sell well. Doesn't mean people will keep playing it though. Both can be true.

Crows90214d ago

So I guess all these millions of players are hardcore gamers spending 10+ hours every day and finishing up the game quick. Doing all the content etc,...yeah right. Its a boring mess and most likely dropped it soon after starting it up.

StormSnooper215d ago

It says it dropped below skyrim two months after release.

Armaggedon215d ago

To be fair, Cyberpunk doodoos on Starfield when it comes to presentation and character builds and progression. But Starfield has its merits that have value.

StarkR3ality215d ago

Thank you! First person I've seen on here take a measured approach to Starfield other than me, it's disappointing but still can be a good time if you're into those games.

DivineHand125215d ago

I doubt it. Starfield doesn't seem like a game people will go back to like Skyrim. Skyrim is also on game pass for new comers.

GhostScholar214d ago

I agree. As much hate as this game gets I’m still playing it. Maybe like I’ve said it’s just a game made for me. I’ve had a blast with it, and I think it’s Bethesdas best narrative. It’s fallout in space which is a dream game for me. Im sorry for the people who don’t enjoy it, but I’m not gonna blast a game I have 250 hours in.

Zeref212d ago (Edited 212d ago )

The hate boner people have for this game (even before release) is actually disgusting.

These people aren't gamers.

boing1215d ago

There are simply better games to play currently.

Armaggedon215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

Better is subjective. Starfield s***s on other games in certain aspects, and vice versa.

BehindTheRows215d ago

What games does Starfield "s**t" on?

ziggyzinfirion215d ago

@BehindTheRows

The amount of loading screens.

Armaggedon215d ago

I said it s***s on other games in certain aspects. Games have “strengths and weaknesses” of course.

Armaggedon215d ago

@ziggy

All of them items and objects need to load and be instanced bruv.

BehindTheRows215d ago

What aspects? From what I played, it did nothing better than other games and certainly didn't do anything substantially better. So, my curiosity remains.

Armaggedon215d ago

Let me specify: Starfield has crafting and Elden ring has crafting. This is to highlight that games have their own perks that give them value, and its not always as simple as game A is better than game B.

VivaChe215d ago

Oh god is the phrase "it s***s on..." becoming a thing now?

Crows90215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

Critically better games.

But you've stated it very nicely. Starfields shits a lot

The game sucks...get over it

Armaggedon215d ago

Perception manipulation at its finest

Rude-ro215d ago

Yes. That is what Microsoft’s marketing does.. pays for hype, manipulates, and drives impulse purchasing.
Through their sponsored content creators and media partners.

EvertonFC215d ago

I enjoyed it, but it felt more like a good 3rd party game than a AAA 1st party game.
As far as I'm concerned MS still has to convince me/gamers they can make AAA OMFG games.

Armaggedon215d ago

It doesn’t meet industry standards, but that has its own merits. Bethesda is just doing their own thing.

CrimsonWing69215d ago

Well, it’s been out long enough to beat it and it’s sort of super boring. How long are you expecting people to play this for?

badz149215d ago

According to Todd Howard,"for many years to come"

CrimsonWing69215d ago

I’m really amazed people still give him the time of day.

anast215d ago

More people are still playing Skyrim...

Looks like you are looking to start a players vs sales debate.

purple10111h ago

Il join

Here in the uk starfield is available for £12 in the bargain bins.

This doesn’t happen with Sony or Nintendo ‘s big first party games

Oh wait it isn’t first party, they were always going to have starfield anyway, they just brought the publisher and decided not to release on PlayStation

itsmebryan3h ago

@purple101

Sony and Nintendo games never go to the bargain bin? Never Every? Not one game? That's a great achievement .

MrNinosan13h ago

14 million installs out of how many GamePass subscribers?
Starfield was supposed to be THE game of the generation, and providing it for free to over 25 million users should imo have a higher install base.

I like Starfield, even bought the game, but it's sadly nowhere near a game of the generation, not even one of the best games last year.

Hope it will make the same turn around as Cyberpunk, FFXIV and No Man Sky 👍

Armaggedon12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

The way people keep turning their attention to it says otherwise. People rely too much on statistics. It doesnt matter if people stopped playing it. People stop playing games

Stanlittle7h ago

Purple101 come on man stop lying I'm here and you are talking about trade in credit.

https://uk.webuy.com/produc...

fr0sty4h ago

Trade in credit is still on sale. That means they're not moving copies as fast as they'd hoped to, so they're starting to employ different schemes to move it faster.

Like that great poet Taylor swift said " Haters are goin' ,hate , hate..."

Obscure_Observer2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

"Starfield doomers punching air."

There´s nothing else they can do right now.

They should know better that games Bethesda Softworks has crazy legs.

So happy to know that we´ll be getting annual expansions! Bethesda is definitely better under Xbox with more money to fund their games, and more freedom to create.

Guess the game might be good in 2 years.

-Foxtrot8h ago

May aswell wait for the final completed game then

Terry_B7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Thats the plan, worked well with Cyberpunk too

Reaper22_12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

Huge numbers. Congratulations to Microsoft and Bethesda.

ChasterMies10h ago

A $3 trillion company couldn’t do this without your support.

BeHunted10h ago

Sony will wish they had reached 14 million players with Concord

badz14910h ago

@BeHunted

why use Concord? is it coming from a huge developer in the ballpark of Bethesda?

here:

https://www.psu.com/news/ma...

Spider-man 2 over 11mil units SOLD and Helldivers 2 over 12mil units SOLD. Bethesda wish they can use the word SOLD with Starfield LOL

MrNinosan10h ago

@BeHunted
Why use Concord as an example, that doesn't come with a Subscription service that is handed out for free when buying a burger?

