Star Wars Outlaws physical release requires internet to install

While plenty of people will be excited to see that Star Wars Outlaws finally has a release date, there is a little bit of eyebrow-raising news accompanying it. Even though it is a single-player game, you must have an internet connection to install the physical version.

Annnnnd interest lost

People need to stop supporting this shit

BrettAwesome52d ago

Name one game that doesn't need day one patches to run properly

QuantumMechanic52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

Go visit doesitplay.org and learn that 85%+ single-player games on Sony and Nintendo platforms are very much playable off their discs. They may have some minor bugs or may have some imperfections in their performance, but are generally fine to play to completion.

Jingsing52d ago

Common Xbot/PC player misconception. majority of games are playable from disc without patch data

ravens5252d ago

It's a misconception cause people like Destin likes to misinform his Xbot audience. Kinda annoying, a lot of the YouTubers do it. But ye I was interested, I'm good now. Maybe when it's 20$

I_am_Batman52d ago

The vast majority of games in my collection. You wouldn't have to ask that question if you made informed purchasing decisions. If more people did, we wouldn't have to deal with nonsense like this at all.

MetroidFREAK2152d ago

Not about a day 1 patch ya dingus... its about having online DRM for no reason

shinoff218352d ago

Star ocean 2 remake. Day one patch only adds some uncommon languages. Doesitplay.org is a friend

Markusb3351d ago

usually optional and not required, games should launch in a complete state, of course improvements can be made, but a physical game should need no internet

JackBNimble51d ago

Well you're on the internet and you needed the internet just to setup your ps5 or xbox .... doesn't most everyone rely on the internet in one way or another?
Doesn't a huge amount of games rely on day one patches to run properly? Sure you can play some games without the patch but are they glitchy broken mess?

It's completely another thing if you need the internet to play a single player game.

Pixelift51d ago

You sound so petty. "Poor me, I have to use the internet to install a game."

-Foxtrot51d ago (Edited 51d ago )

And you sound like the type of person who lets shitty companies get away with this which results in the industry getting a little bit worse each time

You allow the cancer within the industry to spread and then bitch about it years later with "How did it get to this"

So thanks for that...must be so proud to defend a multi-million dollar company

FPSRUSSIA52d ago

And the Hype just died you need internet for both Phyicial and Digital it's a pass for me.

Pixelift51d ago

You must have had a stupidly low-level of hype to let your interest in a videogame to be lessended over it's installation requirements.

Popsicle51d ago

Let’s be honest. Was anybody hype for this game to begin with? All they did was make it even less appealing.

Lightning7752d ago

I don't expect Ubisoft to respond. Even if they do it will be poor excuse for the reason.

It's clear now they trying to control your rights to your games now. Remember they said you won't own your games at all now. This physical disc that you bought your PS, Xbox or PC needs to be online to play it.

They're owning our physical purchases now.

I freakin saw this comin years ago. The disc is just a key now. Not supporting this BS.

banger8852d ago

MS also does the same thing with their exclusives: Forza Horizon 4 & 5, Starfield, Halo Infinite. All can be played offline single player, but have mandatory downloads beforehand. I expect the upcoming Fable and Avowed will pull the same shit, hope I'm wrong. I'm a physical collector, so I won't support these practices.

Zeke6852d ago

And Diablo 4, even saves are on the severside apart from offline on consoles... Bleak future for us gamers tbh.

Pixelift51d ago

I wouldn't expect them to respond to all this nonsense about not wanting the internet to be involved in game update/install.

Rebel_Scum52d ago

Since when did you never need internet for installation? All games pretty much download a chunk of data to install not including day 1 patches.

isarai52d ago

Ive played tons of games this gen just fine without needing online or updates. Hell i put 13hrs into Dragons Dogma 2 while my internet was down, not a single issue. Maybe stay away from EA/UBI/ACTI/MS AAA publishers

Rebel_Scum52d ago

The article is talking about requiring internet to install. Not requiring it to play the game once installed.

isarai52d ago

@Rebel

.....yeh, i know🤨

Kornholic52d ago

This is BS. Majority of the games on discs are installable and playable from the disc, no downloads required. Do your research instead of spreading misinformation.

GhostMirror52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

All of those games will receive post release patches that require you to sign in and authenticate with your account before you can download them. What he’s saying about all modern games downloading some amount of data is true, unless all you ever want to play is the original unpatched release.

Kornholic52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

Post-release patches are not required to play a game offline. Period.

A game that ships with the full game on the disc will always be installable from the disc and playable from start to finish. No downloads required.

Your post was completely pointless.

Rebel_Scum52d ago

Stuff research mate. I remember since the 360 days when installation was requiring internet.

ravens5252d ago

@ Rebel. For Xbox my guy.

dumahim52d ago

@Rebel_Scum

"I remember since the 360 days when installation was requiring internet."

🤔

On the console that didn't even require the HD to be attached to play the games?

isarai52d ago

People who say this mainly buy games from the EA/UBI/ACTI/MS AAA publishers. Try staying outside that AAA space and you'll find plenty of games completely fine out the box

GhostMirror52d ago

I could have told y’all that your physical games are still subject to DRM. In fact, I did so a few days ago and none of you wanted to hear it, but this has been true of every console since the PS3 & 360.

Wish it wasn’t true, but it is.

