Hellblade 2 Developer Ninja Theory Says Its Fans Enjoy Shorter Games

The developer of Hellblade 2 has explained why it prefers making shorter games, insisting digital distribution has opened the door “to games of all shapes and sizes.”

FPSRUSSIA57d ago

As a Digital only Game on Xbox not Worth it especially if it's Short I guess it being on Gamepass makes it up for it.

Cacabunga57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Sounds like a good looking letdown… 4 hour movie.. flop incoming I have no idea where got the impression their fans like short games. The Order was attacked for being short, despite being a very good game with solid gameplay mechanics

ravens5257d ago

This right here. That was one of the biggest complaints. Great fn game. Wish there was a part 2.

abstractel57d ago

I really enjoyed Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice and I'm sure I'll enjoy Hellblade 2 too. They're right that there is room for different kinds of games and experiences. This game looks incredibly polished and when it comes out it will be the game to beat when it comes to their achievement in graphics from a technological standpoint. If the scope of the game had been like an open world title, it would have taken 2-3x the team size and development time.

It will also be the most beautiful game made to date, but that's a bit more subjective. Really curious how it will run on Series S.

Obscure_Observer57d ago

"Sounds like a good looking letdown… 4 hour movie.. flop incoming I have no idea where got the impression their fans like short games."

Not every game has to be 30-50 hours long.

We loved the first Hellblade for what it is.

I personally rather have a shorter but unforgettable gaming experience rather than a longer, boring and totally forgettable one.

Cacabunga57d ago

“ I personally rather have a shorter but unforgettable gaming experience rather than a longer, boring and totally forgettable one.”

LOL and how about a long unforgettable experience? Isn’t it better than Hellblade 2? All these years of development for 3 or 4 hours without relatability is laughable, but you clearly don’t care..

Zeref57d ago

The first game was 8 hours too and people loved it. What changed besides it being Xbox exclusive? If that's your problem then you're not a real gamer.

The Wood57d ago

after all the slander for 'one n done's ...........how many L's can a fanbase take

Lightning7757d ago

The game isn't 4 years it's 8 hours. The previews seem to be positive. Gamesradar, Polygon, IGN, Forbes etc seem to like it so far. All of NT games are short even Heavenly Sword.

I agree it is messed up they dinged Order for being short. It was also repetitive, story was just ok. Sony never did a sequel and probably won't for a while.

I dunno but you sound angry though that's for sure.

shinoff218357d ago

Zeref

I didn't really care for the first one so why play the second.

porkChop57d ago

"The Order was attacked for being short"

The Order was 4 hours and cost full price. Hellblade 2 is roughly 8 hours long, and is only $50. There's a big difference there.

Profchaos57d ago

Retrospectively opinion on the order has actually shifted and the game has developed a fanbase for what it is instead of what it's not

Petebloodyonion57d ago

The 1st game praised by all was a digital release clocking around 7 hours long
they released in December 2108 (a year after) a disk version at 40$

RaidenBlack57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

The studio also made Heavenly sword exclusively for PS, as well?
While not perfect, it was generally well-received at the time. I considered it PS3's next-gen God of War at the time(as early as 2007! ). It was also 8 hrs long similar to Hellblade 1.
And I also consider Order 1886 a good game and wish Sony greenlit the sequel. The devs were ready for a sequel. And I still hope 1886 comes to PC.

Ironmike57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Who has said its short I searched all over to find where they say its short I seen 8 hrs for this miles morales campaign was 10 hrs u had no problem with how short spiderman 2 was

Shiro17357d ago

Spider-Man 2 short??!! Lmao easily put over 60 hours into that game for the plat.

Barlos57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

"I personally rather have a shorter but unforgettable gaming experience rather than a longer, boring and totally forgettable one."

Quote from Obscure Observer. The guy that shilled big for Starfield as the best thing since sliced bread doesn't like long, boring and forgettable games. Interesting...

TheEroica57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

You guess? Lol...

neutralgamer199257d ago

They are known for their short single-player games and had faced challenges in garnering support from gamers until their acquisition by Microsoft.

Evidence of their financial constraints is apparent in their need to borrow equipment for game development, as highlighted in behind-the-scenes footage of their recent releases. Games like Heavenly Sword, DMC, and Enslaved, all under 10 hours in length, were sold at full price despite being short . Understanding market dynamics is essential to address concerns about the viability of short game practices and maintain gamer support."

CrimsonWing6957d ago

Not this short. For as long as you’ve been “working” on the game… not this short.

thesoftware73057d ago

It's 8 hrs; how is that short for a story-driven narrative game?