Use Astros Playroom for a better measurement, 58+ million installs 😘

Reaper22_6h ago

Doesn't matter. It's a good accomplishment. The game is a success.

Cockney11h ago

That's a possible revenue of nearly a £billion if sales were your main target

fr0sty4h ago

but instead, it wasn't, and GP subscriptions haven't risen by $3 billion, in fact, they're stagnant, so they've lost money.

ChasterMies10h ago

These numbers are difficult to parse without context. How do we compare nunbers played on Game Pass with actual sales of games like Skyrim and Cyberpunk 2077? A good start would be achievement data. If we know how many players kept playing past the first few missions, we would have a good idea of how many players considered the game a value addition for Game Pass.

MrNinosan8h ago

Still difficult to calculate.
I mean, every single MS game are supposed to be on GamePass Ultimate.
If you combine all those possible sales and on top of that, remove all costs for third party games on the services.

Would the total revenue/profit be bigger or smaller than the total revenue from GamePass alone?

I'm most certain this is eating profit madly

ChasterMies6h ago

$204/year for Game Pass Ultimate is a lot of potential profit for Microsoft. It’s $2B/year for every 10M subscribers. That pays for a lot of game development. The problem is that Microsoft also has to pay all those 3rd parties for their games. I think the future of Game Pass is fewer 3rd party games.

BeHunted4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

@ChasterMies

Amazon India: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is about $100 for 24 Months, or $19 for 12 months (2x 6 Months Game Pass Core subscription). VPN does the trick when redeeming on Microsoft's website.

Starfield review bombed over £9 quest that takes 15 minutes to finish

Bethesda surprised fans with mod support and a free quest in Starfield, but the mission cost 700 credits to continue and fans are not happy.

purple1014d ago

somebody call animal protection services, Microsoft are trying to flog a dead horse

just_looken4d ago

Love this site

Fallout 76/fallout 4/skyrim all had bs paid mods far worse than this

But oh no bethdesda are saints they never screw over the customer its that evil Microsoft that is causing this.

Chevalier3d ago

So you're saying the $3 trillion company can't change that about the company they OWN? Sorry that's absolutely 💯 idiotic.

just_looken3d ago

@chev

I am saying bethdesda has been doing shady tactics screwing over its fan's for a decade +

I did not add elder scroll's online or the fact they like blizzard own anything you make with there mod tool's.

There was backlash but never mainstream week long just a little blimp here/there then Microsoft buys them now everything is exposed portrayed as if this big evil corporation has corrupted our poor tod boo that evil ms.

abstractel3d ago

This site is really skewed against Microsoft and they deserve a lot of it but to say that this is new and is caused by Microsoft is not realizing Bethesda's history. Anyone remember the $15 horse armor that was at the beginning of micro-transactions that pissed everyone off way, way before Microsoft was involved?

S2Killinit3d ago

Stupidest comment. So it’s not MS fault then? Is that what you are trying to tell us?

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3d ago
Kados4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

MS is not doing anything, and that is the problem. Bethesda is stubborn and lazy, and MS has a policy of not interfering with their studios for the most part, but in this case they need to just play the bad cop, and start regulating on Bethesda.

just_looken3d ago

Mat booty is in charge right now he issued refund's for redfall dlc laid off that dev team and is overseeing the starfield updates.
https://www.pcgamer.com/aft...

October of last year is when after 3years they took the rains away so 2024 is when we can say yes that was M$

But the whole paid mods are bs deal screwing over customers and overpriced dlc to content available that has been bethdesda for many many years now.

Bathyj4d ago

Dollars to minutes, that's like 4 times worse than Hellblade 2.

Cacabunga4d ago

Blame those sheep who bought these quests

DaCajun3d ago

You know what is ridiculous? The same people complaining about this probably paid $20 or more for a skin in other games.

MrDead4d ago

This is the only Bethesda RPG that I haven't finished and have very little interest in returning too. Over priced MTs aren't going to make this game fun

just_looken4d ago

I fired it up yesterday beyond the need for a bethdesda account to access the mod section the game is the same after all the patches.

But the whole customize you hub on your ship the game gives 0 clue how i had to look it up you pull up your scan tool when in a empty hab i am like scan tool? what button is that again. Five minutes later ohh ok that button

Then i saw 0 addition the same crap same issue from day one and the items but now they just break landing/flying its a gltich fuck fest. If you ever built in one of those pointless homes you can do that in your ship with all the same issues hazahh

So do not worry take it from someone that has over 200hours has not finished the campaign the only good thing the added was a map that has icons and the main mission if i can't go to sleep or have to much energy they are still so bad i passout with in the first section so now that its performance issues are fixed i can load one up much quicker cheap knock out device right there.

jwillj2k44d ago

“Bethesda surprised fans with mod support”

This is a joke right??

DarXyde4d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they start disabling mods on older titles to push people toward Starfield?

dumahim4d ago

Not really. Whenever they update the game, it will break any mods that touch something that was patched in any way. The mods can be updated to work again, but that might not happen if the mod maker has moved on.
They're not patching the game with the intent to break mods, it's just collateral damage from the update process. They're more concerned with what they're doing, not the community.

Relientk774d ago

Deservingly so. Don't support Bethesda's greedy practice

OlderGamer174d ago

So don't support MS for theyr greedy practice besause Bethesda is owned by MS. You better call a horse a horse

TheColbertinator4d ago

Bethesda was doing this before they got bought out by Microsoft. Skyrim was the first game to get Creation Club and since then opened up a can of worms. They also started the horse armor debacle back in 2006 which began this entire mess in the first place.

jznrpg4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Bethesda was doing this before the purchase but because of these practices MS wanted to buy them. MS can’t make enough money selling games but they think they can with MT’s and paid dlc, passes etc. This is what you get with your “free game rental service” aka Gamepass
