Is Apex Legends a Fortnite Killer

A new battle royale has hit the block, and that means it is time for everyone to come to attention, speculate, and spectate. This time around, EA and Respawn Entertainment headed into the free-to-play ring by dropping Apex Legends, a Titanfall universe first-person shooter on consoles and computers. Frankly, it is impressing out of the gate. Not even a week in, and people are opting in like crazy. Which is going to get people comparing it to the other big names, like Fortnite and PUBG. But, how does it compare? How are things looking?

Apex Legends hit 10 million players in just 3 days while It took Fortnite a week to do the same. It’s also consistently staying ahead of Fortnite on Twitch. It’s a great game. The ping system is a game changer.

Can’t stand Fortnite on the other hand. Soon as you pull the trigger someone’s done built the Burj Khalifa.

Fortnite paved the way for BR games being popular. When Fortnite released they were still niche game type.

While Apex Legends is a fun game in its own right, it is not a Fortnite killer.

No offense, but Apex Legends doesn't do anything unique. It is sort of a solid collection of other games. It really is an Overwatch x Black Ops 4, which is fine, but doesnt address what made Fortnite such a phenomenon: The consistent/precise gunplay, clean aesthetic, and most importantly, the BUILDING aspect.

The building aspect of Fortnite FUNDAMENTALLY changes the way the game is played. It thrust a defense mechanic into the sandbox and allows for incredible amounts of creativity in how you approach a situation. It really does add A LOT of depth to the game.

I would argue that Fortnite would be a success even if it went the classic deathmatch mode (kill, wait, respawn), and in fact, I would love to see that just to change it up a bit.

PUBG is the game that popularized the genre, between it's original early access release in March 2017 to September it sold over 10 million copies and was the most popular streamed game, shortly before Fortnite Royal came out.

Fortnite still has a much larger player base than Apex Legends does. The idea it will surpass Fortnite is very far fetched. Apex Legends is not a bad game and has a lot of good things going for it but the way it hit the market in comparison to the way Fortnite hit the market is completely different. Fortnite did it off of hear game doing all the talking for it. Apex Legends though being a good game hit the market with a huge advertisement campaign pushing it along with a quick surprise launch that gave little time for anyone to do anything but try it out.

No it didn't. Fortnite's Battle Royale mode was reactionary to PUBG. It wasn't even going to have a BR mode at one point. It was mainly going to be a tower defense co-op game.

What are you talking about? It was Brendan Greene, the actual modder for the Dayz mod on arma 2 indeed the creator of PUBG too.

If there's a father of the genre, is basically him, and not Fortnite which is actually more focused on making trend stories and events to keep relevant. Greene was a photographer which one night decided to make the mod, i have a lot of respect for him more to epic that just jumped in the band wagon with a lot of money for marketing and started to buy streamer's time and facebook pages, while his game was kid-friendly and free. That's maybe why PUBG wasn't affected by apex till today, while fortnite was, according to google trends:

No. But theyll coincide. Fortnites still being heavily updated and popular. Apex has been great so far but itll need to do the same by keeping at it with updates and content. Especially more modes like solos and quads.

I actually thing this game is gonna hurt PUBG much more than Fortnite. Fortnite has a huge demographic that consists of younger players who like the cartoony aesthetics and watch streamers like Ninja. Apex Legends appeals more to the more serious players which fall more in the PUBG, BLOPS4 demographic.

No, I don't believe it will be. I believe fortnite will always have the younger audience. In my opinion, Apex is too aggressive for the younger crowd.I do believe the older crowd that played fortnite will probably migrated to Apex.

Sadly, no. At least not in the short term.
Some people are already way too invested in Fortnite to toss it away for a newcomer.
But if EA doesn't do anything to screw it up, it can become a staple hit in the BR genre, and it might indeed surpass Fortnite in the long run, in popularity.

on a side-note, i really hate how fortnite went from a survival building horde zombie shooter, to a br game. i got it because i really wanted a good online co-op horde game, and fortnite looked to delivery. unfortunately, the br genre really took off and they completely ditched the reason why i got their game to begin with. i'm admittedly super salty over that still lol

Short answer: No

Long answer: I like to compare Fortnite to WoW (obviously respective to their own genre). When WoW was released back in 2004, it was laughed at by the Everquest crowd (at that time the most popular MMO) because WoW was up against the same month release of Everquest 2. NO WAY could it topple the MMO king's sequel!! Well, what SOE did not take into consideration was one key HUGE game design feature: accessability. EQ2 was released an unoptimized mess, requiring serious hardware to run efficiently. On the other hand, WoW was simple, game design made by brilliant Blizzard developers (personal opinion: which have all since left it seems). I could go into more detail, but WoW just grew by word of mouth at a breakneck pace, and games like (my favorite at the time) Dark Age of Camelot and Asheron's Call, and even the orginial Everquest, just helplessly watched this freak of a game moving at ludicrous speed past them in subs.

How is this relevant to Fortnite? It is... but isn't, also. It is, in the fact that PUBG was the game of 2016-2017 (until about September'ish). However, it was a technical mess... requiring serious hardware, and even taking it's sweet time expanding out to consoles. Fortnite took advantage and the rest is history. Easily accessible, but still different enough to draw in those minecraft folk also (this is the not so relevant part as Fortnite and PUBG are heavily different... but still both the same genre).

Apex Legends will be popular.... but I predict it to be popular in comparison to Fortnite as a game like Elder Scrolls Online popular in comparison to WoW. I think it will be a game that Repawn/EA will pump a lot into to keep interesting and permamently fun for those who love it, however Fortnite is just too (WoW) large to really have a true impact.

(disclaimer: i understand that i am not taking into consideration in comparisons of microtransactions/subscription s/b2p/etc ... that's too much work lol)

No. Fortnite was thought as a PUBG killer, but guess what.. PUBG is still around, even with more competition than just Fortnite. Plus, it's only a matter of time before EA jakks up APEX. Also, with season 8 less than 3 weeks away, a lot of players will likely return to Fortnite.

Fortnite stayed popular for a year+, this game just came out....wait a few months and see if apex is consistent playercount wise, if it is then it might have a chance, otherwise no. Although a lot of people might dislike fortnite for valid reasons, it seems like there are a lot of people who dislike it because it's popular and they think hating popular shit makes them special (classic shit). I hope this game does stay popular, I don't want to see respawn get closed any time soon.