Tacoboto57d ago

It's not. This is just part of the complain-about-everything echo chamber.

If this were a PS title the discourse would be 100% reversed and the ones complaining would be doing the praising.

CrimsonWing6957d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot I need change what I consider a short experience and enjoy short games because you do 🤷‍♂️

I feel for a game in development like this, for as long as it has, the experience would be a little more than 5-8 hours.

I mean, it’s not as if the developer even acknowledged that its “fans” prefer “short games.” Oh wait…

IRetrouk57d ago

We did see the reverse, when the first game launched, and the ones now excited were screaming short game/walking sim etc etc...works both ways, always has, all fanbases are the same.

thesoftware73057d ago

Lol, you don't have to do or change anything, I asked a question.

So just to be clear, you think All the Resident Evil games, original God of war, Dead space 2, Alan Wake 1, Max Payne 1 and 100s of other games are short? Because most of them clock in at 9hrs...

Again, you can feel, and consider anything you want short...but let's be honest, do you complain about some of the games I mentioned the same way you do this game?

CrimsonWing6957d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Sure, I wish they were longer. I don’t think it’s a crazy complaint to want more than 5 hours of game for $70. Just because IT IS doesn’t mean IT HAS to be. I’m saying everyone has to feel the same about it, but I’m going to voice a comment in a comment section about my thoughts and that’s my thoughts on it.

Lightning7757d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Let me get this straight, for the past decade or so we've complained about bloated never ending games where bad story telling seems to never end (LS Destiny types & Suicide Squad)

Or bloated 45 to 50 hour long fetch quest worlds (after the main game) where you collect things to fill time. There's only a a handful a publishers that's gotten it right. CD Red and Sony. Those 2 got the long but meaningful and engaging gameplay and story down. Those 2 are masters at that craft.

Plus all their games are short.

@taco yeah the usual rounds around Xbox games basically.

CrimsonWing6957d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Look you got to get over using the Xbox excuse. If Sony spent… however long making a sequel to a AA experimental game that was pretty freaking great in my book and said oh yea it’s like 5-8 hours again, I’d say the same sh*t. It’s just… well, they haven’t. So maybe you are technically right about it being an Xbox thing.

thesoftware73057d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Crimson,

Of course, you can voice your opinion, but one thing stands out.

Out of everything I said, including the game being 8 hours, you keep saying 5 hours. What game are we talking about? You also mention $70. This game is 8 hours and costs $50. Again, what are you referring to that is 5hrs and $70?

Just to be clear, the topic is Hellblade 2, an 8-hour, $50 game, and none of the other games I compared it to were 5-hour games.

CrimsonWing6957d ago

I’ll be curious to see the YouTube times on the full playthrough. My guess is it isn’t going to take 8 hours. That’s what I’m talking about. As for the price, it’s good they aren’t charging you $70, which also raises some concerns, but we’ll see at release. I think let’s come back and compare notes then.

Lightning7757d ago

"Xbox excuse" what Excuse is there in NT wanting to make this size of the game wanting to stay relatively small Having that "indy" mindset. NT under Sony wouldn't change the way the game was made or the length either. Unless Sony impedes their culture and tells them to make it a 40 hour experience.

thesoftware73057d ago

Mental gymnastics I see, you keep moving the goal post,. It's ok to be wrong sometimes.

Now we have to wait for YouTube walkthrough to determine the length, and not believe the very well respected developer right now. Now we have to worry about the game being $50 as a bad sign...a few hours ago, you were so quick and sure to spout off about $70 and 5hrs as being bad, so now 8hrs, and $50, two improvements to the "gripes" you claim to have had, and still you throw shade.

A YouTube walk through will mean nothing to the developers announced length of the game....A good example would be that Resident Evil 1, the game can be beaten in 3 hours( I know, I have done it more than once) to obtain the infinite rocket launcher...does that make it a 3 hr game? Nope.

Just stop move on, you don't have to like the game, MS or XBox, but man, get your "outrage" in line before you make a poor attempt to shade something.

Cockney56d ago

Let me just get my head around this, if resi games are 10hrs long but can be beaten in 3, how long is it going to take to beat hellblade?
They're telling us its an 8 hour game, maybe his 3hr guess is not as far fetched as you proclaim

Jingsing57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Seeing as the game sold 10 to 1 on PS4 vs Xbox it will surely be my favorite short game as I'll never even play the sequel. It's almost as bad as business move when Xbox got Rise of the Tomb Raider for a year and everyone was like nope.

Zeref57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

HellBlade 1 was exclusive to Playstation. It came out later on Xbox. Of course it wouldn't sell as well. People who were interested in it had already played it. Same thing is happening With HiFi Rush on Playstation.