QuantumMechanic52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

Not to be a broken record in this comments section, but you are absolutely wrong. Go visit doesitplay.org and learn that 85%+ single-player games on Sony and Nintendo platforms are very much playable off their discs. They may have some minor bugs or may have some imperfections in their performance, but are generally fine to play to completion.

GhostMirror51d ago

I’m not saying they don’t, but playing those games without an internet connection and online account gives you access to unpatched versions of the games only and whether the bugs and performance issues are minor or not will vary from game to game. I’m sure that’s a helpful website for navigating that issue, though; thanks for sharing that with me and thank you for the respectful reply. If other people on this site were capable of responding without attacks, they might be surprised to find out I’m pro physical games and against DRM. I’m just stating a reality that we’re all facing; that the problem is getting worse and physical games are not immune on modern consoles. This game is an example of that.

With that said, I just bought a PS5 a few weeks ago, largely because I’d been clinging to my physical PS4 games and some movies on Blu-ray since I was forced to sell my PS4 pro, but also because I really wanted to play Stellar Blade, and I’ve pre-ordered the physical version of that game. I also own a PS Vita with physical games and still try to find and buy more of them for that system. I game on PC as well, but I prefer supporting GOG and buying games there over Steam whenever possible, because the games are DRM free and even allow you to install a backup copy and burn games to discs if you wish. I also just bought a physical copy of Unicorn Overload for PS5 and not the Steam version. I really wish consoles still worked like they did in the PS2 era, where *all* the games worked exactly as they were meant to when they all released on discs and that would never change, even though that had some downsides, such as a game needing an entirely separate re-release if the original version released with significant issues. Also, a major downside of PC gaming is that physical games aren’t a thing on there anymore, save for a few obscure Limited Run releases. That’s very sad.

Good-Smurf52d ago

My PS3 disc games and Xbox 360 works without internet let alone a DRM, so suck on that "fact" of yours.

dumahim52d ago

The hell is up with people? You didn't even have to have the HD attached to even play games on the 360, much less install games. They ran off of the disc. It wasn't until like half-way through it's life that they added the OPTION to install games to the HD for faster loading.

Minute Man 72152d ago

And it didn't load any faster

Always online and stupid tiers of the game with locked content make it not accessible as it should be. Ubisoft has turned into shite

Wretchedstain15h ago

Not just Ubisoft, just about all gaming has gone to shite.

Garethvk1d 22h ago

We can hope. Especially if the rumors of Cillian Murphy and Alaska are true.

RaidenBlack1d 20h ago

That'd be too good if true.
But Henderson also leaked that next Far Cry setting was targeting some asian island.

jznrpg18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

With their shitty practices I really don’t care what Ubisoft announces until they reverse their course

Relientk771d 23h ago

Assassin's Creed Hexe is what I wanna hear about most. Yes I wanna play as a witch with magic during the 16 century witch trials in Germany (as per rumors). Sign me up

Huey_My_D_Long1d 22h ago

Yeah, Hex sounds amazing to me as well, and I've been playing since AC 1. I'm real curious how are they gonna fit the magic into the game, maybe in similar way the dlc introduced gods and god abilities. but I love that I've heard its gonna have a horror vibe.

Garethvk1d 22h ago

Hopefully it is full of good stuff.

Garethvk1d 22h ago

I would love The Division 3.

RaidenBlack1d 20h ago

The studio just completed Avatar and busy with Outlaws and also got their F2P Heartland cancelled ... IMO, Division 3 will surely come but it'll take more time.
I'd be most thrilled if Ubisoft greenlits a sequel or at least a remake of the studio's first game i.e World in Conflict

anast1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

I would get hyped about Hexe. If the rumors are true, UBI might get a gold edition purchase out of me.

Demetrius1d 22h ago

Hopefully gameplay of ac shadows or star wars outlaws, if they finally announce the new far cry I'm definitely getting that, far cry still fun af and gorgeous games, yeah ubisoft has their faults but atleast they're not copying souls like games their titles still have identity

neutralgamer19921d 20h ago

We will definitely see gameplay for star wars and AC. Farcry let's see

OtterX1d 22h ago (Edited 1d 22h ago )

I'm going to be an outlier amongst the rest of these comments.... give us something NEW! I'm pretty burnt out on Ubisoft franchises, unless you're giving us a new Rayman game!

*Edit - imagine what they could do with a Rayman 3D game in this day and age. I say now is the time to revisit the series.

RaidenBlack1d 20h ago

Would love a AAA PoP too or a back to roots Ghost Recon (none of the open world stuff)

MeatyUrologist1d 19h ago

Hell yes! Ghost recon in the style of the originals with real consequences, permanent and all!

jznrpg18h ago

I love Rayman, played it a ton with my kids years ago. But Ubisoft puts dumb crap in their games. MTs , paid tiers , always online requirement for single player games and as they stand now I could see them doing that to Rayman

OtterX18h ago

Yea unfortunately, you're right. :'(

Garethvk1d 22h ago

Beyond Good and Evil 2: It is coming really; we promise.

OtterX1d 22h ago

Their microtransaction monetization scheme on it will lie somewhere between good and evil!

Haha JK.... it'll be completely evil. 🙃

Are we that starved for SW content that we will overlook the staples of Ubisoft practices and embellish with terms like "epic"?

At best, this is a 7/10. That is likely without platform and property bias. I do not think this will in any way be a transformative or definite star wars experience.