Gamehard57d ago

HiFi coming out on PS5 during a time when FF Rebirth, Helldivers 2, Rise of the Ronin, Dragons Dogma 2 and Stellar Blade soon didn't do it any favors.

Lightning7757d ago

Only difference is MS owns NT now.

Yeah everyone complained hard forcing MS to opt out of timed 3rd party AAA's for awhile. Sony saw that and it was fair game to get all these 3rd parties locked up on PS with no complaints from anyone.

GamerRN57d ago

I love that there is not 1, but 2 main articles bashing this game hard before it comes out. If you don't start the negative marketing early enough it'll never stick...

Duke1957d ago

So how long is the actual game then? Article didnt say.

If we are talking like 4-5 hours, sounds like a solid fit for gamepass then imo. $50 price tag means there still should be some longevity to it that doesnt just rely on "replayability"

YourMommySpoils57d ago

Starts with a half an hour cut scene, followed by 5 minutes of actual gameplay GOTY

Duke1957d ago

Oh damn. speed reading for numbers and missed it right up front. 8 hours aint bad at all

Petebloodyonion57d ago

The article mentions an 8 hour game
"Microsoft-owned developer Ninja Theory will soon release Hellblade 2, which costs $50, is digital-only, and about eight hours long"

bionicstar57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Thanks @petebloodyonion.
8-15 hours is good.

ravens5257d ago

Not me. 15-30 is good ( straight story run through). If I decide to 100% it, it takes 50+. I appreciate the option incase id like to stay in that world. Felt I wanted more time with Spiderman 2.

ravens5257d ago

With that being said I don't mind some shorter experiences like The Order 1886. Thought that was a great game, this could be a great game as well possibly.

Hellblade 2 Is An Unrivaled Spectacle, But The Gameplay Neglection Bothers Me

Ninja Theory outdid itself in Hellblade 2 with the photorealistic visuals and the unreal audio design, but why was the gameplay neglected?

piroh7d ago

Its a perfect game for Gamepass, i think this is what MS wanted from it to be. IMO spring 2025 PS5/Switch 2 release maybe sooner

StormSnooper5d ago

I think it’s the perfect gamepass game. Pretty, but cheap to make, and shallow.

Amplitude5d ago

Cheap to make and shallow are absolutely not words that describe HellBlade 2

garos824d ago

its only perfect if the gameplay has something to say or do. turns out this game has neither. nice graphics though

Flawlessmic5d ago

I finished it and I'll start by saying the graphics are amazing!!!!! and I experienced and noticed absolutely zero bugs and ran into no issues with the game so it's highly polished.

In saying that, that's where my compliments end, I slugged my way through this game, thank god it was short.

The most on rails game I've ever played, didn't care for the story or the characters outside of the story for the first giant which I did like. For a game like this story and characters should've been everything and it just didn't hit, I didn't care at all just wanted to finish the game and experience the visuals, that's the only reason I persisted.

Puzzles were absolutely lame an amounted to either trying to find shapes or using land shifting bubbles, all of which were piss easy.

The fights are cool at first and look brutal but again very simple.

Basically no environment interaction besides lighting torches

Checking my last achievement only like 6% of players have finished the game which says a lot considering the length of it. I can't imagine a whole lot of people are playing this either.

Don't understand the higher reviews for this, outside of visuals the game isn't great if any anything it was a slog to get the 7 hrs it's took me.

Sonic18815d ago

I agree with you about the puzzles and the game length

repsahj5d ago

Many perfect reviews only scores the graphics like the very "unbiased"(lol) reviews of DF and Eurogamer. But saying the gameplay and story is a masterpiece are a bunch of liars.

StormSnooper5d ago

DF IS MS’s advertising arm. Eurogamer was purchased by IGN, which is a MS mouthpiece. so no surprises there.

Flawlessmic5d ago

Yea it's hard to disagree man, like it's really not a good game.

Since when did games get full marks along with other high scores just for visuals, it's reeiculous.

Michiel19895d ago

DF doesn't do reviews as far as I know....they do graphical analyses and ofc being the pixeljunkies that they are, they will absolutely love the graphical aspects of this game.

@storm if they're ms advertising arm then why do they still praise a game like Horizon to the heavens? doesn't pan out my man, but nice try my little pony.

Notellin5d ago

@StormSnooper

The made up Microsoft positive publicity. Even fanboys don't believe those sites are Microsoft leaning.

Good-Smurf5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Weird of them DF to do a game review when their job actually is to review the tech aspects of the game.
It came across as paid sponsored review at times.
Leave the bootlicking stuff to Eurogamer especially now that they got bought the writing is on IGN's wall.
I feel like John got that line crossed a lot I feel, he should start his own channel because the other two stooges and simps at Eurogamer and DF are holding him back a lot.
It's all so ironic coming from a guy who's all about gameplay and frame rate obsessed, many mentioned that they don't give the likes of The Order 1886 the same praise a lot of catches ifs and buts for that game.
I don't have to mention the insufferable Tom Morgan.

The combat is terrible, dodge 2 or three times, attack AND repeat.

EternalTitan5d ago

What gameplay?
Hellblade 2 barely has any gameplay.

Amplitude5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

It seems like Ninja Theory really were trying to tell an emotional story more than make a game - and that's totally fine. I really miss games like this.

Its nice to see Microsoft venturing into "story game" territory when they quite literally never do so. Other than maybe Lococycle.

Damn, remember Lococycle? https://youtu.be/4uHTEDDVFF...

rippermcrip5d ago

Order 1886 had graphics that were way ahead of its time. Also had excellent gameplay. But it was absolutely ripped to shreds in reviews based on the shortness of the game and some repetitiveness of some fights. For some reason those things don't apply to HB.

LoveSpuds5d ago

A fair comparison I must say. I will play Hellblade II when it comes to PS5 (provided it gets a physical release) as I can't help but think it's similar to the first game in respect of its shortcomings, and I still got something out of that 1st game (a platinum trophy specifically).

anast5d ago

It still applies. The games is a high 6 to low 7. Game writers need access to do their jobs so they they don't follow any kind of criteria that would potentially cut that access.

rippermcrip5d ago

Reviewers aren't applying it is the point.

anast5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

@ripper

They're not applying it, but it applies when we the consumer actually pays for the product and plays it.

Michiel19895d ago

more tinfoil hat galore than youtube comments, insecurities run wild when your plastic box doesn't have the most impressive looking game anymore, not that I'm surprised

rippermcrip5d ago

Not a single person is upset or even disagreeing that this game has the best graphics. So what are you talking about?

anast5d ago

It's naive to think access journalism doesn't exist. Calling it "tin-foil hat" doesn't make it otherwise. If you have been on this world since 89, you would have surely come to this conclusion along with the conclusion that words like "plastic box" and "insecurity" expressed in this way tells us more about you than what my comment is actually about.

Sonic18815d ago (Edited 5d ago )

And Hellblade 2 length is even shorter than the Order 1886 🤔😂

KwietStorm_BLM5d ago

The Order had excellent gameplay?

SonyStyled5d ago

It does but there’s not very much of it. There’s a couple good action sequences but the rest it bland

derek5d ago

@Ripper, I remember how that game was torn apart even before it was released. I played and agreed with much of the criticism, the end bosses were terrible the game was way too short. But the weapons, gunplay and graphics were phenomenal. Haven't played hellblade 2 but watching it, it looks like you walk on rails the take turns combat is a joke. The graphics look fantastic at times, saw her wadding through water in some underground cave with a torch, impressive. Wish NT would have focused more on bringing real combat/ movement to their impressive graphical presentation. 7 years for a 5-6 hrs game is absurd.

Good-Smurf5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Yeah and considering The Order 1886 was actually a pretty competent TPS but walks and jogs around slays a few enemies one and a time with lame ass puzzles in HB2 is much more to their liking.
Something's fishy here.

I just played the first 3 hours.....the gameplay is extremely basic. Walk a path while you hear voices, then long cutscenes, a simple battle that is almost QTE....repeat.

Steam peak-player count is super low. Lower even than the original. In regards to selling copies/subs and making a profit in some way, I'd bet everything I own on it being a complete and utter failure. But I wouldn't shut them down. They need to expand and be more ambitious and ramp up production. Hope their next game is something special.

Hellblade II Gameplay PC 4K - RTX 4090 (an amazing cinematic opening with little gameplay)

CG writes: We spend around 40 minutes playing the opening of Hellblade II on PC (Gamepass version), running max settings but with DLSS set to Quality. So, effectively playing the game at 1440p despite the render res being set to 4K. As you can see, the RTX 4090 GPU sits around the 70% usage mark using these settings which are capped at 60fps. Aside from the technical details though, we found the opening gameplay a little underwhelming. Sure, audio is top-quality sublime, and UE5 provides some fantastic visual nuances, yet the gameplay just felt sacrificed for cinematic posturing. We are going to assume the gameplay becomes more of a focus moving forwards as the opening here felt less interactive that its predecessor which also begins in/on the water.
